I've been reading these posts about the LDS curch and trips to Salt Lake City, and I have two cousins that are Mormons and live in that area. A bit of a warning here: I hope you all realize that they do not verify any of the info in their database. I've checked some of the data that they have on my ancestors, and they are dead wrong on portions of it. Keep in mind that they accept info from just about anyone, knowledgeable family source or not, so if "Great-Uncle Bill" was a horse thief and the older family members tried to cover it up, Uncle Bill might not be in the database. Or if a female family member gave birth to a child out of wedlock, the older submitters many times changed birth or marriage dates to make it seem legitimate before submitting to the LDS database. My cousins quite often send messages to me asking if I have any info on certain members of the family. Their religious zeal to get every possible person into their database often times takes precedent over accuracy. The closest family history centers to Garrett County are in at the LDS chapel in Allegany County on Long Drive in LaVale. There is also one in Morgantown. I will gladly provide the names and phone numbers of the family history consultants. Please contact me off-list at [email protected] I lived in Utah for ten years and researched both at the Family History Library at Brigham Young University and the collection in Salt Lake. > __________________________________________________ >Do You Yahoo!? >Tired of spam? My personal experience has been similar in that research in many cases was done without verification in any form. I have been presented with "facts" from research located through the LDS resources (website, etc...) that were clearly wrong based on my own research and that of others such as yourselves who have documents to back up the work. I know that a person can access many volumes of researchable documents through the LDS libraries and that research is only as good as the researcher. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to everyone, I enjoy the "conversations" on this site and thank everyone who has aided me in my search for the Johnstons, Hilemans and Upholds and associated lines in the past few years.
