I have Isaac Allen Paugh married to Nancy Boyer as a son of James Edward Paugh and Isabel Enlow; rather than the son of Betsy McRobie. Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County (432-433) says Betsy McRobie had a son Isaac, but I don't believe he was Isaac Allen Paugh. In fact, two census records (below) indicate his name was "Isaiah", rather than Isaac. I think all of the census records below refer to Betsy. -Sam 1850 Federal census, Maryland, Allegany County, Glades District, page 45a or 89, SK Image 45a, taken Aug. 12, 1850- 608/ 611 Household of Nelson, age 33; and Sarah Baker age 32- "Elisabeth McRobie", WF age 23 (1827), born in MD. "Ellen" (McRobie), WF age 3 (1847), born in MD. They were living beside Joseph Dewitt, son of John Dewitt. .............. 1860 census, Maryland, Allegany County, page 325 or 681, SK Image 681. *MAY* be the Pleasant Valley area south of Oakland. All born in MD. None are shown to have attended school. 2362/2295 "Philip Pough", WM age 60 (1800), Laborer, No Real Estate, $75 Personal. "Elizabeth", WF age 35 (1825). "Ellen", WF age 12 (1848). "Isaiah", WM age 8 (1852). "Clarissa", WF age 4 (1856). "Jonathan H.", WM age 2 (1858). Neighbors- William and Druscilla (Harvey) Lower; Thompson, Henry, & Nathan Lower; Joseph, John G. & Isaac King; John Frey, Samuel McGiffin; PHILIP POUGH; Nelson Murphy; Mary Moore, Theophilus Wilt, Johnson White. ............... 1870 Federal census, Election District 10, Oakland Post Office, Page 5, SK Image 291A, taken Aug. 30, 1870, the area of Bethlehem Church. All born in MD. All family members are shown unable to read. 27/ 27 "Paugh, Phillip", WM age appears to be "41" (1829), Farmer, no Real Estate, $700 Personal Estate. "Elizabeth", WF age 38 (1832), Keeps House. "Isaiah", WM age 19 (1851), Farm Work. "Jane", WF age 15 (1855), Domestic Work, attended school. "Jonathan", WM age 12 (1858), Farm Work, attended school. "David", WM age 5 (1865). "Daniel W.", WM age 2 (1868). "Ellen" may have been married by 1870, since she doesn't appear. Enumerated just before Elisha Harvey, son of Nathaniel Harvey. This places them in the area of Bethlehem Church. ................. 1880 Federal census, Maryland, Garrett County, Ryan's Glade, District 100, page 8, SK Image 100-08, taken June 18, 1880. Dwelling 53, Family 69 "Paugh, Elizabeth H.", WF age 52 (1828), Widow, Keeping House, unable to write, born in MD, Father born in MD, Mother born in VA. "Jonathan", WM age 22 (1858), Son, Married, Farmer, born in MD, Father born in MD, Mother born in VA (NOTE: above, Elizabeth is shown to have been born in MD). "Rebecca", WF age 19 (1861), "Daughter Law", Married, At Home, born in MD, Father born in MD, Mother b. VA. For some reason a separate Family Visit "70" was entered on the next line, but the Dwelling number remained the same; 53. "David D." (Paugh), WM age 14 (1866), Son, Single, At Home, born in MD, Father born in MD, Mother born in VA. So from this census record it's not clear whether Elizabeth was born in MD or Virginia. The family was enumerated between Benjamin and Isaac Moon, placing them on Bethlehem Church Road just north of the intersection of Combination Road. -SJB Aug., 2003. .............. *Did Betsy McRobie have Ellen Paugh and Isaiah (Isaac?) before she married Philip H. Paugh? Was her maiden name McRobie; or had she been married to a McRobie? No clue. ...............
I found among my papers an original baptismal certificate for an Ackerman born 1885 in Somerset County, Northampton township. As it is not part of my family tree I would like to pass it along to an Ackerman descendent . If you have ties to the individual please let me know. Marilyn
Here's some additional information on the tour. The bus will pick us all up at the Casselman Motor Inn which is located behind the historic Casselman Restaurant in Grantsville and the dinner buffet will be at the Casselman after the tour. Pat, thanks for letting me know that I left out this info. Regards, Lois
Hi all, I will be in Garrett County Sept 15-20th. I've made arrangements for a small bus to take us around to some of our ancesteral haunts on Thurs, Sept 18. The bus holds 47 people at a cost of $470. We will have the bus from 9-5 on the 18th. I mailed in the deposit. It is refundable with cancellation by Sept 2nd if there isn't enough interest. If we fill all the seats, the cost will be $10/person. I'm not sure of the cost of the dinner buffet but we will check on that and get the information back to those who ae interested. If any of you are interested in joining us and/or know where any of the places are below that are marked with the (?), please let me know by emailing me directly. I won't need payment until after August 18th and will email more information about costs, etc., at that time. I have about 10-12 cousins that are interested/able to accompany us at this time. So far, we have some descendants of the Hetrick/Buckle/Brenneman families, Slabaughs/Hetricks, some Beeghley/Stark/Custer/Merrills, Livingood/Glotfelty/Durst and maybe a Knox, Buckle, Bowser, Broadwater, and Beitzel. I'm hoping to meet with my Hetrick/Brenneman cousins early in the week of my arrival to map out the tour. Bob Brenneman is the only one I know that seems to know everyone in the area and most of the history about the ancestors and where they lived. Some areas we are planning to visit are as follows: Areas where our ancestors lived in Garrett County: Maynardier Ridge Rd/Bittinger Cemetery, Legeer Rd/Rock Lodge Rd, Dung Hill Rd, Rabbit Hollow Rd, Collier Rd/Bear Creek Burial Ground (now the Bender Farm). The Bender home is thought to be the original Jonas Mosser homestead. Places to visit depending on time and knowledge of people on tour to help us find them. A lot of these will be drive-by views where we will stay on the bus. Some participants want to get off the bus to take pictures or to browse around. I figure we could probably have 15 short stops. One stop for lunch for those who didn't pack one and the Springs Museum will probably be the longest stops: Stanton's Mill, the George Bittinger estate/later was the Augustus "Gus" and Mary Bittinger Snyder home farm, location of a Snyder family haunted property, location of the original Legeer/Bittinger School (near Tom Bowser's place). Other than Stanton's Mill, these three places are in the same vicinity. Jennings may be another place on the tour. More of a challenge will be to locate where the Beeghleys, (Balthaser) Diehl, and Hetricks lived as neighbors in 1850-1870 (?) in or near the Cove, in rural Accident, and the Flowery Vale area. Would also like to visit any Brethren Churches (?) in the areas (if we can find them). More places to see would be the maple syrup collection farms (?) Melchoir Miller's distillery, Winding Ridge (Lenhart Tavern (?) if it still exits, Petersburg Tollhouse at Addison, Casper Durst's grave in East Salisbury (Elk Lick), Martin and Dianna Mosser/Musser homestead (now the Gun Club in PA?) and the location of the Hetrick reunion place (?). While we're in the area, we might even find the Lininger Distillery(?). A lot will depend if any one knows where these places are located and time available. Probably the last part of the tour will be a visit to the Springs Museum (we may have to call ahead on this) where the Peter Livingood's (our 5th g-grandfather) wagons are on display. I'm sure there are a lot of interesting things there to interest everyone on the tour. Then return to the Cassleman by way of the Avilton/Lanaconing area (please let me know of specific things we might see there) . . . and a last stop at the Old Stone House in Little Meadows where Washington's/Braddock's troops camped. Again, the time spent on this leg of the trip will depend on time left. We will also need to know how many will be joining us for the dinner buffet after the tour so we can notify the restaurant well in advance. I don't know the cost of the dinner buffet, but from what I remember, it was very inexpensive. I plan to make name tags for the people joining us and will need phone numbers where I can reach any of you who plan to participate so I can get back to you timely with information. Some don't read their email daily :-) I still have a few cousins who don't have computers or email to invite them along. You may have the same situation. Regards, Lois Hetrick Stewart

Hi Peggy, A REGISTRATION of death for a stillborn is usually required in the case of a pregnancy as advanced as this one obviously was (where the stillborn's twin survived). Whether or not the stillborn's birth was also registered depends on what may have been the practice of the day in that particular county. My grandfather has a stillborn nephew, b/d 1907. I found a death registration for the baby but not a birth registration. On the other hand, in the same era but in a different state, I found both a birth & death registration for one stillborn. BTW....birth, marriage & death CERTIFICATES are not kept on file in county or state record offices, only the REGISTRATION records are kept on file. Certificates are documents that the offices produce on request for a fee. Some offices still transcribe information from the REGISTRATION entries onto a form while some simply photocopy the original registration record now. In either case the clerk then applies an embossed seal to the document which "certifies" the information to be either a true transcript or actual photocopy of that event's registration record... thus the document's name: CERTIFICATE. Since it's unlikely you would have any legal need for a death CERTIFICATE for your husband's stillborn twin, I would see if you could just order an uncertified photocopy of the death registration instead. Stan McRobie has a picture from Aunt Betty's Photo Album. Can you identify the location? Aunt Betty is Betty Joan McRobie, dau of Carrol Francis McRobie - or Mrs Niles N Madigan. It may be from WV or MD - or maybe an off-beat vacation picture. The building in the picture looks like a castle turret. It also looks like the silos that are so common in the midwest - except this is only about 2 stories high, and is made of stone. There are two young people in it, a boy who may be about 14, and he is about 1/4 the height to the top of the ramparts, and it is standing in a grove of trees. It appears that the diameter of the building could be about the same as the height, as it is nearly equal in proportions. There is a girl, maybe aged 10 standing next to the boy. Does this ring a bell? Please contact me to see it.

April 4, 1907 - The Republican Mrs. Lucinda F. Broadwater Again we are called upon to record the departure from this vain world to that of eternal bliss the soul of a true wife, a friend, and neighbor, Mrs. Lucinda F. Broadwater, wife of Franklin Broadwater, who died at her home at Fairview, this county, March 29, 1907, aged twenty seven years, nine months, and nineteen days, the cause of the death being pnuemonia. During her illness, not quite two weeks, she received every care and attention that a loving husband and loving hands could do for the one who was to be taken away from them by a higher power, that doeth all things for the best. Her kind disposition and pleasant words should be treasured up as priceless gems on which our minds will love to dwell in the most sacred recollections. She has left behind a loving husband and five little children, a babe only five weeks old to mourn her sad taking away. The deceased was a member of the Reform church since she was fifteen. She always tried to lead a christian life and do as near right as she could. The funeral services were solemnized by Rev. John Green of the Baptist church, Rev. McCoy assisting and the remains were interred in the Weitzell cemetery at Fairview, on Easter Sunday, being followed by a large concourse of friends and acquaintances who paid their last sad token of respect to her memory. The sumpathy of the entire community goes out to the family in their sad bereavement. (daughter of James N. Ross and Mary Catherine Stark Ross) January 7, 1926 - The Republican Perry Broadwater Perry Broadwater, who has been ill for three weeks with pnuemonia, died Tuesday night, December 29, at the National Hotel, Grantsville. He is survived by his two sons, Oscar W. and Howard R. of Shirley, Ind., and daughter, Mrs. Wesley Bowers, of near Grantsville, also nine grandchildren, and brothers Stephen, William, Peter, and Albert Broadwater, of Avilton; Waldo of Moscow; John, of Midland; and Mrs. Jane Coleman, of Frostburg. He was the oldest of the family and was a grandson of the late Amos Broadwater. The funeral was held Thursday at Avilton, from the Cherry Grove Dunkard church, Rev. Ed Walls officiating.
July 14, 1938 - The Republican Mrs. Richard Ream Death came Sunday to Mrs. Richard Ream, of Loch Lynn Heights, following a paralytic stroke at her home last Thursday morning. Ream, of Loch Lynn; Charles W. Ream, Crellin, president of the Garrett National Bank in Oakland and the Stanley Coal Company; George Ream of Indiana, Pa.; and James R. Ream of Oakland. Two daughters also survive: Mrs. Anna M. Biggs, Loch Lynn; Mrs. Emma Gortner, Mazon, Ill.; and two sisters, Mrs. Anna R. Robinson, Cumberland; Mrs. Ida M. Glotfelty, McHenry. Funeral Services were held Tuesday afternoon in the United Brethren Church, Loch Lynn, with the Rev. Crites officiating assisted by Rev. Johnson. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. January 1, 1939 Mrs. John Ritchie Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Ritchie, wife of John Ritchie, Accident, were held this morning at 10 o'clock from Bolden's Funeral Home, Oakland, and the remains later taken to Eglon, W. Va., in charge of the Church of the Brethren minister. Interment was in the Maple Spring cemetery. Mrs. Ritchie died in the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, where she had been a patient but a few days. Ross; two sisters, Hattie Graham of Piqua, Ohio, and Mrs. Edith Margaret Junkins of Kitzmiller, Interment was made in the Oakland Cemetery. March 10, 1938 - The Republican Katherine R. Rasche Funeral services for Mrs. Katherine R. Rasche were held Monday morning from St. Peter's Catholic Church of which she was a member for many years. She died Saturday afternoon after being practically bedfast for about twelve years. She was age 86 years.
