    3. Was there a telegraph station in Deer Park at the Deer Park Hotel? Do you think the reason he is in the picture with the cooks and staff? -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, July 21, 2003 09:29:53 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Patrick GARRETT? According to GARRETT COUNTY: A HISTORY OF MARYLAND's TABLELAND, by Stephen Schlosnagle and The Garrett County Bicentennial Committee: "In 1872, when Garrett County was formed, residents of the mountaintop relied solely on word-of-mouth and the United States mail for communication with the outside world. The railroad brought the telegraph line to western Maryland, though, and forty years after Samuel Morse installed his first telegraph line along the Baltimore-Washington tracks of the B&O in 1844, the first Oakland-based telegraph message was sent from the B&O station in Oakland to Baltimore. The year was 1884; the message sender was PATRICK GARRETT. By the end of the century Western Union telegraph stations had been established at Oakland, Mountain Lake Park, Deer Park, and Altamont." page 306 Doris G. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bonnie McCroby Wuensche" <mccroby@hotmail.com> To: <MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 21, 2003 12:10 AM Subject: [MDGARRET] Patrick GARRETT? > Who can tell me about Patrick Garrett? I just saw a copy of a picture of the Cooks and staff at the Deer Park Hotel and there is a man in a suit near the far right identified at Patrick Garrett. I believe there is a copy of this photo at the Historical Society. Any clues? > > > ==== MDGARRET Mailing List ==== > Looking for your Garrett County ancestors? 3. Bonnie, I believe the telegraph stations were in train stations (towers). James Bordman Cassidy ~1839-bef. 1894 married Catherine Hoye 1849-1916 (my 1/2 grandaunt). James was a telegraph operator for the B&O railroad. Pat-T
