Sorry, it has been so long since this was posted, but I finally have determined that you are right, Sevilla is indeed a Rodeheaver, and her marriage to Elijah Sines is where the name Sevilla Sines comes from. She IS the daughter of John Rodeheaver and Delilah Friend. Now that her identity is established, can anyone provide more info on her date of birth beyond "1863"? And children born, whether to her marriage to Elijah Sines or Charles Edward McCrobie? Thanks! -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, June 16, 2003 14:24:15 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Sines - McCrobie Hi Bonnie, You said: "..I am trying to determine if Rodeheaver was her middle name or a maiden name and she was a widow at the time of her marriage...." . I have Sevilla's first husband, Elijah Sines, listed as having died Nov.12.1940. Thus she wasn't a widow when she married her second husband, Charles Edward McRoby, on Feb.21.1908. . You said: "...Since both of Charles' wives last name were Sines, it would seem that perhaps the two women were either sisters, or sisters-in-law. Any help here?..." . O.K., let me walk you through this: Sevilla's 1st husband, Elijah Sines, is the s/o William Jonas Sines, (my hubby's 2xgreat-grandfather) gs/o Major Henry Sines and the nephew of Leonard Sines. Rheua Belle Sines was the d/o James Leonard Sines, gd/o the above Leonard Sines, ggd/o Major Henry Sines. Thus Sevilla's 1st husband Elijah Sines is the 1C1R (1st cousin once removed ) of Rheua Belle Sines. As for any relationship between Rheua and Sevilla: other than both were married to Charles, right now I would just say Sevilla was the ex-wife of Rheua's 1C1R. Off hand I personally don't think SINES was this Sevilla's maiden name. If it is her maiden name then I can't place her among any of the Sines families out of Garrett Co. at this point. Maybe she is from one of the Preston Co. Sines lines that I haven't tracked yet? Major Henry Sines (founding father of the Garrett Co. Sines) once lived in Preston Co. His homeplace was located at present day Cranesville. There were other Sines families in Preston Co. however at the time he moved his family to Garrett, and I have several cases of Sines women, (not descended from Major Henry) out of Preston Co. that married into Garrett Co. families. . Do you have a birth place for your Sevilla? I'm afraid I just haven't had a chance to really work on her yet. I suspect she was a Rodeheaver out of a family from another county/state besides Garrett Co., MD. You know, Elijah Sines & family had not always lived in Garrett Co. MD. His father, William Jonas Sines, was born in Preston Co. but moved to Garrett as a child. After the Civil War, when Elijah was about 12 or so, his parents moved to a remote area in Upshur Co. WV along with several other families from Garrett. Of father William's nine sons, only two lived out their lives in Upshur Co however. The other seven sons had either stayed in Garrett or they returned to Garrett as young adults to live. Even father William himself returned to Garrett Co. after his wife, Eliza (Johnson) Sines, died in Upshur Co. in 1907. He then lived out the rest of his long life in Garrett Co., dying there when nearly 101 years old. Elijah Sines had returned earlier to Garrett as a young man. He is found, at nearly 21 yrs of age, living in Garrett Co.with his older brother John in the 1880 census. . I know that there are Rodeheaver families, some out of Preston Co., who once lived in (or still do) in Upshur Co. WV. You might want to consider checking them out as a family source for your Sevilla if she doesn't fit into any of the Garrett Co. Rodeheavers. In fact, I would suggest you look into the John & Delilah Rodeheaver family that lived in Pleasant, Preston Co. WV. They have a daughter named Savilla who is the right age. They are listed in the 1880 census under the spelling of RODEHAVER that year, (the Sines in Garrett were listed as SIGNS that year) and their daughter Savilla is listed as age 16 or b: abt. 1864. Your Sevilla was b: Sep.10.1863 so this could be a match. Worth a look into. Elijah Sines had several Sines aunts & uncles living in Preston Co. and I think he may have had a tie to the Pleasant area through his Uncle William Cupp. His Uncle Leonard Sines, Rheua's grandfather, lived in Portland until elderly. And of course, both Rheua & her father James Leonard Sines were born in Preston Co. The Sines families, though scattered about, remained close knit, so Elijah could have met up with Sevilla outside of Garrett Co. Right now the only "Sivilla/Sevilla/Savilla Sines" that I have in my Sines database is the granddaughter of William Jonas Sines. I am certain that this Sivilla was not married to Charles however. She was b: Apr.11.1894 over in Goshen, Upshur Co. WV, where she lived out her life, dying there when only 28 yrs old on Aug.11.1922. . Hope I have given you some good leads, meanwhile I will keep my eyes open for your Sevilla. The Broadwater family is very very large. Just heard that the name is found in the Domesday Book in England, a product of the census ordered by William the Conqueror. Listers - the accompanying message came to me but we aren't planning a trip west very soon. Hopefully someone with access to the Bittinger history can help Carolyn Leonard. Thank you. Stark and Sevilla Bittinger. I noticed you had several connections between the Starks and Bittingers and wondered if you might know anything about James K. I believe him to have been born in May 1839, Maryland. He (believed) had a child with Mary Anne Bittinger (daughter of Jonathan Bittinger who was a son of John Henry Bittinger and Barbara Bowser) named Cyrus W. Stark. On December 30, 1862, he married Sevilla Bittinger (daughter of George Bittinger, another son of John Henry Bittinger and Barbara Bowser). He and Sevilla with family moved to Linn County, Missouri. I can't find anything about James K. Stark's background, almost like he just appeared. I know there were other Starks in Garrett County (including yours) and can't help but think that there should be some connection. Any help? Thanks for anything you can offer, Carolyn Leonard
Hi again, I list Savilla/Sevilla (d/o Delilah & John Rodeheaver) as married to (1) Elijah Sines (s/o Eliza Johnson & William Jonas Sines) in 1884 and with two sons: James Alvin Sines, b: Jun.16.1891, Garrett Co. MD d: May.17.1964 (spouse: Lulu Mamie Dewitt), and William Oakley Sines, b: Jul.20.1894 Oakland, Garrett Co. MD d: Sep.11.1983 Newcastle, PA (spouse: Goldie Pearl VanSickle) Elijah (b: May.12.1859 in Swallow Falls) & Savilla/Sevilla apparently divorced; his death date is listed as Nov.12.1940 in Friendsville. ...... I then list her as married to (2) Charles Edward McRoby (s/o Rachel Ellen Lewis & William Andrew McRoby) on Feb.21.1908 in Garrett Co. MD. At this point I really don't know if she & Charles had any children together. While I list Charles as having five children: Grace "Gracie" (Mrs. Leslie Rodeheaver), Jasper, Russell, Ray & Theodore, unfortunately I only have birth dates for his three oldest children by his first wife Rheua Belle Sines (d/o Margaret E. Wilhelm & James Leonard Sines) Gracie, Jan.1896, Jasper, Sep.1897 and Russell, Jan.1900. (as listed in the 1900 census: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/md/garrett/census/1900/42-11a.gif) Not having Ray & Theodore's birth dates yet I couldn't say who their mother was; Rheua or Savilla/Sevilla. ....... Edward's son Edward Palmer Wolford was married to my first cousin once removed Patricia Ann Bosley, daughter of Carl and Winnie (Butler) Bosley. Piedmont Herald, Dec. 23, 1965 Services for Edward H. Wolford, 71, of 11 East Hampshire Street, who died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Chaney, Silver Spring, Md., were held yesterday morning at the Fredlock Funeral Home. Rev. Raymond W. Gau, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiated. Interment was in Philos Cemetery, Westernport. Serving as active and honorary pallbearers were H. Glenn Boyd, Charles B. Hardegan, Jr., Ernest Hitt, Elmer J. Shaver, Ralph Biggs, William Stump, Henry C. Johnson, Eugene Paxton, C. Randall Smith, Floyd Davis and Richard Grove. Mr. Wolford had been staying in Silver Spring because of the illness of his wife, Mrs. Bernice (Palmer) Wolford, who is a patient in Loretta Haines' Nursing Home, Washington. A son of the late Henry M. and Rhoda (Albright) Wolford, he was a native of Westernport and a graduate of Westernport High School class of 1912. He was a retired employee of the W Va. Pulp and Paper Company and before going to the Luke Mill, he was an employee of Wm. T. Sigler Planing Mill. A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the Kelly-Mansfield Post 52, American Legion and a member and elder of the Piedmont Presbyterian Church. Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves one son, Edward Palmer Wolford, Hyattsville, Md.; a brother, Raymond Wolford, of Keyser, and three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Keys, Keyser; Mrs. Lacy M. Mann, Thomas, and Mrs. Mary Talbott, Newport News, Va., and two grandchildren.
Piedmont Herald, Thursday, April 23, 1964 Mrs. Emma Broadwater, 87, of 64 West Harrison Street, Piedmont, died yesterday in Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, where she underwent surgery Monday morning. She was the wife of Lee Broadwater. The body is at the Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, where funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Sumner Sawyers, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, Piedmont. Interment will take place in Philos Cemetery, Westernport. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Coleman, Mrs. Broadwater was a native of Garrett County but had resided here for many years. Twice married, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Daniel Gross. Mrs. Broadwater was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, of Piedmont, and the Daughters of America of Bloomington. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Coutts, Of Jewett, Ohio; two sons, Stanley Gross, of Meyersdale, Pa. and Austin Gross, of Jewett. Also surviving are two brothers, John Coleman, of Kitzmiller, and Harley Coleman, of Fort Ashby; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Domer, of Carnegie, Pa., and Mrs. Mae Iman of Kitzmiller. Ten grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren also survive.
Piedmont Herald, Thursday, Sept. 26, 1963 Requiem high mass for Mrs. Catherine M. Peacock, 75, of Keyser, formerly of Luke, who died Monday morning in Potomac Valley Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident, was celebrated yesterday morning in the Church of the Assumption, Keyser. The Rev. Robert Ruth, assistant pastor, was celebrant of the mass. Burial took place in Philos Cemetery, Westernport. Serving as pallbearers were James Racco, Norris Munsie, Thomas McDonald, Bernard Rankin, Peter Johnston and John Stakem. Mrs. Peabody was injured about 7:25 p.m. Sunday when the car in which she was riding with her daughter, Mrs. Winnie P. Herbert, also of Keyser, collided on a sharp curve in McCoole with a car operated by William L. Zais, Jr., of McCoole. Investigating authorities said Zais, who was driving east bound, failed to keep to the right of the center of the highway on the curve and struck the left side of the oncoming Herbert vehicle. Born in Scotland, Mrs. Peacock was a daughter of the late John and Bridget Maguire. She had resided in Luke for many years before moving to Keyser about 14 years ago. Her husband, Frank Peacock, died in August 1938. In addition to Mrs. Herbert, Mrs. Peacock is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Christine Davis, of Piedmont, and one granddaughter, Miss Katherine Parker, also of Piedmont.
>From Carol at the museum: Kempton: According to letter written to Miss West (Elizabeth, I assume), dated December 18, 1938, giving information from Mr. L. N. Duling, who had been in Kempton since 1915 and worked in the store there, Kempton was named for Kempton Adams who was a stock holder in the Co. It had been a town for 25 years (in 1938). the company began to sink the shaft in 1913, built the store and began the houses. The first settlers were similar to rest of County with a few Italians and a great many slaves. Mr. Eli Mosser, a man well up in the eighties (in 1938) was the first man to live in Kempton. The mines were opened for work late in 1913. The store, post office and open house were on the West Virginia side of the line while the mines and all the houses were on the Maryland side. While traveling around the corner stone one could walk in four counties and two states. "(That is something not every small town can brag about.)" Hope some of this is helpful or at least interesting. Connie History is preserved through knowledge shared

I am looking for info about a Sarah Keene - who was the third wife of George Rodeheaver. The 1880 census shows she was born in Maryland, but a file at Ancestry gives her a son named Charles B age 18, born in Illinois - who is on the the same census, shown as a step-son. Charles father was born in Kentucky. On that 1880 census - Charles Keene's name is shown as Charlise B Kune - obviously a transcription error. Does anyone have a marriage or death record for Charles? And how about Sarah (Mrs Rodeheaver)? She was age 40 in 1880, so I don't have any idea when she died. George died 22 Jun 1880 in Morgan's Glade. He is buried at Centenary. Would you have a marriage record for Sarah and George? I think it might be Fall 1877. He had another wife who died perhaps in the Spring of 1877. There is suposedly a second wife between these 2 - but I don't see how she fits in - Her name is Minnie Worthington. Help! Help!

Do any of you have Keefers in your history's. Mae Keefer was listed as a boarder with John and Ida Lininger Hetrick in the 1910 census (at age 3). Said she was born in Kansas. Her parents, an older brother, and sister moved to KS in the early 1900s. Mae was born in 1907. The parents split up and Mae's mother returned to MD with the children. She was not able to provide for the children at first and boarded them with other families until she could manage. When Mae's mother returned to take Mae, Mae opted to stay with the Hetricks.
