Hi everyone! I have recently started my family tree and I am looking for more info. Perhaps someone here can fill in some gaps or provide more info. Also I am plan to be in the Westernport area this Nov. and I would love to hook up with someone that could show me around the courthouses and other places that might help me out. My grandparents are Ervin & Leona (Buskirk) Grove. My grandfathers parents were Dennis Elias Grove and Mary Green? I am not quite sure of Mary's maiden name but this is what I got after talking to relatives. This is all I have down the Groves line. This Grove line lived off of Arrows Run north of Westernport on Westernport Rd. about 3 - 5 miles. >From my grandmothers memory the Grove's pretty much owned the top of that mountain a long time ago. None of the census records list any Groves, I guess the census takers didn't travel that far back into hills. LOL. Any help with the Grove lineage would be appreciated. My grandmother Leona's parents were Lewis Buskirk and Alice M. Dawson of Midland, MD. Lewis was a store keeper (confirmed by my grndmother and the 1930 census) and Alice's Parents were Charles Dawson (I know for sure) and Mary (I do not know the maiden name). Alice had a sister named Emma and I think another sister Mary. According to the 1930 census Charles Dawson was born somewhere in PA. In the 1920 census Lewis had indicated the his parents were from Germany but on the 1930 census it lists his parents from MD. The Buskirk name used to be VanBuskirk according to my grandmother. I am stuck on the Charles Dawson part and would like to know where in PA he was born. Bryan Baire
Katheen, Your explanation for LP sounds good to me. I have had no other input. Your John Davis is probably the same man who married my great grandfather to his second wife. I am sure the idea of no blood tests was a big factor in people crossing state lines to wed. This also meant no waiting for test results. Thank you for giving me extra info on Davis. Delores

Claudia, I have people in my family tree that went to Oakland from WV to wed. A cousin says that he got married in a church beside the courthouse. At that time no blood test was needed in MD, but was required in WV. I believe things are changed now. My cousin married a 14 year-old girl; they lied about her age, and no questions were asked. A lot of marriage records can still be researched at the courthouse. Of course, a justice of the peace could also unite the couple. My latest find said the couple was married by John Davis, LP. If anyone knows what that means, please let me know. Delores

Sam, Thanks for your reply and help, when I find names of people that you suspect are related and they are moving from county to county and state to state together in the same time frames, than I get a hunch and strong feeling that they are more than just friends. It is all just a hunch , I base my resource on facts and proof. I found Benjamin Junkins enumerated next to James Fitzwater in the 1830, Maryland, Allegany County, census. Benjamin is the brother of John W. Junkins who married Ruth Fitzwater. So what do you think? Les

Hi Leslie: We don't have a maiden name for the wife of John W. Junkins brother, Benjamin's first wife (I don't think), "Elizabeth Mary Jane". No spouse at all for his brothers William and Joseph Junkins, so one of them could also have married a Fitzwater. I guess that if there was any record of their marriages Earlene Babcock would have found them. I found this in my notes for their father, William Junkins- Hampshire County was formed in 1754 from Augusta County. Hardy County was formed in 1785 from Hampshire, and Mineral County was also formed from Hampshire in 1866, and in the same year Grant County was formed from Hardy County. I wonder if there might be any records of interest in Hardy County? Sam "L.Leeke" wrote: > Sam, > Silas Fitzwater is my gt,gt,gt, grandfather. Hi Bonnie: Henry's date of birth was April 19, 1846 rather than Apr. 18. That's the date given by Hoye. Hi there, My husband's grandparents, Fanny Idona Gregory & James Quinter Sines, both of Goshen,Upshur Co. WV, traveled to Garrett Co. in Nov. of 1913 to be married in Oakland. I'd always thought that odd in as much as Quinter's father was one of several Ministers in the family who'd married couples in the Goshen & Canaan communities of Upshur Co. WV. His father didn't die until 1955 so I've always wondered why they would travel so far, (about 125 miles by train back then, I think) especially when it was that late in the fall, to be married in Maryland instead of at home near friends/family. After reading Delores' comment about her cousin's 14 year old bride, I pulled their file and found that Miss Fanny was just 16 at the time while Quinter was 23. Likewise, a distant cousin C.B. Sines, author of "The book of the Sines", (also of Upshur Co. WV) eloped to Oakland as well to marry his 16 year old wife in 1903. He states in his 1958 book: "...I told her I would be ready anytime after the 11th of August, as I wanted to wait until I was twenty-one. Under the law men must be twenty-one or older and girls had to be sixteen or older...." On August 11th, 21 year old C.B. and his 16 year old bride-to-be arranged to meet each other in Oakland where he told her that if she still wanted to get married they would make the arrangements that very day. "....She agreed to my plans and we got the license and engaged a minister, Rev. John M. Davis of Oakland. He ran a hardware store on Second Street, where the five & ten cent store and Warnick store is now located. Rev. Davis lived in the part where Warnick has his store..." . It does seems to have been rather easy then to get married quickly to teenage brides in Oakland! "LP"...Licensed Preacher? Hmmm? Just a suggestion! {;o) Bye for now, Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: Thomas Shade <tomdel2@webtv.net> To: <MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 29, 2003 7:49 PM Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] GENERAL MARRIAGE QUESTION > Claudia, I have people in my family tree that went to Oakland from WV to > wed. Mary Jane - I just looked again, and of course Rebecca has to be Henry's 2nd marriage. He married Goldie in 1885, and Rebecca didn't die until 1927 in Idaho. -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, August 28, 2003 20:08:26 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Goldie McRobie HERE IS SOME INFORMATION I JUST GOT,, HENRY FITZWATER B. Mary Jane? This is interesting. You have the first marriage to Rebecca? I thought Henry and Goldie probably met and married in Garrett County. I have a birth for Henry of of 18 Apr 1846 - I think I got it from Sam Bowser, who is on this list. Did you see the earlier message that Goldie is the daughter of William McCrobie and Sarah Paugh? Thanks for the information - and let me know if you need any more McCrobie info. Stephen Schlosnagle's book Garrett County: A History of Maryland's Tableland quotes a Thomas Brandt in 1900 that "The first political meeting that was ever held in Oakland...was held in a ten pin alley located a little way north of Kennedy's grog shop. It was during the Buchanan and Fremont campaign of 1856." My gggm was Mary Kennedy who married John Tuhill 28 Dec 1853, then James Weisman 11 Feb 1863. She was related, and I am trying to find out exactly how, to Kennedys shown on the Oakland 1870 census as Margaret Kennedy 39, Saloon Keeper, with children Bridget 16, and William 12. Bridget married William Broderick a CW veteran from Canada, and the children of William and Bridget according to my great uncle were "close relatives." Bridget's obit says she was the daughter of William Kennedy. Does anyone know anything at all about "Kennedy's grog shop", or the people mentioned? Any help appreciated.
