Connie, Thanks so much for the pictures . . . I really enjoyed them. Great picture of you and Lynn. Lois
By chance, would anyone know of any history written about Keyser's ridge? "Garrett County, A History of Maryland's Tableland by Stephen Schlosnagle and The Garrett County Bicentennial Committee" mentions on page 51: Squatters living near the mouth of Savage River in 1787 included Charles QUEEN, Patrick BURNS, Charles BOYLES, Joseph DAVIS, George FAZENBAKER, Moses TICHENAL, Johanes and Michael PAUGH, Henry KITE, Joseph WARNICK, John RYAN, James DENNISON, and John STREET. . . . . . Squatters along ***Braddock Road*** at the time of the military surveys included Benjamin CODDINGTON, Peter CRAWL, *****John KISER***** (from whom Keyser's Ridge takes its name) John SIMKINS, John JONAS, Matthias BARNSTREDDER, Jacob STROM, James MCPIPE, Joseph MOUNTAIN and Jesse TOMLINSON I have now found information that a John Kiser (originally from Hagerstown, (m. Susan Ieis), in 1793 located on a farm, now known as the Kiser farm, near Latrobe, Westmoreland County, (PA) All of this somehow seems connected to my mother's family and the Kiser farm was where she grew up, the family sold the farm in about 1935. Any help at all would be appreciated. Pat-T

Kenneth, Dorothy has an entry in my book about the Warnick family. She was daughter of Arthur Bowser and Hilda (Stanton). Hilda was a descendant of the original Walrnick pioneers, hence her entry in my book. James W. Hoover's full name was James William Hoover, and he was known by the nickname "Bill". I have no definite information about Dorothy's marriages except to Bill. Dorothy passed away just a few years ago. I am curious about the nature of your interest in this family. Kenneth, Per the Bittinger Book: Henry Spiker the the third child of Adam Spiker and "Annie" Reckner. The first born, Michael Spiker was born abt 1813. Joseph Spiker, the sixth child was b. 1/14/1824--Given that a child was born every 2 years and Henry was the 3rd born, he was probably b. abt 1819-20. Henry m Lavina ? (no other info there) -- If he were 20 when he married, that would be around 1840. Jacob "Jake" Bittinger (late 1840's-3/15/1929) m. (1) Goldie Ellen Fazenbaker (b. abt 1847-d. 12/19/1912)--seemed to have lived in the vacinity of Bear Hill; m. (2) Jennie Mae Shrout (3/22/1897-8/29/1980). Jake and Jennie Mae's Children: (It would appear from the dates of the children, Jake and Jennie could have married anywhere between 1913-16 judging by the ages of their first two children. That's as close as I could get with the information available in the Bittinger Book. It also appears Jennie Mae was about 50 years younger than Jake. Daughter (died as an infant) Orpha Roberta Bittinger (1/14/1918) Alvie Bittinger (died as an infant) Clarence Hillary Bittinger (b. 2/22/1920) Ervin Walter Bittinger (8/7/1923) Glenn Elwood Bittinger (8/22/1928) So, it is likely Jenny m. Henry Spiker sometime after Jake died (1929) and would have been in her early 30s at that time. There was more information on the Bittinger children, but nothing more about the Spiker union. Carolyn, Both Samuel (m. Ann Rebecca Ridenour) and William Robert Garner (m. Nancy Ridenour) are sons of William Garner and Frances Roberts. You included both in your Morton info. I was wonderng what the chances were of brothers (Garner) marrying sisters (Ridenour). Some place I found that Ann Rebecca had a brother John. A dash coming where a name should be expected means that the name is unknown. A pair of hypens within brackets means that both the given name and the surname are unknown. C-2, or c-3, means that the list of children which follows is believed to be given in the order of age, or in rotation. Such expression as Ann Brown Smith refers to a widow whose maiden name was Ann Brown. Where she is known to have a middle name only, the initial of the same is given, as in the instance, Ann J. Brown Smith. Where the maiden surname is unknown, the title Mrs. is prefixed to the late husbands surname. When a small c follows a date, it means that the date given is only approximate, the actual date being unknown. When a date immediately follows the name of a married consort, it refers to the date of marriage. When a question mark follows a given name, but not a surname, or vice versa, it means that only the name is in doubt which preceded the question mark. M? Means that we are not sure that the John Roe in question was the one who married Mary Doe. It indicates, however, that a certain John Roe did marry a Mary Doe. John Smith of Garrett would mean John Smith of Garrett county, and not John Smith, son of Garrett Smith. When a person migrates from Preston, the destination is often indicated. When a county name is not followed by that of the state to which it belongs, a county of one of the Virginias is to be understood. There are no instances where there is a common name for a county in Virginia and a county in West Virginia. Also, the state name is not given in the case of the neighboring counties of Garrett, Somerset, Fayette, and Greene. There is a Greene county in Virginia and a Fayette county in West Virginia, but neither of these calls for mention in this chapter. When a star follows the name of the place of destination, -- as Tucker*, -- it means the person married in such place. D.61*, or k. 61*, refers to a man who lost his life in military service in the war of 1861. But if the year of death is known, it is given accordingly. A dagger standing after a mans given name means that to the best of our knowledge, there was resident in Preston in 1907, posterity of that person in the male line. To avoid repetition, descent is reckoned in the male line. Where a daughter marries into another pioneer family, the reader is referred to the same. Each given name under the same topic refers to a group-family unrelated to others of the same name, except when such fact is stated. * * * * * * * * ==== MDGARRET Mailing List ==== If you need help with this list, make sure to email the list administrator, Carol Hepburn, at chepburn@cox.net. ==== MDGARRET Mailing List ==== If you need help with this list, make sure to email the list administrator, Carol Hepburn, at chepburn@cox.net. --WebTV-Mail-22748-634--
