Art, Have you read The Gilded Age by Twain? I often wonder if any of my "cousins" whosettled in Kentucky and Missouri were among those in Twain's mind whom he blasted so thoroughly. I hope not, but who knows? Delores

Everyone thinks librarians sit around and read all day! Why is that? No didn't read that one, but perhaps I should. I think the last Twain I read, and here I can just do this off the top of my head, since unlike in genealogy messages, I won't spawn complete fictional people who then become lodged in other's gedcoms.....er, uh, oh yes Twain...was something like - letters sent by the devil about his visits to the planet earth. This writing was so choice, I just didn't want to ruin it by reading more Twain that just might not be quite as....SASSY!!!!! Several years ago at the school I work at now we had a history teacher who asked American History students a research question, "Why did Samuel Clemens hate Sir Walter Scott?" He said it was because so many southerners read Ivanhoe and purportedly adopted chivalric, fight to the end for a cause, values, Clemens felt Ivanhoe reading in the south caused the war to go on years and tens of thousands of deaths longer than it would have otherwise. I have time to write this now as I wait 6 to 12 weeks for the 3 form 86, full civil war pension file copy requests I mailed 2 weeks ago to NARA to come back with the corresponding $111 bill for the copies they will find. Maybe I will run for President some year and start my campaign by quietly emailing all the county message boards that if elected I will try to reduce NARA fees by 2/3 and......take one more look around the basements of Foggy Bottoms for a forgotten copy of the 1890 census!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
