If so, where do we get it and what is the cost? By the way, all of Simon P. Wright's children from both his first and second marriages are now deceased except his youngest son S. Russell and his youngest daughter Esta. These two are descended from Lovilla Sypolt and Henry Hartman. I was in the Oakland courthouse the other day and decided to try to track down (George) Wesley Messenger there, to see if he had gone over the state line to marry for the second time. At that time I had not found any record of his second marriage, or even of a divorce from Joanna Belle Garner. This was a puzzle, as in your book of tombstone readings of the Terra Alta cemetery you listed a child, Frances, buried w/ Wesley. The child was born long after Belle and Wesley separated, so he had another woman, married or not. (By the way, there is no death date for Wesley on the stone, although I assume /Wesley means with Wesley.) I found the records of both the marriage application and the marriage return by the minister for a second marriage for Wesley. On the application is the statement that Decree of Divorce was produced by Wesley. This was in November of 1912. He was 51 and his bride, Sarah Myrtle Osborne from near Bridgeport, was 27 and previously unmarried. The marriage took place in Oakland on Nov. 29, 1912. It was not filed and recorded until Jan.31, 1913. The child was born Sept. 6, 1913 and d. Feb. 13, 1921. I can find no tombstone reading for Sarah Myrtle in this volume (#2). 2. Hi Art, It sounds to me that you have an updated version of what I have. The version I have was loaned to me by another researcher so I could duplicate it. She told me my family was mentioned and that there were many other names I would recognize and she was so right. Your book is so recent. I wonder what new information is in it? Do you know if it is still available? I have ancestors from St. Peter's Oakland and also St. Peter's Westernport. Very confusing! Lois Z.

    3. Hi LoisZ, I have my copy of the book out and I guess I was a little fast and loose about the title I used in my message yesterday. The book doesn't have the full format title page that gives all the information, so I will just tell some more details: The cover uses what is probably the title - "Upon This Rock..." Then and Now - A Pictorial History, St. Peter the Apostle Church, Oakland, Maryland - 1852 - 2002. The back side of the cover says: This photographic journal is the gift of the Catholic Daughters of America Court of Oakland No. 2209 on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of St. Peter the Apostle Church - 1852-2002. I don't know anything about the current availability of the very nice 60 page booklet, but there is a small gift shop in the basement of the church, and I got my copy as a result of talking to a nice lady about all my relatives who were early members between 1850s and buried in Oakland from St. Peters long after moving out of town. I will watch the messages for any questions I can treat as lookups as I don't know how available the book is. I appreciate everyone who is helping with my family questions! 3. (I sent this information to MDALLEGA list but perhaps some of you do not subscribe to that. I have been to Shaffer Cemetery. Friends of ours live near the Oakland town limits on Herrington Manor Road (W. Liberty Street) near Leighton Drive. We walked up the hill behind their house (west) a half mile or less to Shaffer Cemetery. Several stones existed with only three initials on them. The placements looked as if some could have been children. I didn't see any initials that looked familiar and didn't take notes. 3. Hello Walt, Pat Hook, & anyone else interested. I found some entries in the 1870 census I thought might be of interest. Henry Paugh (parents unknown) was living near Joseph W. Warnick who is supposed to be married to Sarah C. Paugh. I don't know what connection there might have been between Henry Paugh and Sarah C. (Paugh) Warnick. 1870 Federal census, Allegany County, MD, Election District #4, page #11 or 62a, Westernport P. O., SK Image 62a taken Aug. 3, 1870. Avy "Hannah" Paugh is supposed to have been the daughter of Henry Thomas Kight and Sarah Sharpless. Sarah Sharpless is supposed to have been born in 1788. The fact that "Sarah" in the record above is listed as "Paugh" may be misleading. It could have been a mistake on the part of the census taker. If her married name WAS Paugh, that might point to her being Sarah Davis, wife of Michael Paugh, Jr.. HOWEVER, nothing seems to indicate Michael Paugh had a son Henry. 1. [MDGARRET] St. Peter's Cath. Church book
    2. There has been mention of St. Peter's Catholic Church-150 years. I have the "Growth of St. Peter Parish Oakland, Garrett County, Maryland" by Robert Browning Garrett, published in 1978? When was the "150" year book published? Where can it be purchased? LoisZ

    3. Art I have been to this location. Friends of ours live near the town limits on Herrington Manor Road (W. Liberty Street) near Leighton Drive. We walked up the hill behind their house (west) a half mile or less to Shaffer Cemetery. Several stones existed with only three initials on each stone. The placements looked as if some could have been children. I didn't see any initials that looked familiar and didn't take notes. Earrlier while going through an old Republican Newspaper film, I had found the obit of my great grandfacher (Thos. Coddington) The obit stated that he was buried in the "Shaffer Cemetery" and I was confused because his stone is located in the Oakland Cemetery. Much later, I discovered where Shaffer Cemetery is(was) located. There is an interesting story about "the moving of the cemetery." Seems a ceremony was held at the Shaffer Cemetery. The group then walked to the Oakland Cemetery where another ceremony was held. Thus moved the spirits where moved. I found it all very fascinating. 1. [MDGARRET] Warnick/Washington PA
    2. Hi - I too am interested in the Warnicks of Washington, PA. I am seeking more info on Andrew Warnick or Jackson Warnick who died in Cumberland at the military hospital during the Civil War. Walt and I have discussed this individual previously, but made no connection. Thanks for any info. Carol K. 1. Re: [MDGARRET] Switzer
    2. Samuel J. Bowser
    3. Hello Carolyn: Yes, that is from the book written in 1976. "Poorbaugh" page 80 tells of those who contributed information as to BURBACH, SWEITZER, and BOWSER descendants. On the BURBACH side; Jacob C. POOR- BAUGH 5.507 and Charles PURBAUGH 4.162; the compiler, Treva CALDER; Mary (BOWSER) THORNBURG; and Bernadine (DEVINE) FRIEND. Not sure what you mean regarding a "source" for the book. It was published by the Poorbaugh-Purbaugh Association of Somerset County in 1976; with the annotation: "Any part of this book may be copied by family researchers and genealogists if the source is given due recognition." I don't know if the book is available through inter library loan; I don't see any ISBN # in the original; the supplement has ISBN: 0-9621708-0-1; Library of Congress Card # 88-83499. If by "source" you mean sources referring to in- dividuals, the bottom of each page contains footnotes (which I _hate) referencing sources for data on that page. What makes it particularly nasty, is that the footnotes reference a source page in the back of the book, i.e. the foot note may reference "129" in the back of the book; so you have to go to the back of the book to see what "129" refers to (cemetery, census, contributor, etc.) which makes it a real pain. If you want what the book has regarding the Sweitzers, the easiest way would be for me to photocopy and send it to you snail mail. I can understand your frustration with trying to get them to notice that you wished to contribute your material. I volunteered to donate what I had on the Bowsers about three years ago and didn't get any kind of a satisfactory reply either. One thing's for sure; it's a mighty big job they're working on. http://www.poorbaughfamily.org/default.htm Check out the website. The original book (1976) is 539 pages, the 1988 supplement is 114 pages. They are trying to put an update on cd rom. This has been a work in progress for about 3 years now, I think. If George Sweitzer is an ancestor of yours, then we are cousins, of some description. I descend from his sister Elizabeth, b. 1809 who married Jacob Bowser, b. 1802. They are buried at the German Lutheran cemetery at Cove.
