I wanted to thank MDGarrett for keeping the list Archive. My husband is a relative of Eleanor Shrout/Tasker and Queen Victoria Tasker. The connections were difficult to follow but thanks to the MDGarrett Archives I was able sort through the family line. I do appreciate those of you who maintain the list and help those of us far away from Garrett County to navigate the family lines. Lyn Wilson

What kind of document and how much information can be gotten from ordering copies of the AGBI (American Genealogical-Biographical Index) from the Godfrey Memorial Library? I've looked at the Index on Ancestry and have found names of possible ancestors, but I'm wondering what the a AGBI really is. Priscilla

The following new obituaries have been posted on OurBrickWalls.com I will be keeping a list of all the new obits on the "Whassup" page along with their posted date. Dick Crow suggested this would make it easier than going through all the others to find the new ones. Their names are Magdalena “Lena“, born abt. 1851, in Grantsville, Allegany Co (now Garrett Co) MD, and her sister Julianne “Julia“, born abt. 1856, also in Grantsville. Prior to Grantsville, the family lived in Selbysport, later Accident, the Cove area. The girls parents are Johann Andreas "Andrew" and Maria Katharina "Mary". The family surname is variations on the following, depending on what document or records are being looked at: (Deetle, Deichel(le), Deichtel, Deightle, Deicle, Deitel(le), Deitchel, Dieddle, Diegel, Dieghtle, Dietel(le), Diettle, Dietzel) There has also been some records where the family has been intermingled with the surname variations: (Deahl, Deal, Deale, Deihl, Dichl, Diehl) If you have any variation of the above surname that may fit, I would be grateful for any help. Ellis, I found two Magdalena in the Diehl information I have; i.e., Magdalena DIEHL (b. 1590) and Magdalena STRENGLER (b. 1784)--So it appears that given name was in the DIEHL family, but there is about a 66-year gap to the 1850 census. Andrew DIHEL was 73 in the 1880 census--dau Catharine was 26--she may have been the last child and would have been born in 1854. The older censuses would only have number of children in each age group--unfortunately no names. Maybe the Agricultural Census would lend more information. I am not familiar with it however. Just ran out of information. Sorry. Martin DEAL/DIEHL's wife was Juliana Wiess (translates to White)--she was my 2nd g-grandmother, Anna Katharina SCHMIDT HETRICK's aunt. I also found some MUELLERs and MILLERs in the DIEHL line. Are you connected to these Garrett County families. In a message dated 5/25/2009 3:46:31 A.M. Finding those who married into each and merged the various spellings. As we all have experienced this is common place, for those of us researching Allegany / Garrett and Somerset, but, not limited to those areas. We have no idea who either, Magdalena, born abt. 1851 or Julianne, born abt. 1856 married. We were hopeful someone may have a unconnected lady married to a family member who might fit, that we could look-into, if she could be the missing great-grandaunt. Thank you. Ellis . . . I found DIHEL Andrew (73) Farmer and wife Mary (60) both from Bavaria along with dau Catharine (26) born in MD--1880 Garrett County Census. My Hetricks and the Diehls are inter-related way back. First time I've seen Diehl spelled this way but there are a lot of them listed with this spelling on Ancestry.com. I could not find Julianna or Magdalena but Catharine Dihel, b. about 1854 does show up on each search. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Would like information on Charles W. and Mary K. Clark Custer. These are my grandparents. Have not had contact with the families until recently. Parents divorced when I was young. Father's name was Ralph E. Custer B. 1914 in Barton. The only one I have been in contact with is Charles Custer who is now passed away. Seems like there is no info out there. I was told Charles and Mary lived in Pa. Do not know if this is so or not. My brother had DNA done and we come from Paulus Custer. Any information would help. Thank you. Delores Custer Garrett
New obits for Crowe, Miller, Winebrenner, Rafferty, Wempe, Coleman, Getson and I can't remember who else, along with a couple of marriage articles have been posted on OurBrickWalls.com. Hi Patty, Thanks so much for posting Laura C. Hetrick's obit. I've had a difficult time trying to find out what happened to the family of this brother to my great-grandfather Conrad. This is Johannes (John) Caspar Hetrick's wife Laura Kimmet. It appears that John Calvin Hetrick (husband of Samanta Wright) was the #10 child--#11 may have been "Gus" Hetrick named after Laura's eldest brother Augustus Kimmit. Per the 1900 Accident, MD census . . . Laura and John were married 36 years--both 19 when they married. Both of Laura's parents were from Bavaria (Phillip and Catharine Kimmet). John (b. 6/10/1840) was approximately 55 when he died. Apparently, there were 13 children--only 11 living at the time of this census. Nothing more is known about the two deceased children. In a message dated 4/19/2009 8:56:12 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, Patty125@comcast.net writes: Mrs. Laura C. Hetrick died at her home at Cove, MD, Sunday of dropsy, after a long illness. She was 72 years of age. Eleven children are bereaved; Mrs. Dan Shultz, of Meyersdale, PA; Mrs. Charles Dick, of Ocean, MD; Mrs. Urias Brown, Elk Lick; Mrs. Jno. Wasmuth, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Francis Shunk and Mrs. Matthew Jones, Greenville township, Somerset county, PA; Mrs. George Schaffer, Somerset; Mrs. W. F. East, Friendsville; A. F. Hetrick, Grantsville, and John C. and Miss Anna at home. She was a member of the Lutheran church at Cove at which the funeral was held.
