Walt, Since you are the expert on this, I wanted to ask if you could explain exactly where the military lots are that the Warnick family purchased from Nicholas Holsbury about 1807. Nicholas Holsbury is my ancestor. We made a quick trip through that area several weeks ago while returning from a business trip in North Carolina. We drove to Barton and then out toward the Garrett County Line. Were we close? That sure is beautiful country and the folks in Frostburg (where we stayed overnight) were the most friendly of any place we have been on our ancestry hunt. We ate breakfast at McDonalds in Frostburg and certainly enjoyed the "senior boys" who were having coffee there that morning. It was interesting to me to know that the locals there pronunce Creek as "Crick." My mother, a Holtsberry, always referred to the creek running through our pasture in Michigan as the "crick." I guess old customs follow us for year and years. Karen
Walt, ?Do you know anything about the old Warnick house that stands at "The Elbow". It? looks like there was an older part built of stone at the bottom with a full sized entrance door at street level. Above it looks like there was added on an 1870/80s (pretty fancy) style house above with a porch across the front above the lower entrance. It is built into the hill. This?must be?the place that Silas Warnick died from his death cert. Folks at the Allegany Hist Soc told me that the Elbow was where the polling place used to be too. There is a Warnick Cemetery on the hill behind the house but I couldn't find it. The house is standing but just barely. Leroy "Lee" Wilt (1/23/1918-3/28/1993) was son of Truman Wilt (6/15/1876-11/26/1943) and Luvena (Bittinger) (5/20/1881-4/10/1958). Truman and Luvena farmed on Maynardier Ridge Road near Bittinger, Garrett County, Maryland. (This land remains in the family to this day.) They had 15 children. Truman Wilt was son of George T. Wilt (late 1820s-8/11/1895) and Mary (Hoover) (early 1830s-about 1900). George T. Wilt served in the Union army. He owned land in the vicinity of the now defunct town of Frankville in what is now Garrett County, Maryland. (Does anyone know precisely where Frankville was?). George T. and Mary had 12 children. George T. Wilt was son of John Wilt (7/23/1807-1/22/1872) and Catherine (about 1802-sometime between 1850-1867). John was born in Virginia. While John's father, Peter Wilt, appears to have moved from Virginia to western Maryland during the period 1817 to 1824, only to return to Truro Parish, Virginia, by 1825, we do not know whether John accompanied his father on his Maryland sojourn. John's name first appeared in assessment records of Truro Parish in Fairfax County, Virginia, on 5/4/1826. He owned one head of livestock. His name appeared again in the assessment on 5/23/1827 for one head of livestock. John married Catherine, whose maiden name is variously reported as Mayhue or Brown. Their eldest child was George T., born in the late 1820s. The John Wilt household was recorded in Fairfax County in the 1830 census. John's name was listed in the Truro Parish tax assessment of 1830 and 1831. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the John Wilt household moved to western Maryland about 1832, as his name did not appear in the Fairfax County tax assessment of that year, and their third child Theophilus, who was born in 1832, and all their younger children were said to be natives of Maryland. In 1840, John and his young family were living in the Savage River area of what is now Garrett County, Maryland. His close neighbors included his brother Theophilus, his uncle Michael Wilt, and Elisha Jinkins. The 1850 census showed John and Catherine living in what is now southern Garrett County. On 6/5/1857, John bought 50-acre Military Lot Number 1936. This property is located in the Spring Lick-Maple Lick Run area. On 6/20/1863, John bought a second lot, Number 1972, about a half-mile distant from his first lot. John held these lots the rest of his life. John and Catherine had nine children. By 8/29/1867, John was a widower. On that date, he married Sarah Jones, a single woman, at Bloomington, Maryland. Sarah, 23 years younger than her husband, was a native of Maryland. John and Sarah had two children. They were listed in the 1870 census. John died 1/22/1872. At the time of the 1880 census, his widow Sarah and their two children remained in southern Garrett County. John Wilt was son of Peter Wilt. I have a website dedicated to Peter Wilt. Walt, You have such interesting stories. Thanks, Lois Hetrick Stewart
Today's issue (Sept 1, 2009) of the Cumberland Times-News carries a long article about brushes with the law involving my G-uncle Leroy Wilt in 1942. The article is entitled "No Jail Could Hold Garrett County Man." It was written by Times-News columnist James Rada, Jr. The article goes into some detail about Leroy's arrest and escape from Allegany County authorities in January 1942, and his rearrest and escape from a Garrett County prison the next month. Over 60 years later, Leroy's scrapes with the law and his irrepressible personality remain today topics of tradition in the vicinity of Jennings and Bittinger. Today's article does fill in some details forgotten in tradition. While Rada's article is interesting and gives a glimpse of a bygone era, Rada does not offer a rationale why the article should appear in today's newspaper. I find it a curious, but not unwelcome, surprise, as it causes me to reflect back on my G-uncle Leroy. In both appearance and demeanor, Leroy bore a striking resemblance to the always cheerful, devil-may-care characters portrayed by movie actor Errol Flynn. Years after the events reported by Rada, Leroy married a stunningly beautiful local girl 17 years his junior. By all apparances and accounts, theirs was a happy union. They stayed in close contact with Leroy's numerous siblings and their families. They wouldn't dream of missing the Bittinger Picnic. Three children blessed the marriage, which lasted over 40 years until Leroy passed away 3/28/1993. His widow and children survive. Walt Warnick

To the question about the marker.? No it is not placed on the grave site. Because of the difference of opinions as the the year, etc. it was postponed but at the last Durst Reunion, first Sat. of August, in Salisbury, Som.Co., Pa. the group decided to fill out the, papers and have a marker placed on the site. I am in charge of the project and will be contacting the Newman Funeral Home in Garrett Co./Som.Co. to have it delivered there. It is my understanding that it needs to be delivered to a business as opposed to a personal address.? Last year I spoke to Mr. Newman and was was willing to do that for us. So now I need to contact him to sign the papers. Will be doing that this month.? Thanks for the interest, we are open to any suggestions and opinions.? I've tried to find something doing an Internet search but had no success. I sure would like to get this going again. We had hoped that by pooling our family information and sources we could overcome our brickwalls. Maria E.
