Thanks Pat for Edward Lee obit, Charles Below more on his father, mother, brothers and sisters. Descendants of George Statton Lee, Sr. Generation No. 1 1. George Statton1 Lee, Sr. was born August 04, 1826 in MD, and died March 04, 1896. He married Julia Anne Harvey, daughter of Elisha Harvey and Hester Wilson. She was born June 15, 1834, and died March 29, 1891. Notes for George Statton Lee, Sr.: The George S. and Julia Anne Lee Family, Their Ancestors and Descendants. On pages 130 and 181 in the Harvey Genealogy there is somewhat sketchy information about. this particular family. After the publication of the Harvey Genealogy in 1975, the writer (Marshall Brown) was contacted by Marvin Warnick who is a great grandson of George S. and Julia Anne Harvey Lee. Marvin and his son Dr. Walter Lee Warnick had done a considerable amount of research on this particular family. They turned over to me, (Marshall Brown), the information they had obtained and it is included in the following pages. GEORGE S. LEE,was born Aug., 4, 1826, and died March 4, 1896. He married Julia Anne Harvey, daughter of Elisha and Hester Ann Wilson Harvey. She was born June 15, 1834 and died March 29, 1891. The immediate cause of Mr. Lee's death was measles. They lived in the North Glade community in Garrett County. Mr. Lee had been a member of the Methodist Church for 40 years. Information from the Hall of Records, Annapolis. Md., shows that George S. Lee on April 27, 1885, bought for $650. 100 acres at North Glade from Joseph R. Anderson, of Richmond. Va. In1889, he purchased 50 acres from John Henry Beckman for $250. In 1893, he added 100 acres by purchase for $500, from William T. and Nellie E. Carson. Evidently, George S. Lee did not become a land owner in North Glade until he was nearly 59 years old. Following his death, proceeds from the sale of his personal property was administered by his son, Elisha Frank Lee. Some of his assets included: 1-horse $10; 1- cow - $20; 1- calf - $3. 23- sheep- $46. After expenses of $60.83 (including funeral expenses of $6.00) , the proceeds of the sale of the personal property of George S..Lee were distributed as follows: Elijah H. Lee, son 1/8 share $11.43 Edward R. Lee, son 1/8 share $11.43 Elisha F. Lee, son 1/8 share $11.43 Amos, E. Lee, son 1/8 share $11.43 Joseph H. Lee, son 1/8 share $11.83 Jane A. Moon, daughter 1/8 share $11.43 Eliza C. Lee, daughter 1/8 share $11.43 Lula G. Kimmell, granddaughter 1/2 of 1/8 share $5.72 Bessie C. Kimmell, granddaughter 1/2 of 1/8 share $5.72 The parents of George S. Lee have not been positively identified. Possible parents of George S. Lee listed in the 1850 Federal census include Frederick Lee and Dudley Lee. I suspect that Dudley Lee was the father of George S. Lee. In either case, however, George S. Lee would be the grandson of another Dudley Lee who was a Revolutionary War veteran. Footnotes 1. Information from the tombstone in the Lee Cemetery in North Glade. 2. KILLED BY LIGHTNING Edward Lee, 38 years old, a farmer, received a fatal shock Friday last. He was standing under a tree. When the bolt descended and killed him instantly a dog, which had also taken refuge under the tree, was killed with his master. The present summer has been marked by severe electrical storms in all sections of the county and as a result many deaths have occurred to to persons being struck by lightning. The only fatality in Garrett County from this cause, however, so far as known, took place last Friday evening on a farm near Beckman, a few miles north of Swanton, seventeen miles east of Oakland, on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the victim being Edward Lee, 38 years old, a farmer and a bachelor, who was engaged in making hay in his field when a storm came up suddenly. To protect himself from the rain he sought shelter under a chestnut tree which stood in the field, and while under it a bolt of lightning descended and struck the tee. Running down the trunk the lightning was attracted by Mr. Lee and entering his body he was shocked to death instantly, dropping to the ground in his tracks. A dog belonging to the deceased also took shelter under the tree and was killed by the same bolt which ended its master's life. Mr. Lee's brother, Frank, who had been assisting in the harvest, has just entered the barn a short distance from the scene with a load of hay witnessed the fatality. The deceased was a son of the late George S. Lee, and was an honest, hard-working, thrifty man. A Sad Accident John Wable, aged about forty-five years, residing at Sand Spring, this county, was instantly killed Thursday, Dec 24th, whilst engaged in cutting down trees on the land of B. W. Hoff. The unfortunate man was struck by a falling limb sometime during the morning of the above day and was not found until late in the afternoon. He was the sole comfort and support of his aged mother who is past three score and ten. His remains were taken to his late home on Christmas morning. Mr. Wable reside fourteen years in Colorado, and returned to his home in this county only eighteen months ago where he went to keeping house with his mother. He was kind and loved by all, especially children for whom he always had kind words and little gifts. He would rather give than to receive. He lived with the writer for many months and I do not know that he ever had an enemy. He remarked a few days before his death that religion was to do for others. He always showed this for he was untiring in helping those that were unable to do for themselves. His funeral was the largest ever held in the community and many tears were shed for love of him and sympathy for his mother. He was a grand-son of Gabriel Friend, one of the pioneers of this county. Rev. Skidmore, of Friendsville, officiated at the funeral. X. The Republican - January 14, 1897 Date of Death: Dec 24, 1896

Hoyes Mrs. Cornelius Savage, of Sang Run, died on Wednesday, after a long and painful illness, and was buried on Friday on the home place. She was a good neighbor, a kind and loving wife and a devoted mother. The Republican - July 1, 1897 Date of death: June 30, 1897 Having been slight notice of the death of Mrs. Mary Ann Savage, which occurred at her home near Sang Run, June 23, 1897, we deem it no more than just to speak of at least some of the good qualities of her life. Her age was above sixty-eight years. To all those who knew her she was a living epistle known and read by them. She was industrious, self-denying, charitable and kind to all, and ever ready and willing to lend a helping hand in every time of need. Being quiet, gentle, patient, forbearing and sympathetic, this good woman made no distinction among those she visited in doing them good; in visiting the sick, relieving the suffering, and distributing to needs and necessities, thus willing as it were, to sacrifice her own life for that of others. Her sorrowing children feel the heavy loss of a dear, devoted, kind and loving christian mother. Her husband preceded her to the spirit world over four years ago. She joined the Brethren or Dunkard Church about nine years ago, and until the time had lived a member of the M. E. Church. She bore her sickness with great christian fortitude, often saying that she was fully resigned to the will of the Lord. A few day before her death one of her daughters asked her if she should sing her a hymn, one she had composed, being thus: As fades the world from out my view, So fades within my breast its charms. To this she replied, "yes, yes, you know I always loved singing." Then proceeding till these lines were reached, "Tis heaven, O heaven, my soul delights, To view they glories all sublime. a saintly smile was seen to come over her face, and lifting up her feeble hands she clasped them together and looked upward as if already enjoying a foretaste of Heaven. Thus peacefully and serenely closed the life of a good woman. The funeral services were conducted by Elder T. W. Sines, from the text of her own selection, found in Rev. 21st chapter and 4th verse, after which her remains were interred on the home place beside those of her husband. Thus one by one fall the members of a family till all shall have crossed over; but a glorious reunion awaits the faithful. A FRIEND The Republican - July 15, 1897 Date of death: June 23, 1897 [Despite the different death dates noted; I believe both obituaries are for Mary Ann (Friend) Savage, wife of Cornelius Ward Savage]
SAVAGE-Charles Hilleary, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. R. Savage, of Deer Park, died on Friday last. The child was aged 5 months and 14 days. The Republican-Oct 4, 1900 (date of death listed with article on Ruth Enlow Library site - Sept. 28, 1900) OBITUARY -pub. 09/26/1901-(Vol.25, No.29)-The Republican Newspaper, Oakland, Maryland. Amos Wesley Savage was born at Sang Run, Md. on August 30, 1826, and died at his home in the same neighborhood on September 6, 1901, aged 75 years and 6 days. He was the youngest son of Robinson and Sarah Savage, who were both noble Christian characters and preceded him years ago to the better land. His father was a leading man in his neighborhood and served a number of years as magistrate and was also a school teacher in his time and was noted for honesty, integrity and general uprightness. In character the son closely resembled the father. He was converted in early life and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he was an active member and a faithful Sunday school worker for many years. He died the peaceful death of the righteous, and after the funeral services, which were conducted by his pastor, his body was laid to rest by the side of that of his recently departed wife, where they together await the dawning of that "Blessed Day." He was the father of nine children: had 25 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. May they all live so that they meet him in that Heavenly Home. D.A. Friend, Pastor. Charlie Monot, a little son of Mrs. John Savage, died Sunday morning of congestion of the brain and was taken to Rawlings Monday for burial. The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved parents and relatives. The Republican -July 27, 1899 Date of death: July 23, 1899 (John Savage was the son of ?) Miss Fannie Pearl Savage was born in Allegany County, MD, July 5th, 1872, and died in King George County, Virginia, Feb. 23, 1889. She left home about one year ago and worked in Washington until a few months since, when she went to make her home with a family in Virginia, where she died. She died of diphtheria, and was sick but four days. She joined the M. E. Church, and wrote to her mother some weeks before she took sick saying she was trying to be a good girl, and longed to return home, and hoped to come in the near future to stay at home; but died before she was permitted to do so. She died calling for her mother, that dear name none can forget. She died far from home and friends, and was laid to rest by strange hands, but we trust she is in a better world. She leaves a father and mother and brothers and sisters to mourn her loss. "A few more years shall roll, A few more seasons come; And we shall be with those that rest, Asleep within the tomb." That is the reason George's true status came up. My sister has applied for DAR. But DAR has no record of George as patriot. After seeing the reference in the Garrett County history page, we need to do some further digging. Walt Warnick has been unable to find anything to date. But I am still pursuing it. It may just be a "family" story with no basis. It appears that descendant Oscar Fazenbaker, provided this information: "GEORGE FAZENBAKER -Was from Hesse-Castle, Germany. Was a Hessian soldier hired by the British from the King of Prussia to fight the American colonists. He was captured at Trenton, NJ by the American soldiers, sometime in the 1770's. He then fought with General Washington against the British. He is buried on the Ezra Michael's farm in Garrett County (Aaron Run Road) near Barton. (Told by Oscar Fazenbaker, who is the fifth generation from Geo. Fazenbaker).Grave is unmarked." You might also want to check with the Garrett County Historical Society, Oakland, MD 301-334-3226, as I believe a list of Revolutionary Soldiers was printed in their publication "Glade Star'. They "might" be able to provide more information as to the source of this information. I don't have the Glade Star publication in front of me at the moment and I am not sure that list included George Fazenbaker. You might also want to check with the owner of this site (Hart Family); perhaps they have additional notes that might help you with your search. I have no connection to the Fazenbaker family. -----Original Message----- From: mdgarret-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdgarret-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter Kilcullen Sent: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 9:58 AM To: mdgarret@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] FAZENBAKER, George My ancestry descends from Conrad, another of George's children. It is not clear whether he was captured by the Americans or if he deserted. I am not aware of any evidence that shows that he affiliated with the Revolutionaries. Of George's nine children, the eldest, Jacob Fazenbaker, married a daughter of an American Revolutionary War veteran, Daniel Reckner. Thus, all of Jacob's female descendants should be eligible for the DAR. Among George's other children, there may also be connections to veterans of the American side of the War, although I have not thoroughly researched this possibility. Death of John L. Browning The following sketch of the life of the late John L. Browning, who was buried in Oakland last Sunday afternoon, appeared in the Cumberland News on Tuesday morning. The funeral of John Lynn Browning occurred yesterday afternoon from St. Paul's M. E. Church, Oakland, MD. He died on May 31, 1895, at the ripe age of 86 years. The deceased was the second son of Meshack Browning, the great hunter of the Alleganies. When he attained his majority he was without means, but went bravely to work and by industry and economy accumulated a comfortable fortune. He lived on a fine estate of some eighteen hundred acres, about eight miles from Oakland. In 1834, he married Maria Thayer, sister of the late Ralph Thayer. In 1884, they celebrated their golden wedding, and at the time of his decease had enjoyed sixty-on years of married life. Mrs. Browning, who is eight months his junior, survives him. The fruits of this union were eight children, the youngest of whom is now over 40 years of age, and strange as it may seem the first death in this family which has engaged in a period of sixty years was the husband and father. The deceased was not only one of the oldest but one of the most prominent citizens of Garrett County. The Browning family to which he belonged is the largest family in the county, and occupies a prominent place in its history. He always took an active part in public matters, but never held pubic office, except that of county commissioner in Allegany before Garrett County was formed. In politics he was a Democrat. About two years ago during a Methodist revival, the deceased was happily converted and joined the M. E. Church. During his declining days he was a happy Christian and his death was triumphant. As a neighbor he was held in universal esteem. To know his real worth however, it was necessary to see him in his own home where he dispensed a generous hospitality and delighted in the association of his friends and neighbors. To his wife and children he was always affectionate and tender, displaying a devotion to them which was beautiful as it is rare. Services were conducted at the residence yesterday morning by Rev. J. M. Davis, of Oakland. In the afternoon the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. S. K. Arbuthnot, pastor of St. Paul's. The text was "Thou shalt come to they grave in a full age like as a shock of corn cometh in his season." Job 5, and 26. The pall bearers were Edward Tagart, Thomas J. Ralston, George J. Walters, Henry Fredlock, Rudolph Beckman and Lemuel Mail. The interment was in Odd Fellows cemetery, Oakland. Notwithstanding the oppressive heat the funeral was largely attended. Only a small portion of the great crowd could gain admission to the church. We know how feeble are human effort in such a moment to comfort and console those who are bereaved, but weak as they are we tender to the bereaved family our sympathy and condolence.
