    3. I work with editing video every week. I have a number of systems, but my favorite one is not too high powered and works well. I added a Pinnacle Studio capture card that captures VHS. It has composite and svhs in and out and uses the computers sound card for sound in and out. It cost about $130 on sale and the software that came with it called Pinnacle Studio is easy to learn and has quiet a few tools and features that let you edit easily, add captions, transitions, voice over, music from cds. I also added a fire wire port to that computer so I can enter or play out using a minidv videocamera. I had to add RAM and a second hard drive. Newer systems have more of what is needed so less has to be added. I work with tape footage up to about 25 minutes (even new computers can be very challenged by video files from longer tapes than that) usually ending up with 5 to 15 minute edited tapes. If the computer has a cd burner you can burn avi files which can be played on computers ! that have Windows media player, Real Player, or Quicktime. My new system at home has a dv burner so I could make dvds which would play in dvd players. One thing to watch out for is that newer machines and software might not be compatible without buying more parts and equipment with all those priceless vhs tapes we have accumulated over the years. You have to be careful that what you buy says it is compatible for input and output of analog video signal or you might get something that will only work with dv played in from a dv camera. The industry is just trying to bully everyone into getting dv cameras and dvd players when gazillions of us want to use our existing tapes, cameras and players so when we are done and want to show our tapes to people they pretty much all have a vcr. I wonder if anyone has had any success saving VCR tapes to disk? I have tapes I took in the early to mid 1990's including family reunions and visits to ancestor's homesteads that I would like to put on DVD sometime down the road. I tried a "Dazzle" capture device about 3 years ago with bad results; thought maybe someone else may have had a better experience more recently.
