Tuhill, an expert miner, and labor leader, who has been a resident here since 1895, was born on Christmas day, 1855, in what is now Garrett county, Md. His boyhood was passed at Oakland, and he early began railroading. At eighteen he entered the rolling mills at Cumberland, remaining five years. He then worked three years along the Hudson river, between New York and Albany, and a winter each in Baltimore and Philadelphia. Returning to Oakland he was engaged in business until 1889, when he began mining coal for the Davis Coal Co. in Tucker County. He afterward spent two years in the Georges Creek mining regions, and came to Tunnelton in 1895. On February 26, 1883, he was married to Miss Rebecca J. Friend of Oakland, and they have had six children: Mary E., James R., Julia M., Leona H., Marguerite B., and Charles Denton. Mr. Tuhill is a Catholic and republican, and has represented the local organization of the United Mine Workers of America in both state and n! ational conventions.
