In my own case, I started by being interested in all of the stories I could get from family members, then when I wanted to learn more I bought books and got what I could from them. Then SK Publications made a reasonable offer to Allegany & Garrett County rootsweb members, and I got into the census data because I could work on that at home over the winter. I think of census data as a once in 10 years "snapshot" of families when I'm working with it. There's a 10 year gap (20 from 1880-1900), so it's by no means perfect, you do find errors; but sometimes that's all that's available.
