In response to the post of Kathleen Fitzgerald, I am the ggranddaughter of Francis Albanus Friend and submit the following information which I have documented through Pension Files at the National Archives, Preston and Garret County Courthouses, Census Records, etc. Francis Albanus Friend 1824-1862 (7th generation of the Friend Family of Friendsville, son of John Simpson and Sophia Kemp Friend. Francis married Elizabeth Hartman Smith, ____-1855 Daughter of Catherine Smith, Daughter of Frederick and Hannah Wilhelm Smith and niece of Elizabeth Smith that married Elijah Friend son of John Friend, Jr.. Francis and Elizabeth had one son named John Abraham Friend 1853-1923 raised by the Smiths in Preston County, married Margaret Albright 1856-1917 of the Albrights of Albright in WV. John and Margaret were my great grandparents. The second marriage of Francis Albanus Friend was to Mary Ann Friend 1839-___Daughter of William Edmundson and Susannah Nusz. They had one Daughter, Emma Susan Friend 1861-1956. Mary Ann married a William Schlagel and a George Vagdon and as a widow was denied a request for pension from Francis Albanus as she married more than once. Emma Susan married Richard Benton White 1838 -1892. Their issue was Sidney Ray White 1883 who is said to have written well documented information on the Friend Family and provided information for the book INDIAN BLOOD by Evelyn Guard Olsen. Emma Susan second marriage was with William Thomas Wilson 1859-1930 they had no issue and both are buried in the Steele Cemetery at Friendsville. Emma Susan lived on a small portion of the Gabriel Friend land near Bear Creek. I remember her and her home well. Emma Susan provided the information of the death of Elizabeth Hartman Smith to Evelyn Guard Olsen for her book and Mrs. Olsen forwarded the information to me along with some of her correspondence with of Sidney Ray White. Sidney Ray White married Ula Lee Terrell and had one son. I would share other information upon request. Dot Jones wvdot@earthlink.net

Delores, Art is having problems sending email to the List and ask that I forward this. Pat-T --- Dolores, I was in the Cornerstone Genealogy Society in Waynesburg, PA where there is a decent WV aisle and happened upon a Summer 1954 issue of "Tableland Trails" from the Tableland Trails Foundation. Hi again fellow FRIEND trackers, This is a looooooooooong shot, but has anyone looked into Elizabeth Hartman & Francis Albanus Friend (s/o Sophia Kemp & John Simpson Friend) as possible parents for this Rebecca Jane (Friend) Tuhill? First though, Pat T. wrote me earlier: (quote) "...Henry had at least 2 wives, an early one being shown as Lizzie Shaffer on a death cert of Charles H. Shaffer who was about 3 or 4 years younger than Rebecca..." so I'm assuming it was a type error when she later wrote: "...There is a four year gap between Rebecca and the next child in the family (Charles Haskill)..." What say you Pat T.? ===================== O.K., let's review what we have: (1) Rebecca's mother was probably Lizzie (maiden name?) SHAFFER; Henry Haskell's 1st wife.. (2) SHAFFER was probably Lizzie's marital name at the time she married Henry Haskell as she had a son Charles H. SHAFFER. (3) Charles H.SHAFFER was about 4 years younger than Rebecca. (4) Rebecca was born about 1862, thus her half-brother Charles was probably b: about 1866. (5) Lizzie must have then married husband SHAFFER between 1863 & 1866.....after Rebecca's birth and before Charles' birth. (6) Rebecca was referred to as "Miss Rebecca J.Friend" in her husband's obit, so FRIEND was probably her maiden name. (7) Assuming her mother Lizzie was married to her father, Rebecca's father's surname was probably FRIEND. (8) If Lizzie was married to a FRIEND, he (barring a divorce) died between 1862 and 1865...after Rebecca's conception but before Lizzie's marriage to 2nd husband SHAFFER and son Charles' conception. (9) "Lizzie" is often a nickname for Elizabeth, so mother Lizzie may well have been an Elizabeth. ==================== IF all of the above holds true we're looking for a FRIEND male who: (a) died between 1862 and 1865, and who (b) was married to an "Elizabeth" or "Lizzie", she being young enough to have children in the 1860s, and who (c) lived in Garrett Co. MD ==================== The only couple I have in my FRIEND files that seems to fit this "profile" right now is: Elizabeth Hartman & Francis Albanus Friend (s/o Sophia Kemp & John Simpson Friend of Garrett Co. MD) I only have them listed with one known child at this point: John Abram (or Abraham) Friend, b: abt. 1853, so there could have been other children. Francis Albanus Friend died Dec.1862 in Annapolis, MD while serving in the Third Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Infantry during the Civil War. Do we have any more on the Francis Albanus Friend family that might help include or rule them out as possibilities for this Rebecca's family? What are the vitals on wife Elizabeth Hartman? Has anyone come across the Francis Albanus Friend's household in the 1860 census? Are there other children listed for them besides John? I don't have a death date for son John or marital info...so? Rebecca, being b: 1862, wouldn't be in the 1860 census of course, but if she had other older sibs, they would be. What about the 1870 census? Where is Elizabeth (Hartman) Friend in 1870? What about the Henry Haskell family in the 1870 census? If Rebecca had older sibs they would probably have been married or out on their own by 1880, but they would have been at home in 1870. But who's home? How is Francis Albanus Friend's wife Elizabeth listed in the 1860 census...as Elizabeth or Lizzie? Do we have any other FRIEND families that fit this profile? Hmmm? Just throwing out some ideas...........
