Grantsville, Feb. 19-George Hoover, 80, a retired merchant of Jennings, died Saturday night after an illness of several months. One of ten children, he was a son of the late Carlyle and Rosanna Durst Hoover. Sixty years ago he married Miss Ellen Wiley, who died in 1889. Two children were born of this marriage: Lloyd Hoover, who was killed on the Jennings Railroad in 1912, and a daughter, Miss Ada Hoover, who died two years ago. In 1890, he married Miss Elizabeth Bowers, who survives, along with four children: Heiskell Hoover, of Melcroft, Pa.; Russell Hoover and Mrs. Roy Wilburn, of Grantsville; and Mrs. William E. Swanger, of Jennings. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman Hoover, and one sister, Miss Anna Hoover, both of Jennings. Had he lived Mr. and Mrs. Hoover would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary next September. He was a member of the Jennings Methodist Church. Swauger, Jennings, Md., died at 6:30 a.m., Sunday, April 25, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ward Livengood, Friendsville, Md., six weeks after returning from the Memorial Hospital, where she spent three weeks for treatment. She had been ill for the past year. Mrs. Swauger was the daughter of Mrs. Eliza Ellen (Bowers) Hoover and the late George Hoover of Grantsville, and was born April 17, 1891, at Jennings, Md. She married William E. Swauger, Sept. 3, 1908, who survives with the following children: Miss Velora V. She was a life long resident of this city and a member of Centre Street Methodist Episcopal Church. Besides her husband, se is survived by four children; Miss Grace G. Steiner, Cincinnati, Ohio; Johns S. Steiner, of Buffalo, N.Y..; Mrs. Esther Lechillter and Allen M. Steiner, this city. Funeral services will be held at 1:15 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the home with Rev. H.E. Thompson, pastor of Centre Street Methodist Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The Cumberland Evening Times, 1 June 1970: Westernport - V. Marshall Dayton, 79, formerly of 213 Vine Street, died this morning in Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser. Prior to entering the hospital, he was a patient in the Deakins Nursing Home, Aurora, W. Va. A native of Westernport, he was a son of the late Henry C. and Emma (Dawson) Dayton. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Dayton was a retired employee of the Like Mill of Westvaco. Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews. The body is at the Boal Funeral Home where the family will receive friends tomorrow and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Philos Cemetery.

He was a member of Calvary United Brethren Chruch. Davis Lodge No. 51, A.F. and A.M., and the Junior Order United American Mechanics. he was twice married, first to Miss Carrie May Fletcher. he is survived by his second wife, the former Mrs. Bertie (Hott) Feaster, one son by the first marriage, Everett Dayton Narraows, Va., and one son by the second, Charles M. Dayton, Jr., at home.

He was a retired employee of the Celanese Corporation. Surviving are his widow, Mary C. (Emmart) Dawson, three sons, John and Robert Dawson, both of Rawlings and James Dawson, Cumberland; two daughters, Catherine Armstrong and Mrs. Mary Lou Kendall, Pittsburgh; four brothers, Hayden and Herbert Dawson, both of Rawlings, Paul Dawson, Petersburg, W.Va., and Earl Dawson, Hyndman; a sister Mrs. Kate Lease, Cumberland, 14 grandchildren and a great grandchild. The body is as the Stein Funeral home, where services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. by Rev. Carl L. Whitten. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

Deetz, who died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry O'Neal, Baltimore Turnpike, were conducted yesterday a the home of Mrs. Ralph T. Hoy, another daughter, 3 Decatur street. The Rev. Harry Edward Evaul, pastor, Centre Street Methodist Episcopal Church read the office of the dead. Burial was in Greenmount Cemetery. Many relatives and friends from this city and outlying sections were present at the Hoy home for the final rites. Among those from a distance in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. John W. Gloss, Mrs. W.T. Sisco, harry palmer and Victor A. Gloss, a son-in-law of Mrs. Deetz, all of McKeesport, Pa.; and Harry G. Fawcett, also a son-in-law, Gary, Indiana. The pallbearers were Charles A. Frost, Lawrence Smith, Howard Perrin, Sherman B. Myers, Bruce Wilson and Frank Lee Carl.
Cumberland News Paper, April, 10, 1920. LIVED FOUR-SCORE YEARS IN CUMBERLAND: Death Claims Wm. T. Deetz, Union Veteran One of Oldest Native-born Residents: William T. Deetz died this morning at 3:00 O' Clock at his home, 215 Baltimore Ave., age 81 years and seven months. Mr. Deetz was a pioneer shoemaker of Cumberland, where he spent his whole life. He was born at the old family home on North Mechanic St. His family were pioneers. His mother a member of the well known Wickard family. Mr. Deetz best known for his activities among the veterans of the Civil War. He served Three years in Company E. Second Maryland Regiment Union Army of the Republic, which are in charge of his funeral Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from his home. The pallbearers will be selected from his comrades. Burial will be in the Greemount Cemetery with the honors of the Grand Army of the Republic. The religious service will be conducted by the Rev. Martin L. Enders, pastor of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Although in failing health for several years, Mr. Deetz was seriously ill but a month and confined to his bed but a week. He was conscious in all his last moments. He passed away as if asleep. For many years, Mr. Deetz was in the employ of the late Samuel J. Edwards, who conducted a shoe store on Baltimore St.. When Mr. Edwards closed out, Mr Deetz went with Benjamin C. Poole with whom he stayed until Mr. Poole discontinued business. For the past six years Mr. Deetz was inactive on account of infirmities. Mr. Deetz is survived by his wife, who was Miss Mary Zimmerla; two sons, William H. and Frank L. Deetz, this city, and 4 daughters, Mrs. Ralph T. Hoy, this city; Mrs. Victory Gloss, Tarentum, PA.; Mrs. Harry O"Neal, Baltimore Pike and Mrs. Richard Thomas, New Orleans. Mr. and Mrs. Deetz celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage in December. Mr. Deetz is survived by one sister, Mrs. Annie Fenno, Erie, PA.
Cumberland Evening Times, Thursday, April 30, 1908. Mrs. Kate A. Deetz, wife of J. Wesley Deetz of the Cumberland Furniture Co., died at 7:30 O'clock. Deceased had been a sufferer for several years, and this with her advancing age brought on gradual dissolution. Mrs Deetz was 76 years of age and born in Washington County, her maiden name being Miss Catron, her father being Robert Catron, who resided in this city and engaged in business prior to the war between the states. In her early childhood she united herself with the Methodist Episcopal Church and was a regular attendant to the Centre Street church of that denomination for over fifty years and in every respect a kind and charitable woman. She is survived by her husband and three sons, Charles C., Robert R., William R., and one daughter, Miss Annie Deetz, all living in this city. The funeral will occur Saturday afternoon at 3 O'clock with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The body is at the Stein Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 - 4 and 7-9 p.m. Services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in St Paul's lutheran Church by Rev. Richard manning. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Paul's Lutheran Church memorial fund. The body will be taken to the church at noon tomorrow.

Frederick Post, Frederick, Maryland, Nov 18. 1925: Josephus Reckner, who served in the Union Army in the Civil War died at Soldiers Home, Dayton, Ohio, aged one hundred and six days. He was born at the old Reckner home on Dan's Mountain in Allegany County. He enlisted in Company B, Third Maryland Infantry in December 1861. At Fair Oaks he was shot through the leg, and after spending some time in the hospital, was furloughed. He rejoined his regiment at Frederick when he recovered. He was captured at Charles Town, WVA shortly before the war closed. He was later released and was honorably discharged in Baltimore.
