Sam, In regard to your question about "why would I want to contact this person if I didn't want him to know who I was is beyond me.". I have an answer for you. You may want to have the person know who you are, BUT do not want to be on their personal email list so that you start getting jokes etc. from them. It may be you only want to have contact with them regarding the submitted information. Also, much to my dismay, I found that "Spammers" take email addys from places like forums etc. and then you are on the Spammers list, and boy will you be sorry. You can always contact the person, add your name and email addy to the message if you want them to have it, and not worry about others getting the email address and name. This, I have found, works very well. Though this may not alter your opinion of Ancestry. com, I hope it helps you in understanding the contact practice. Someone had posted a message I think regarding information they'd found in a family tree submitted to Ancestry by a "Roberds" or something similar. I think I stumbled on the same submission last evening. What I found was information I know to be erroneous. There was a box to contact the submitter. I clicked on the box and a prewritten email came up that said in replying to the submitter, I could be assured that my identity would not be revealed.
