Can you please tell me where the Historic Society is located in oakland, Md. Is that where I would go to do some research on Garrett Co. family. If so do you know days and hours that it would be open. Peggy
Hi Bonnie: William McRobie wasn't the only one enumerated twice that year, and information in one recording didn't always agree with the other. Benjamin and Abraham Moon were enumerated once as "Moon"; once as "Moore". I think undoubtedly it was politics leading up to the Civil War. Redistricting followed the census, so I'm pretty sure the recounts were done for political purposes. Carolyn, Thank you for the Monongalia Co. Censuses for 1810. I saw Dan Martin, Amos Roberts, George Sypolt, George Sypolt, Jr. and several Henry Millers (which is mine?). I even saw a Samuel Right (Wright?). Could he be mine? I do not recall seeing any Hartmans, Hardestys or Messengers; perhaps they came later. I am not asking you for an answer to my questions; they are simply for my own benefit. Delores

Hi Delores, I have the book, too. That's another reason we all love Roy!! : ) Carolyn
thanks! Good luck on your printing and organizing! -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 17:49:27 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Census Locations and other ???? Every time I see something that I think will prove useful in my research I copy (on paper) and save. Of course I can't always find it when I need it. It was just luck that I am busy making copies of my research to send to a relative (in exchange for a photo I've been trying to get my hands on for several years) and I saw that piece again. Carolyn, The courthouse fire in Kingwood of Preston County was in 1869. I am interested in years later than that. By the way, I have Lockhart's book of marriages, births and deaths in Preston Co. during the 1850s. I can do lookups if anyone gives a specific name. I am sorry, but I do not have time to look-up entire families. The book is wonderful because it gives so much detail. It is well worth the purchase price if anyone is looking for those statistics. Roy found the files in a basement of the archives of Richmond, I believe. They were becoming covered with mildew, so his recording the information is a great service. The information comes to an end in 1860, as after the secession of VA, what now became WV no longer sent records to Richmond. Janice Sisler can help with the details of how to purchase the book. Could someone familiar with the Garrett County area, please tell me where the Johnson and Elbow District either was, or is, if they still exist today. Thank you. Kenneth
On Wednesday, April 17,2002 someone by the moniker of <<maclewis@prodigy.net>> covered your question nicely. I was going thru my "piles" of info today and found that e-mail because I thought it was an important piece of information. To quote: " The census day was NOT the day the enumerator arrived at the household,it was the day for which all the statistics of the census were collected." census day 1850 census 1 June 5 months (to take the census) 1860 census 1 June 5 months 1870 census 1June 5 months " 1880 census 1 June 1 month There is more to the e-mail but this answers your question, I think. No, I sure wish he was. I connect to his family through my late husband. he gave me names and dates off the top of his head and I was squibbling fast and furious for fear he wouldn't repeat them. ^..^ I would love to get him to do research for me. He is probably the best researcher you can find. I would like to have his memory. ^..^ While I'm on here, I got into "Heritage Quest" by sheer luck one day. Their CENSUS are unbelievable. I wish i would have stayed on for a lot longer but I got sleepy so I decided I would get back on the next day. The next day, I couldn't get back on. Maybe I can follow one of the instructions on the list and get back on. Anyone who hasn't tried it yet, I want you to know it is GOOD. Harriet
Yes - thank you. It answers my question - and it doesn't... haha! I have some of the census pages dated Dec 31 1860 and some are January 8, with the 1860 crossed out to read 1861 - so it took a long time. This was for Allegany (then), now Garrett Co. I think I will go to the Archives and try to find this post you mention and see if I can make a little more sense of it. I know that some of the later Census' it was very clear about not counting babies who had not been born by a certain date. Maybe some of these problems we find today were anticipated as the next Census came along. :o) -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 14:20:35 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Census Locations and other ???? My question may have a simple answer - but I sure haven't been able to find it... It looks like my 2nd great grandfather was enumerated twice in the 1860 census. The children are the same, even the servant - but the neighbors are different. Also, the Personal Value is abt 10x more on one of the entries than another. I thought that the information was as applied on Jun 1, 1860. What happens if a person moved during the census year - and what were the dates for the census? Some of the pages have a January date with the 1860 shown with a line drawn through the 0, and on some of these, a 1 is written in beside it I went over some pages and saw Dec 1860 then about Jan 4, some of the pages look like described above. How long did they have to collect the data? And was a person supposed to answer with that day's information, or in retrospect? Help!
Hi Lois: I do have a Charles T. Wilhelm on my tree. I don't know if it's the one you are looking for. He is my 4th cousin once removed. His parents were Effie (Garlitz) and Thomas Wilhelm. Maybe someone on the List can answer the question. I stumbled across this one in my i-net browsing. If the books didn't burn with the courthouse fire, there may be one for the years you mention. Carolyn > Carolyn, Is there a similar book covering the time period from > 1880-1915? > >

Bonnie, I believe the telegraph stations were in train stations (towers). James Bordman Cassidy ~1839-bef. 1894 married Catherine Hoye 1849-1916 (my 1/2 grandaunt). James was a telegraph operator for the B&O railroad. Pat-T
