Hi again fellow FRIEND trackers, This is a looooooooooong shot, but has anyone looked into Elizabeth Hartman & Francis Albanus Friend (s/o Sophia Kemp & John Simpson Friend) as possible parents for this Rebecca Jane (Friend) Tuhill? First though, Pat T. wrote me earlier: (quote) "...Henry had at least 2 wives, an early one being shown as Lizzie Shaffer on a death cert of Charles H. Shaffer who was about 3 or 4 years younger than Rebecca..." so I'm assuming it was a type error when she later wrote: "...There is a four year gap between Rebecca and the next child in the family (Charles Haskill)..." What say you Pat T.? ===================== O.K., let's review what we have: (1) Rebecca's mother was probably Lizzie (maiden name?) SHAFFER; Henry Haskell's 1st wife.. (2) SHAFFER was probably Lizzie's marital name at the time she married Henry Haskell as she had a son Charles H. SHAFFER. (3) Charles H.SHAFFER was about 4 years younger than Rebecca. (4) Rebecca was born about 1862, thus her half-brother Charles was probably b: about 1866. (5) Lizzie must have then married husband SHAFFER between 1863 & 1866.....after Rebecca's birth and before Charles' birth. (6) Rebecca was referred to as "Miss Rebecca J.Friend" in her husband's obit, so FRIEND was probably her maiden name. (7) Assuming her mother Lizzie was married to her father, Rebecca's father's surname was probably FRIEND. (8) If Lizzie was married to a FRIEND, he (barring a divorce) died between 1862 and 1865...after Rebecca's conception but before Lizzie's marriage to 2nd husband SHAFFER and son Charles' conception. (9) "Lizzie" is often a nickname for Elizabeth, so mother Lizzie may well have been an Elizabeth. ==================== IF all of the above holds true we're looking for a FRIEND male who: (a) died between 1862 and 1865, and who (b) was married to an "Elizabeth" or "Lizzie", she being young enough to have children in the 1860s, and who (c) lived in Garrett Co. MD ==================== The only couple I have in my FRIEND files that seems to fit this "profile" right now is: Elizabeth Hartman & Francis Albanus Friend (s/o Sophia Kemp & John Simpson Friend of Garrett Co. MD) I only have them listed with one known child at this point: John Abram (or Abraham) Friend, b: abt. 1853, so there could have been other children. Francis Albanus Friend died Dec.1862 in Annapolis, MD while serving in the Third Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Infantry during the Civil War. Do we have any more on the Francis Albanus Friend family that might help include or rule them out as possibilities for this Rebecca's family? What are the vitals on wife Elizabeth Hartman? Has anyone come across the Francis Albanus Friend's household in the 1860 census? Are there other children listed for them besides John? I don't have a death date for son John or marital info...so? Rebecca, being b: 1862, wouldn't be in the 1860 census of course, but if she had other older sibs, they would be. What about the 1870 census? Where is Elizabeth (Hartman) Friend in 1870? What about the Henry Haskell family in the 1870 census? If Rebecca had older sibs they would probably have been married or out on their own by 1880, but they would have been at home in 1870. But who's home? How is Francis Albanus Friend's wife Elizabeth listed in the 1860 census...as Elizabeth or Lizzie? Do we have any other FRIEND families that fit this profile? Hmmm? Just throwing out some ideas...........
