    3. Hi Pat: Funny this came up when it did, because I had this screen up for the 1900 census. This must have been, Stephen Jr. 1900 Federal census, Maryland, Garrett County, Election District 6 (Sang Run area) Enumeration District 42, Sheet 8A, SK Image 42-08A taken June 13-14. Unless shown otherwise, all members of the household and all of their parents were born in MD and were able to read & write, age at last birthday. Dwelling 134 Family 134 "Friend, Stephen W.", Head, WM age 45 born Dec., 1854, married 19 years (1881), Farmer, Owns his Farm, Free of Mortgage. "Mary M.", Wife, WF age 32, born May 1868, Married 19 years (1881) Mother of 10 Children, 9 Living. Children: Wm. D., Feb 1884. "Rebecca L.", March, 1885. "Lacy V.", Aug., 1886. "Alva H.", Aug., 1887; "Blanch", July 1889; "Lenzie (?) E.", Aug.(?), 1893. "Mathias D.", July 1895. "Pearly M. C.", July, 1899. Wonder what "Mary M."'s maiden name was. One child is missing; probably the oldest, married. Sam Pat Thompson wrote: > There is a will in the Index of Garrett County Wills for Stephen W. 3. Mr. Sam asked: "...Wonder what "Mary M."'s maiden name was...." That would be: "...Mary Martha DeWitt..." but I don't know who her folks were. He mentioned: "..One child is missing, probably the oldest, married.." This is weird Sam. The 1900 census says Mary was the mother of 10 with 9 living children that year and my files do list them with 9 children.... BUT......the only one of the nine children (listed in my files) that wasn't in the 1900 census was daughter Marie Vespie Friend. I don't list her as being born until Jun.30.1908 so if she's the missing 9th child then I MUST have her birth date wrong. I list the nine as: 1) William D. Friend b: Feb.1884 2) Rebecca L. Friend b: Mar.1885 3) Lucy V. Friend b: Aug.1886 4) Alvin Harrison Friend b: Aug.1889 5) Blanch Friend b: Jul.1891 6) Lindsey Ellis Friend b: Jun.1893 7) Mathias D. Friend b: Jul.1895 8) Barbara M. C. Friend b: Jul.1899 9) Marie Vespie Friend b: Jun.30.1908 ====== I list Marie as having died in 1987 and being buried in the Hoyes Run Cem.over in McHenry so maybe someone could check for her birthdate if they have a current list for the Cem. She was married to a McDonald and living in Pottsville, Pa. in 1959, according to her brother Alvin's obit. Stephen & Mary married Oct.24.1880 so if daughter Marie was born before William her birth year would have been between 1881 and 1883. Alvin's obit listed one of his surviving sisters as "Mrs. Mary Woods" of Morgantown. Could "Mary" be the "M" in Barbara M.C.'s name? ====== Mr. Sam said: "....Children: Wm. D., Feb 1884. "Rebecca L.", March, 1885. "Lacy V.", Aug., 1886. "Alva H.", Aug., 1887; "Blanch", July 1889; "Lenzie (?) E.", Aug.(?), 1893. "Mathias D.", July 1895. "Pearly M. C.", July, 1899...." ~ There are lot's of spelling errors on this census page (as usual). Note neighbor Soloman Sines' surname is spelled Sine and his son Asa's name is spelled Asia while son John Henry, living next door, gets his surname spelled correctly as Sines. Anyway, if you look closer at those handwritten entries for Stephen Jr.'s family you'll see: "Lacy V." is Lucy V. "Alva H." is a son, this is Alvin Harrison (according to his obit) and "Pearly" is Barby for Barbara M.C. ============= Bye for now, Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: Samuel J. The DAR application I was using for dates for Stephen Jr. has Stpehen b. Dec 24, 1849 d. Apr.11, 1937. Mary Martha DeWitt b. 1859 d. Dec. 14, 1939, married Oct. 24, 1880. Hmmmm?

    3. Hi Pat: I guess you're right. I really don't track the Friends or Dewitts. I just thought it looked like it might be pertinent information.
