Each child born is named after a grandfather or father. I found several John Custers. I tried to list the lineage from Hoye's book in an attempt to follow the lineage a little easier. May be a good tool to compare to other resources to sort things out more clearly. Per Hoye's book: 1687 Paul Kuster I & his wife, Gertrude (Streypers) Kuster, a native of Kaldenkirchen in the Rheinland emigrated from Crefeld, Germany nad settled at Germantown, PA. Their Children: 1. Arnold 2. Hermanus (1675-1760) m. Isabella Conrad in 1706. 2.1 Paul II (b. in Montgomery County, PA abt 1710; died in Mont. Cty 11/10/1783) m. Sarrah Martha Ball (d. 12/10/1779), dau of John Ball. She was, it is said, a sister of Joseph Ball, maternal grandfather of George Washington. Their children: 2.1.1 John 2.1.2 Johnathan 2.1.3 Paul (b. abt 1736) 2.1.4 Nicholas 2.1.5 Emanuel I. (b. abt 1754; 1854) m. Mary Fadley--later however land records refer to his wife Ann. Brown's book states that Emanuel I and John came from their native County, Frederick, VA. John settled at Cresaptown, Allegany County, and Emanuel went to Somerset Co, PA, later settling in what is now Garrett Co., MD. 1795 Emanuel I came to Allegany County, MD 1798 Emanuel Custard was assessed in the Sandy Creek and Glades district 1800 Emanuel Custin was listed in Sandy Creek Hundred as head of a family of nine with five slaves. 1803 Emanuel Custer was deeded for lots 13 and 62 in Cresapsburgh (now Cresaptown) 1804 Emanuel was deeded "the frame house of which formerly belonged to Jacob Enlow." 1804-12 Emanuel "Custard" was assessed with his lots in Cresaptown, but a note added "to J. Custard--1803." Therefore it was concluded that Emanuel resided in PA, having turned over his property in MD to his son, John. 1809-1823 Emanuel Custer, Senior, purchased several lots on Mount Nebo from Thomas Thompson, Jacob Miller and wife, Ann, of Somerset County, and Jacob Yeast and wife Sarah. 2.1.5.1 Emanuel II (1779, VA; d. 6/1829, Mt. Nebo) m. Catherine Ringer. - Received part of the Mt. Nebo property and later to grandson Samuel. The old Custer homestead now belongs to a g-g grandson of Emanuel I, Floyd Durst. Had nine children: 2.1.5.1.1 Adam (1803) 2.1.5.1.2 Jacob (1805-1828) Died of sunstroke 2.1.5.1.3 Daniel (1807-1832) Crushed in sleigh accident 2.1.5.1.4 John (1808-1865) m. Nebo--not so high as its neighbor, Mt. Airy, but a place of beautiful prospects and views. 2.1.5.1.7 Peter (1815-1854) Unmarried 2.1.5.1.8 Catherine (1819-1850) Unmarried 2.1.5.1.9 Jeremiah (1824-1850) Unmarried 2.1.5.2 John (b. 1782, VA; d. 1830--see 2.1.1 & 2.1.5 above) He married a Garlitz. This John was the grandfather of General George A. Custer through John and Ann's son Emanuel (below). John was a blacksmith and hotel keeper. Children: Ann (b. 1804); Emanuel Henry (b. 12/10/1806); Mary (b 1811); George (b. 1815)--went West; James (b. 1817), settled in WV; Alexander (b. 1819), settled in WV; and Ellen (b. 1825). His second wife was Mrs. Maria (Ward) Kirkpatrick. Their children (all born in New Rumley, OH) were: George (b. 1839; d. 6/25/1876 at the battle of the Little Big Horn in the Dakota territory by the Indians under Sitting Bull); Armstrong; Nevin J., Thomas W.; and Margaret E. (Calhoun). 2.1.5.3 Jacob 2.1.5.4 Susan 2.1.5.5 Mary 2.1.5.6 Charlotte 2.1.5.7 Peter 2.1.5.8 ? 2.1.5.9 ? 2.2 John 2.3 Peter 2.4 Gertrude 2.5 Margaret 2.6 Magdalena 2.7 Rebecca. 3. Johannes (John) 4. Eliza **** Wasn't the John Custer, who died in 1830, Cresaptown, Md., recorded with a wife named Catherine Valentine? No, so far as my resources say. No reference to a Valentine in any of my material. I am mixed up on this data since I have read several versions. One record says he was married to a Garlitz daughter. If I understand this correctly it means that John Custer & __ Garlitz were the parents of Emanuel Custer, born 1806, and he ( Emanuel) was the father of Gen.George A. Custer so the Garlitz daughter (name not given) would have been Gen.George A. Custer's grandmother and thus Garret Co., Md. has a big connection with the famous man. Yes. But I also have read Brown's Misc. Writings, pg.196, that states that Elizabeth Durst, daughter of Casper Durst, married to Christian Garlitz and that one of these sisters married John Custer of Cresaptown, Md. who was the grandfather Gen.George A. Custer. The Garlitz Family (from Hoye's) Christian Garlitz I (Moved from Montgomery Cty, MD to what is now Greenville twp, Somerset County, PA. Three sons were Christian, John, and Henry. A daughter m. John Custer of Cresaptown, MD (grandparents of Gen. Geo. A. Custer. But no name of that daughter is listed. Christian Garlitz II (1777-1845) m. Elizabeth, dau of Casper Durst. In 1800 he was located in MD on what later becme the Samuel Brown farm north of the Little Crossings. Their children: Henry, Jonas, Jacob (b. 1805), Basil Tomlinson, Margaret (m. Yeast), and two other daughters. Per the Bittinger Book . . . Children of Casper Durst and first wife, Anna Elizabeth: 1. John "Lightfoot" Durst (1767-1839-40) m. Eva Margaret Glotfelty (b. 4/12/1769) 2. Henry Durst (b. abt 1769) m. Barbara Garlitz (b. abt 1762) 3. Jacob Durst (b. in 1774) m. Mary "Polly" Knoyer (b. abt 1789) 4. Susanna Durst (b. abt 1776) 5. Elizabeth "Betsy" Durst (m 1780-1863 m. Christian "Christly" Garlitz (b. abt 1777; d. in 1845). SE of Grantsville. 6. & 7. children born prior to 1785 Now Elizabeth had only one sister, Susanna, both girls were baptized on the same day in 1789 in Somerset Co., Pa. I do not have info. on Susanna and what happened to her. I have no death date for the wife of John Custer , who died 1830, Md. and some records say that Catherine Valentine died in 1877, that is 47 years after him. Did John Custer married first to a Durst or Garlitz girl and then second to a much younger Valentine girl? Did not run across anything that indicated John Custer had married twice; however Emanuel was married to someone before he married Gen Custer's mother. His second wife was Mrs. Maria (Ward) Kirkpatrick. Jacob Brown visited with Emanuel Custer, the father of Gen.Custer, after the terrible deaths in Emanuel's family so I think Brown would have had first hand information on this family. Now the Emanuel Custer (brother to John) who was born in 1779, died 1829 Allegany Co., Md. and had several children married to Durst children. Had nine children: 2.1.5.1.4 John (1808-1865) m. Mary Durst (3/24/1817-1/23/1862)--confirmed in Ross Durst book along with their children: ... Did not see any other marriages to Dursts in this information. That is my interest in the Custer family, they are not a direct line for me but I am curious about the different wives given to John Custer, mentioned above. I do not have a Custer Book that has been previously mentioned.
