    3. According to GARRETT COUNTY: A HISTORY OF MARYLAND's TABLELAND, by Stephen Schlosnagle and The Garrett County Bicentennial Committee: "In 1872, when Garrett County was formed, residents of the mountaintop relied solely on word-of-mouth and the United States mail for communication with the outside world. The railroad brought the telegraph line to western Maryland, though, and forty years after Samuel Morse installed his first telegraph line along the Baltimore-Washington tracks of the B&O in 1844, the first Oakland-based telegraph message was sent from the B&O station in Oakland to Baltimore. The year was 1884; the message sender was PATRICK GARRETT. By the end of the century Western Union telegraph stations had been established at Oakland, Mountain Lake Park, Deer Park, and Altamont." page 306 Doris G. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bonnie McCroby Wuensche" <mccroby@hotmail.com> To: <MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 21, 2003 12:10 AM Subject: [MDGARRET] Patrick GARRETT? > Who can tell me about Patrick Garrett? 2. Charles, Do you have the parents of Charles Wilhelm listed in the 1880 census as grandson (3 years old) living with my Anna Mary Hetrick and Andrew Snyder family. Charlie would therefore have been born in 1877 or so. Jonas Hetrick (b. 1856), nephew, was also living with the Snyders. Anna Mary (1830-1906) is my g-grandfather Conrad's (1827-1878) sister. Am also related to Hershberger. Harshbarger is awlful close in spelling. Is there a story there?
