Thanks Patty, I should have caught that. I have Nathaniel and Phebe Casteel with daughter Margaret. I also have her married to Thomas Burch. I remember meeting their son Solomon when young. Sol Burch lived in Albright, but I never knew just where. They called him Sol. I have my suspicions that Solomon Wilhelm was father of Phebe but can't find proof. We can't find burial place or place of death for PHebe either. Nathaniel was buried at Albright, just across the bridge going from Kingwood to Albright. Main part of Albright to the right a couple of blocks. My granddad, Henry Harrison Casteel lived along the river there. Lots of buildings, including his house were taken out by the flood of 1986. I think that is date. Of course, he had died 1n 1957. My sister found where he was buried in a book at Kingwood library listing burials listing by CCC. We have assumed - just our own family - that Phebe was probably buried beside him. Enough of my meandering. later Jo ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Thompson" <Patty125@comcast.net> To: <mdgarret@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 31, 2009 2:06 PM Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Burch/Friend Genealogy > It is just a genealogy long shot but I have in my files: > Nathaniel Casteel 1819-1883 m. Martha Friend was the wife of Jefferson Burch (sometimes spelled Birch) Martha (1871- ?) and Jefferson (1876-1939) are buried In Keller Glade Cemetery, Keller Glade Church Rd. (very close to the WV border) I do not know if they had children or not. I am trying to determine the name of Burch parents for Jefferson Burch. The 1920 Friendsville, Garrett Co. Maryland shows Jefferson & Martha living in District 2 owning their own home, Also in this same area are the Burch families of John A. Burch, Wesley Burch,& Charles A. Burch...all owning their own home. Please contact me if you have knowledge of Jefferson & Martha Burch. It is obvious Jefferson was related to John A. Burch (1861-1931) husband of Amanda Casteel/ Burch. John is also buried in Keller Glade cemetery. I will appreciate any help you can offer me. Thank you so much! Clara W. Thompson St. Charles, MO
Fatal Accident A sad accident occurred near Swanton on the B&O railroad on last Saturday night, in which Wm. Harden, of Accident, lost his life, and the news of which, when brought to Accident on Sabbath afternoon, caused the hearts of his parents and near relative to overflow with grief and sorrow. Just exactly how it happened no one knows. The following particulars however were furnished the write and are as near correct as can at present be known. Mr. Harden, it seems, had bought a ticket to Piedmont and return, and had gone to Piedmont. It is supposed that he missed the westward bound mail train, and then either walked part of the way or boarded a freight train and rod to No. 40 and got off there, and then got on again, or else waited till the train from which he was thrown came along and stopped at No. 40 to take in water and then boarded it, as he was seen by some of the train men at some little distance ahead of the standing train approaching it. About a quarter of a mile from No. 40 (a water tank below Swanton) it is supposed the accident occurred. His watch was first found, than his hat, vest and coat. His body was carried to the crossing at Swanton where it was dropped, and was found between 9 and 10 o'clock by Jno. Uphold and Pat Coyle, considerably mangled. His head was cut off from the right ear down to the neck at the left shoulder. His face and skull were crushed. His legs were broken as well as one arm. Than mangled body was brought to Accident on Sunday afternoon by Mr. Bolden, of Oakland. On Monday at 10 o'clock services were held in the English Lutheran Church at Accident. The sermon was preached from 2 Samuel, 18th chapter, 33d verse. A large concourse of people followed the remains to the grave. His remains were laid in the English Lutheran cemetery. He was 26 years and 28 days old. "Billy" as he was familiarly called, carried the mail fro a number of years from Accident to Grantsville. At the time of his death, he was carrying the mail from Oakland to Accident. He was obliging and always ready to do any one a favor. He was possessed of some good traits of character, but like many another young man, he had his besetting sin which led him to become wayward and forsake a father's and mother's love, and which, no doubt, shortened his life. The parents and friends of the deceased have the prayers and sympathies of the Christian people of Accident and community. M. On Saturday, William Harden, of Accident, was killed by a freight train near this place. It is supposed he was stealing a ride and fell between the cars, dashing out his brains upon the crossties. it was impossible to recognize the body as the face was nearly all torn away and his body dragged for more than a half mile, but from letters found in the clothing he was identified and his body taken to Oakland Sunday morning and placed in charge of undertake (name is blurred; I can't read it. p.a.t.) The Republican Nov 16, 1889 (Per Ruth Enlow Library -Death of Death November 9, 1889) At Indianola, Warren County, Iowa, March 30th, 1877, Birtie May, only daughter of John E. and Mary J. Russell, aged 8 years and 2 months. May the angels welcome her home. At the same place, March 15th, 1877, Isabel Elmaria Harden, eldest daughter of Levi and Elizabeth Hammon, aged 32 years. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn their loss. The Republican - April 21, 1877 (Per Ruth Enlow Library - Date of Birth for Isabel-1845) Died, near Mineral Springs, this county, May 26th, 1883, Mrs. Luvenia Harden, aged about thirty-three years, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Ann Green. Her husband preceded her to the spirit world several years, and a daughter about eighteen months. For a number of years she has been a sufferer from that fatal disease, consumption. About two months ago she had to give up working for the bread and perisheth, and set her house in order, for she felt she must die. The first acquaintance I had with her was the first of April. I found her in a state of mind to receive the word and enjoy singing and prayer. She desired to receive the sacrament of bread and wine, and in the reception of these by faith she thought of nobler things, then with the encouragement of Christians she received the Holy Spirit in her heart, and said that the Lord had blessed her soul. There and then she realized that "if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." I visited her a few times after and found her trusting in Jesus. I have been informed by those who were there five days before her death, that she spoke to her friend and exhorted them to be wise, live for heaven and eternal life, lay up unfading treasures above. It was privilege to be with her when she passed away. Her mind clear until life's latest moments. Five minutes before the spirit left the prison house of clay, she made this profound prayer: "Lord, have mercy upon us, bless us and save us all for Jesus' sake;" and then, by faith, she rested on the Eternal Rock, the Rock of Ages; and in a clear and distinct voice she repeated that familiar chorus: "I am trusting, Lord, in thee, dear Lamb of Calvary." In a very short time she passed away without a struggle-"fell asleep in Jesus," "blessed sleep from which none ever wake to weep." Well might one say: "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like theirs." Dearest sister thous hast left us, Here thy loss we deeply feel But 'tis God that hath bereft us, He can all our sorrow heal. Yet again we hope to meet thee, When the day of life is fled; Then in Heaven, with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tear is shed. A. M. BOWLIN The Republican - June 2, 1883

Gustavus A. Broadwater was born September 24, 1845, in Garrett County, MD, and departed this life October 10, 1901, aged 56 years and 16 days. On last Friday morning one week he professed faith in Christ and expressed his desire to unite with the Methodist Episcopal Church, the church to which his father now belongs and the one from which his mother took her transit to Glory several years in his advance. He was received, then he requested the Communion, which was administered to him in company of his father and brother Gilead, his wife and daughter, his sister, Mrs. Augustine, and a friend, Miss Maust. He spoke fully and freely with respect to his future hope. He also spoke at another time that he was not concerned about the things of this world, but was looking forward to the end. He also said a he neared life's close, as he spoke to his brother, "We have had our troubles here, but I am going to a better place than this." All was well seemingly as his friends went down into the Valley of the Shadow with him. He was conscious at 11 a.m. and though unable to articulate sentences he signaled he was resigned to his fate. Brother Broadwater quit this life of suffering while the clock struck one. He gave up his house of clay, passed into the beyond from us. E. C. BROADWATER- Jerome Duvall, son of J. S. and Mariam Broadwater, was born Sept. 26, 1882, and died Aug. 15, 1891, age 8 years, 10 months and 19 days. His death was caused by being run over by a Stearn threshing machine on the 2nd inst. Before passing away he called each one of the family to bid them goodbye, and then fell asleep in Jesus' arms. He was loved by all who knew him and the idol of his home. His funeral was preached by the writer in the M. E. Church, to a large concourse of sympathizing friends. We laid him to rest beside those who had gone before. We shall miss him because his seat will be empty. But whilst we miss him we mourn not as those who have not hope, for Jesus declared in His sacred Word, "Suffer little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God." The bereaved friends have the sympathy of the community. "This lovely child thus early torn >From our fond breasts away, With silent grief is gently borne To its lone bed of clay. We plant thee here, with tears bedewed, Bright flower of heavenly dye, And often shall our griefs renewed, These flowing founts supply. But thou shalt yet in beauty bloom, A plant of paradise; And gladden with they sweet perfume Our mansion in the skies. J. H. E. Death from a Snake Bite Sunday evening last Beeson, aged about 14 years, the eldest son of Mr. Jonas Glotfelty, residing on Deep Creek, about 9 miles from Oakland, was bitten by a rattlesnake, under the following circumstances: He had bee out caring for some cattle, and whilst on his way home stopped to gather and eat some blackberries, when he was struck on the inside of the writs. He did not see or hear the snake, but felt that he had been bitten by a rattlesnake, and ran home, thereby heating his blood and aiding the spread of the poison throughout the system. Dr. Glotfelty, of Accident, was called, who, upon an examination of the arm, said that the boy must die. The arm swelled to such an extent as to burst, and the boy died about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, after suffering untold agony. The Republican - Aug 15, 1885 (Calculated date of death Aug 9, 1885) Glotfelty- On Saturday evening, May 20th, at her home, after a short illness of diphtheria, Delia, aged six years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thaddeus Glotfelty, of near McHenry, this county. Her funeral took place on Monday. Within the past week, eight of the members of Mr. Glotfelty's family have been stricken with diphtheria in its most virulent form, including his wife. Mr. Glotfelty being the only member escaping its ravages. The attending physician, Dr. Mahlon Hinebaugh, has hopes of saving the lives of those still ill. The Republican - May 25, 1899 Miss Lucy A. Broadwater, daughter of the late Josephus Broadwater, was born Aug. 25, 1867, and died Dec. 19, 1889, of typhoid fever, in her 21st year. She was of a sweet and loving spirit, and although not a member of any church, yet being reared by Christian parents, she was strictly moral, and greatly beloved by all who knew her. As soon as she was taken down upon the bed of affliction she commenced seeking a preparation of heart for that solemn change which she felt would soon take place. It was not long until she professed faith in Christ and rejoiced in the prospect of meeting her brother, who had passed over about one year ago, and her father, who had preceded her about 19 days. A short time before she passed away, while her mother was weeping by her side and saying to her that she could not give her up, she said, "Oh, mother, it will not be long until you come also," and then she said, "Listen! I hear papa singing." Her mother said to here" what is he singing?" and she said, "listen a moment and I will tell you." After listening a short time she said: "Oh! he is singing "Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow." It seemed that she had got so near the other shore that she caught the strains of the music of the heavenly world, and soon she joined her voice with those gone before in singing the songs of redeeming love. May the bereaved family take comfort in the hope of after a while meeting their loved ones. "Far from a world of grief and sin Forever with the Lord shut in." H. E. FRIEND The Republican - January 7, 1888
GLOTFELTY- At his home near Crellin, after an illness of several weeks, Adrian Glotfelty, aged 66 years, 5 months, 18 days. The deceased was a highly respected citizen and a member of one of the largest and most influential families within the border of the county. He leaves several children, all of whom are grown, two of his sons being Messrs. Charles and Joseph Glotfelty. His funeral took place yesterday morning, the interment being made on the family burying ground on the old home place, now owned by Mr. Nimrod Glotfelty, near McHenry. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. M. Glenn, pastor of the Underwood U. B. Church, in the church in McHenry. The Republican-Aug 3, 1899 GLOTFELTY- On Saturday, March 21, 1903, at his home in Friendsville, Pierson Glotfelty, aged about 28 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Glotfelty, of near McHenry. On the 10th inst. Mr. Glotfelty, who was employed by the Bear Creek Lumber Company at Friendsville as a workman on their saw mill, was stuck in the side by a piece of timber thrown back by the saw. The injury, through somewhat painful at the time, was not thought after a few days to be of a serious nature as no bones were broken and the skin not being bruised at the point of contact. The injury was purely an internal one and of course the consequences could not be foreseen by the attending physicians. Mr. Glotfelty was married on February 18th, 1903, to Miss Alice Cover, of Friendsville. His funeral took place at 10 o'clock on Monday from the M. E. Church at McHenry after which the interment was made on the Glotfelty homestead nearby. To the relatives of the deceased the sympathies of the entire community is extended. The Republican - March 26, 1903 (Calculated date of death- March 21, 1903) Corrigendum to Maryland's Garrett County Graves, compiled by the Garrett County Historical Society (1995) page 15 & 16. Page 103 (referring to the Graves of Garrett County published by the Youghiogheny Chapter of the DAR -Book I) Glotfelty Cemetery Across the road from where the cemetery is now there was the (older) cemetery, where the parents of Adrian, Nimrod, Jesse, and Mahlon are all buried. My parents told me that the (old) graveyard was plowed up by the new owner, when my parents rode horseback from Oakland to those graveyards. This was before we had a car, so before 1916. The fieldstone markers were then piled in the fence corner, so no records are available. Info. by Eleanor Robey, White Plains, MD.
There are various spellings of the name of Amos' second wife, e.g., Alice Warnick or Eliza Warwick. Information about the wife is sparse. (Does anyone know anything more about her?) There is too little info to reliably place her on the Warnick family tree.
