Sam, Silas Fitzwater is my gt,gt,gt, grandfather. I am trying to find the parentage of James Hezekiah Fitzwater, father of Silas. Family history said that James Hezekiah Fitzwater traveled from Hampshire Co., Va. with two sisters and that they married two bothers or cousins by the name of Junkins. I am looking for any family names that may lead me to the parentage of James. I think that RuthFitzwater was a sister of James H. Fitzwater. Les ----- Original Message ----- From: "Samuel J. Hello Mary Jane: Your g-grandparents must have been John Lower Fitzwater, son of Silas Fitzwater? This is what information I have on him- 1850 Federal census, Maryland, Allegany County, Glades District, page 91 or 46a, (SK Image 46a) taken Aug. 12, 1850 617/ 620 Two doors from Nelson Fitzwaters. All but Silas Fitzwaters born in MD. School age children attended school. ("Silas Fitzwaters", HH) "John", WM age 10 (1840), attended school. ............. 1870 census, Allegany County, MD, Election Dist. 1, Altamont P. O., taken July 22, 1870, Pages 2B & 3A, SK Images 2B & 3A, 31/ 31 None in the family able to read or write. All but Silas born in MD; School age children all attended school. ("Fittswater, Silas", HH) "John", WM age 30 (1840), Farm Laborer, born in MD. .............. "Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County", compiled by Garrett County Historical Society, 1988; page 229-230: "THE FITZWATER FAMILY" "Children of Silas and Martha Lower Fitzwater" (3) John Lower, b. March 10, 1840, d. April, 1914, m. Hepzilah George. ................ Silas Fitzwater's tombstone indicates he was born 1806, but the 1850 & 1870 census indicate he was born 1810-1811. Regarding Ruth Fitzwater who married John W. Junkins- Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County says Hezekiah James Fitzwater was born in Dec., 1784. We have no year of birth for Ruth Fitzwater, but her husband John w. Junkins was reportedly born in Ireland in 1780. Ruth apparently died young, because in 1816 John Junkins married Elizabeth Anderson. So Ruth and Hezekiah James Fitzwater would have been near enough the same ages to have been brother & sister, but no records have been found that would indicate they were. Census records are no help, because before 1850, only heads of households were named. Found this mention of Rev. E. Manges. Read more at this URL. Christ's (Casebeer) Lutheran church was organized in 1844 by Rev. Peter Rizer, with the following officers: Philip Maurer and Jacob Baker, elders; John Casebeer and Samuel Miller, deacons. John Casebeer, then living on the Somerset and Johnstown turnpike, five miles north of Somerset, donated the land upon which to build the church, which was completed November 30, 1845. Rev. Rizer remained until 1847 and was succeeded by Rev. William Uhl, who served until 1851. Since which time the following have served as pastors: Rev. A. Babb, 1851-57; Rev. C. Witmer, 1857-60; Rev. G. M. Pile, 1860-61; Rev. L. Gerhart, 1861-66; Rev. J. F. Shearer,, 1882-90; Rev. E. Manges, 1890-93; Rev. C. F. Gephart, 1893-97; Rev. D. Stuart Hoover, 1897-1902; Rev. Robert L. Patterson, 1902. The church now numbers about 300 and the Sunday school has a membership of 240. The old church gave way to 1903 to a modern edifice, built of brick, which is amply large for the ever increasing congregation. http://www.rootsweb.com/~pasomers/hbs/chapter25.htm

Hello, fellow listers! I have found that my grandparents were married in Oakland, Garrett County. They were both from Weston, Lewis County, WV. I've also learned that it was a common practice for many couples to travel to Oakland to marry. I feel sure my grandparents took the train up from Weston to Oakland, walked over to the courthouse and applied for their marriage license. I know that they married in Oakland but here's my question. In 1905, when my grandparents married in Oakland, would couples have gotten married right at the courthouse or was there a church couples usually went to in Oakland where a minister would have performed the ceremony?? I have a copy of thier marriage certificate and marriage license and on the one of them it states that E. Manges, Minister, performed the ceremony recorded the marriage. Is there anyone who knows who Rev. E. Manges was or what church he was affiliated with??? Thanks for any help you can provide! Claudia Pell-Salvatore

His bother Isaac Fitzwater, my gt grandfather moved to Rocky Bar, Idaho in 1881 and Henry followed. I have seen a picture of Goldie and Henry from the west and they had a young girl with them. Pat, I hope you are getting THIS message. My last message was returned for numerous reasons, the most operative of them being : administrative prohibition (host blacklisted). I think I will hold on to this long obit I sent Carol until some peace comes to the Internet. With the virus's and worms around I'll just wait awhile. Thanks for your help. Lois Z
I just received a "wrong address" notice after I had sent an obit to the address for Carol Hepburn, administrator. Please tell me what I did wrong. This is what I entered: <<chepburn@cox.net>>. Thanks, LoisZ
Thanks for help in getting "ON" to the directory page of the Garrett County obits. It's all in knowing HOW...and now I do. LoisZ.
Kathleen You're right. Thanks Shirley
