    3. Leroy "Lee" Wilt (1/23/1918-3/28/1993) was son of Truman Wilt (6/15/1876-11/26/1943) and Luvena (Bittinger) (5/20/1881-4/10/1958). Truman and Luvena farmed on Maynardier Ridge Road near Bittinger, Garrett County, Maryland. (This land remains in the family to this day.) They had 15 children. Truman Wilt was son of George T. Wilt (late 1820s-8/11/1895) and Mary (Hoover) (early 1830s-about 1900). George T. Wilt served in the Union army. He owned land in the vicinity of the now defunct town of Frankville in what is now Garrett County, Maryland. (Does anyone know precisely where Frankville was?). George T. and Mary had 12 children. George T. Wilt was son of John Wilt (7/23/1807-1/22/1872) and Catherine (about 1802-sometime between 1850-1867). John was born in Virginia. While John's father, Peter Wilt, appears to have moved from Virginia to western Maryland during the period 1817 to 1824, only to return to Truro Parish, Virginia, by 1825, we do not know whether John accompanied his father on his Maryland sojourn. John's name first appeared in assessment records of Truro Parish in Fairfax County, Virginia, on 5/4/1826. He owned one head of livestock. His name appeared again in the assessment on 5/23/1827 for one head of livestock. John married Catherine, whose maiden name is variously reported as Mayhue or Brown. Their eldest child was George T., born in the late 1820s. The John Wilt household was recorded in Fairfax County in the 1830 census. John's name was listed in the Truro Parish tax assessment of 1830 and 1831. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the John Wilt household moved to western Maryland about 1832, as his name did not appear in the Fairfax County tax assessment of that year, and their third child Theophilus, who was born in 1832, and all their younger children were said to be natives of Maryland. In 1840, John and his young family were living in the Savage River area of what is now Garrett County, Maryland. His close neighbors included his brother Theophilus, his uncle Michael Wilt, and Elisha Jinkins. The 1850 census showed John and Catherine living in what is now southern Garrett County. On 6/5/1857, John bought 50-acre Military Lot Number 1936. This property is located in the Spring Lick-Maple Lick Run area. On 6/20/1863, John bought a second lot, Number 1972, about a half-mile distant from his first lot. John held these lots the rest of his life. John and Catherine had nine children. By 8/29/1867, John was a widower. On that date, he married Sarah Jones, a single woman, at Bloomington, Maryland. Sarah, 23 years younger than her husband, was a native of Maryland. John and Sarah had two children. They were listed in the 1870 census. John died 1/22/1872. At the time of the 1880 census, his widow Sarah and their two children remained in southern Garrett County. John Wilt was son of Peter Wilt. I have a website dedicated to Peter Wilt.
