Sam, I have some info about Phoebe you mention below - give me some time on the other members of John Murphy's household. Phobe A is not 3 years old, it is written wrong. She must be 23. Phoebe Ann O'Haver is the wife of John Murphy. They had 10 children, the first of which appears here, below Phobe, Mary E. John Murphy b 6 Sep 1826 Phoebe Ann O'Haver b 5 Sep 1836 children: Mary Eveline b 23 Dec 1858 Thomas Riley Murphy b 18 Jun 1861 Harriet Victory b 7 Feb 1864 Frances May b 24 May 1866 Elinor Blanche b 2 Jan 1869 Henry Pool b 19 Jul 1871 Elizabeth Jane or Lizzie 18 Sep 1873 Florence b 28 Feb 1876 John Feymore b 11 Feb 1876 Gracie b 4 May 1881 The 1870 census for Mineral Co WV, New Creek PO, Elk Township, (10 years after the 1860 you sent in Hampshire Co VA) shows: Line 4 Dwelling 11 Family 10 Murphy, John age 44 , Phebe A age 32 , Mary E age 10 , Thos R age 9 , Harriett V age 6 , Frances M age 4 , Elinor age 1 I have to look oer the Janes S Paugh thing. I struggled with that one for many years. She is the widow of John J McCroby, and had four children Daniel FLora or Florinda, James B and Foster B. She was widowed by John, and married 5 Mar 1924 Fransis M McCrobie. I believe it was in her pension papers, but I later changed her name from Paugh to Wright, and the name is Susan Jane, or Jane S - you will see it both ways. I will have to study that one later and get back to you woth more references Let me just tease you with this: Francis M is the son of John W McCrobie, who is married to Margaret Murphy. His first wife was Huldah Frances Murphy. I need a break! --------Original Message-------- This might be of interest- 1850 Allegany County census, Glades District 10 (?), (no page #), SK Image 57b, taken Aug. 20, 749/ 743 All but Martha and Hugh were born in Virginia; they were born in MD. Hi Walt: Sorry, I wasn't any help. "Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County", page 434; 'Children of Michael Paugh'- Joseph H., William H. (b. June 3, 1818, m. Matilda Harvey), Lewis F., Thomas D., Simon, Catharine, (m. Andrew Sollars), Malinda, (m. Neil Kite)........" The Paugh family history has Joseph H. Paugh married to Malinda Kite, but shows no supporting marriage record. I have Joseph H. Paugh (son of Michael, Jr.; nothing to indicate his middle name was "Henan", other than the fact that he had a son "John Henan" in the 1860 census); married to "Malinda" (unknown). If Hoye was right, Joseph H. Paugh no doubt married a cousin. Gee - thanks Sam for the help - AGAIN! I need to look over that Henry... I have seen him before. Thanks for reminding me about him. I have to look into this one... a Paugh and a McCrobie... I need a little time to go over this one again. -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 08:08:21 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Sam - Census records - Indexes Hi Bonnie: Most census haven't been indexed, I don't think. Those that have been often contain errors that can cause you to miss an individual you're looking for. The handwriting varies from excellent to unreadable. Names are sometimes misinterpreted or incorrect, etc. I have S-K's disks from 1850-1900 and use them. I also use Ancestry.com's Images Online. Their images are slow to download and again, most years are not indexed. Even worse, many years are not even separated by locality. All the towns and townships in Hampshire County, VA are lumped together under "Unknown Townships" in 1860, for instance. So It's slow going. This might be of interest- 1850 Allegany County census, Glades District 10 (?), (no page #), SK Image 57b, taken Aug. 20, 749/ 743 All but Martha and Hugh were born in Virginia; they were born in MD. Hi Sam, This is truly a bucket of worms. ; ) The Poorbaugh info is likely info that they picked up from a post (by me) on the i-net. Inadvertantly, I supplied their writers with more info on "my" Daniel Switzer and my Switzer family was taken as a connection to theirs and added to their tree in the book. <sigh> I don't know what info they had prior to my lst post. They would not correspond with me after I politely questioned the connection. Right now I don't have conclusive evidence that my Daniel belongs in their tree. The passage quoted, below, has errors. It is evidentally my Daniel & Isabella, but, they married and lived in Md. for a time (src. census) and Daniel was a "drover" (src. census). They moved to Tunnelton later and he is listed as "teamster" in that census. Eventually they settled in Eglon, Pres. Co., WV, and Daniel owned quite a bit of land (enough to give 3 or 4 of their children farms) and Daniel was also a logger. Isabella was a Custer (of David & Margaret (Stark) Custer. And, yes, they did have a son named Daniel Morrell Switzer who lived in Eglon. The "b. Allegheny Twp." is news to me. The most I have is "Pa." from the census----I suspect it was Somerset Co., but have no proof. A Rizer Switzer was living with or next door to Daniel & Isabella in the early census and Rizer was b. Hello Carolyn: I have Levi Sweitzer married to "Jane" in the 1860 census, who I presume to be Mary Jane Bittinger. I have Levi's parents as Jacob Sweitzer, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Burbach. This information comes from the Poorbaugh (Burbach & other variations) family history: "...Jacob SWEITZER b. 04/18/1779 probably in Brothers Valley Twp., Bedford Co., now Somerset Co., Pa., d. 1856, son of Jacob and Barbara SWEITZER (Footnote 5- Laurel Messenger, published by Somerset Co. Genealogical and Historical Society. (The issue that information appeared in isn't given.) "They both worshipped at Mull's German Reformed Church where Jacob, her husband, at age 20 was confirmed on 04/21/1799." Levi Sweitzer. had a brother Daniel. Poorbaugh" gives his date of birth Oct. 20, 1824. Their oldest brother, According to "Poorbaugh", page 80, was George Sweitzer. On page 81, 3.10 George Sweitzer, 2. 2, 1,, was a farmer in Alleghany & Southampton townships, Somerset Co., Pa. until sometime in the 1860's as he wasn't in the 1870 census for this county, or in the Allegany Co., Md. (census). He may have moved west or into West Virginia." Same page are his children including 4.51 "Daniel James", b. ca 1836. For him it says: "Married a Maryland girl and farmed there into the 1870's, then may have moved into West Virginia where son Daniel was living when he married." "b. ca 1836 in Allegheny Twp., Somerset Co.,, Pa., m. ca 1857 to Isabella (?), b. ca 1838 in Md." Does that sound like your Daniel? He had a son Daniel Morrell who lived in Eglon, W. V., according to "Poorbaugh". Sam SHUPE@citcom.net wrote: > Sam, > Do you have anything further on the Switzer name? ---Levi's father??? > etc.?? Hi Bonnie: Most census haven't been indexed, I don't think. ("John McRobie", HH) "Henry", WM age 5 (1845). .................... In 1860 "Henry McCroby" was age 15 (1845) in the Hartmansville area of Hampshire County, Virginia. Page 201; Ancestry.com Image 205. Also "Jane S. Paugh", WF , age 7 (1853). Both are shown born in Virginia. >From the prior page, "John Murphy", WM age 36 (1824) "Phoebe A.", WF age 3 (1857; "Mary E.", WF age 2 (1858), all born in VA. So it appears Henry McCroby and Jane S. Paugh were living in the John Murphy household. -SJB Aug., 2003 ...................... I have Henry as the son of John W. McRobie. Regarding "Jane S. Paugh"; b. 1853- I have Jane S. Paugh married to John J. "McRoby" in the 1900 census born Feb. 1858. Although there's 5 years difference in Jane's age and she shows born in VA in 1860 and born in MD in 1900; I suspect both records may refer to the same person. Hi Walt, long time, no write! I was at a party in Pittsburgh recently and talking to this person about Deep Creek Lake. She mentioned that her family also had ties to Garrett County and that someone in her family is a genealogist. I asked if she knew your name, and she said no but would love to make a connection. So I'll get in touch with her today. Best wishes Beverly
Sam, Thanks for your help. My own research in the Paugh family, which is quite limited, revealed only one Sarah Paugh of approximately the right age in western Maryland households in the 1850 census. She was listed in the household of Joseph H. Paugh and Malinda. Don Kifer kindly reported that the "H." in Joseph H. Paugh stood for Henan and that Malinda's maiden name was Kight. Interestingly, the household of Joseph H. Paugh also included a young girl who fits the general description of the person (Mary Jane Paugh or Mary Ann Paugh) whom Pat Hook is looking for. It would be wonderful if Joseph H. Paugh left an estate record, or deed, or Bible, or anything that mentioned his children so that we would have corroboration that we have sorted out this family correctly. Does anyone know of such a record? The husband of my Sarah Catherine Paugh, Joseph William Warnick, was a different person than Elbow Joe Warnick to whom you referred. My Joseph William Warnick lived on Backbone Mountain on the side sloping to the Potomac River west of Bloomington. Elbow Joe Warnick lived on Big Savage Mountain on property owned today by one of his descendants. Walt Warnick ------------------------ Samuel J. Janie, I regret that the second edition of my Warnick book, which was published in 1995, is out of print. Someday, I hope to issue a third edition. Thanks to the internet, I have been contacted by a number of long lost cousins from around the country who have furnished a great deal of information about lost branches of the western Maryland Warnick family tree. I will contact you privately about descendants of William T. Warnick and Iva Paugh. Walt Warnick -------------------------- Janie Shepherd wrote: >Good morning Walt, > >Thank you! Beverly, Yes, please ask the Warnick family living in Washington, PA, about their western Maryland ties. Even if they are not part of the Joseph Warnick branch, it is likely that we will be able to place them on the western Maryland Warnick family tree.
