Pat Thompson told me about one of my Willisons who was a midwife. This was Dorcas Willison who married Israel Friend. Below is what Pat found in the book: Indian Blood by Evelyn Guard Olsen. Please DON'T ask where you can get this book. YOU CAN'T. Connie That incident, from which the catch phrase, "We killed the bar" supposedly originated must have been sometime earlier, when the McCabes were much younger. William McCabe was a blacksmith and the tooth puller of the community. His wife Elizabeth (Aunt Liz) was the midwife who had brought Blanchie, her brothers, and many cousins into the world. This expert midwifery have been taught her art by her mother, old Aunt Dorcy (Dorcas) Friend. Elizabeth was the daughter of Israel Friend of Charles, and one of the Missouri Friends, the child who was carried on the journey west when only six months old. The McCabes lived just a field length north of the Crossings. When this bear walked into their home from these rocky surroundings, Mr. McCabe - so it is related - dashed into the house and ran upstairs, calling to his wife Elizabeth to get the axe. She grabbed the axe and followed her husband up the stairs and was, in turn, followed by the bear. She turned quickly at the head of the stairs and smote the animal a powerful blow on the head. Death for the bear was swift. Billy McCabe, stunned for the moment, turned and beamed exuberantly, "We killed the bar."
