Cumberland News Paper, April, 10, 1920. LIVED FOUR-SCORE YEARS IN CUMBERLAND: Death Claims Wm. T. Deetz, Union Veteran One of Oldest Native-born Residents: William T. Deetz died this morning at 3:00 O' Clock at his home, 215 Baltimore Ave., age 81 years and seven months. Mr. Deetz was a pioneer shoemaker of Cumberland, where he spent his whole life. He was born at the old family home on North Mechanic St. His family were pioneers. His mother a member of the well known Wickard family. Mr. Deetz best known for his activities among the veterans of the Civil War. He served Three years in Company E. Second Maryland Regiment Union Army of the Republic, which are in charge of his funeral Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from his home. The pallbearers will be selected from his comrades. Burial will be in the Greemount Cemetery with the honors of the Grand Army of the Republic. The religious service will be conducted by the Rev. Martin L. Enders, pastor of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Although in failing health for several years, Mr. Deetz was seriously ill but a month and confined to his bed but a week. He was conscious in all his last moments. He passed away as if asleep. For many years, Mr. Deetz was in the employ of the late Samuel J. Edwards, who conducted a shoe store on Baltimore St.. When Mr. Edwards closed out, Mr Deetz went with Benjamin C. Poole with whom he stayed until Mr. Poole discontinued business. For the past six years Mr. Deetz was inactive on account of infirmities. Mr. Deetz is survived by his wife, who was Miss Mary Zimmerla; two sons, William H. and Frank L. Deetz, this city, and 4 daughters, Mrs. Ralph T. Hoy, this city; Mrs. Victory Gloss, Tarentum, PA.; Mrs. Harry O"Neal, Baltimore Pike and Mrs. Richard Thomas, New Orleans. Mr. and Mrs. Deetz celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage in December. Mr. Deetz is survived by one sister, Mrs. Annie Fenno, Erie, PA.
