Death of Charles Casteel Charles Casteel, living near Altamont, MD, and who was employed as sawyer on A. C. Browning's steam saw mill on Roaring Creek, northwest of David Morgan's house, met with a fatal accident on Tuesday about 3 o'clock p.m. The unfortunate man was ?gumming? the saw with an emery wheel which was running at a terrific rate of speed. Just as Mr. Casteel was about to tell the engineer to shut off the steam, the wheel burst into a thousand pieces. Casteel was struck in the right chest, and his ribs were broken loose from the breast bone, and crushed into small pieces. Dr. W. S. Martin, of Kingwood, was sent for, but found him past all surgery and could nothing save ease the poor man's terrible suffering. He was unconscious for 10 or 15 minutes, after which he came to and talked, and suffered much till during the night, when he went into a stupor, and yesterday morning when Doctor Martin left him, his breathing was infrequent and irregular- in fact, he was dying. Casteel was about 35 or 40 years of age, and married. His wife who lives at Altamont was telegraphed for. They had three children, the eldest of whom is not over seven years of age. About six years ago, Mr. Casteel, lost his left hand by having it accidently sawed off. But Mr. Browning says he is the best sawyer he ever knew, and worth more than any other similar hand he ever had. LATER- Casteel died last night about 7 o'clock and was buried at Albrightsville this morning at 10:30 -Kingwood Journal, April 12 Deceased was well known in this county. He leaves an aged mother, a wife and three small children. His wife is a sister of Mrs. Joseph Cogley, of Oakland. Hi Pat: I have a Charles Casteel born about 1848 according to the 1850 census. Son of Nathaniel and Ellen (Conrad) Casteel. They were counted in the Selbysport District that year. He would be about the right age (40 in 1888.
