Thanks Pat for the message. I'm sure it would help some Hoffman. I wish it would have helped me. ^..^ Harriet I went into town this morn to get my Father's (Harry O'Brian Hoffman) discharge papers from the Marines. It doesn't give a lot of info but his Social Security # is on it, when he was discharged and where he enlisted. He was living in Marion Co WV but enlisted in Pittsburg PA. that's about 2 hours from where he lived. I always assumed the men would have enlisted in the same town where they lived. He was b. 1897 and enlisted 1918. His operating Base was Hampton Roads VA If someone doesn't have a SS# for a relative you can find one on discharge papers. Harriet

Delores, There were 3 or 4 William Henry Harrison Friend about the time of the Civil War. My niece found 3 in MD and one in Ohio archives for this period. There was quite a discussion on them a year or so ago on this list, so maybe the archives would have something. Should be there. I have a Archibald Chisom HAMILL b. 2 Nov 1836 MD d. 24 Feb 1900 who married Ruth WILSON b 28 Mar 1841 d. 21 Feb 1879. Archibald's father according to my records was Henry HAMILL. Archibald and Ruth had (9) children: Mary Alice, James Henry, Anna Eliza, John Swann, Emeline Frances, Louisa Jane, Nancy Catherine, & Roger. They were in the areas of Kitzmiller, Garrett Co MD, Frederick Co. MD and West Virginia. Does this sound familiar at all>? Thank you for any corrections or help Margaret Boyer Allen Fairmont, WV
Both of these William H Friends are the wrong birth date for a man who married my great grandmother briefly, before discovering she was pregnant with another man's child. She was born in 1869, and I believe the 1837 Wm. was too old, and the one born in 1879 would have been 10 years old when Grandpap was born. There must have been another William H H Friend. They were married in 1889 in the beginning of the year, and the marriage was either annulled or they were divorced within a month or two. I suspect my Wm. was born between 1850 and 1870. Delores
Ex-Congressman Patrick HAMILL, one of the most respected and honored citizens of Garrett county, died at his residence, in Oakland, Tuesday night, from paralysis. He had been in poor health for two years. Ten days ago, while moving around in his house, he fell and badly injured himself, which finally resulted in paralysis. He had held many public offices. In 1868 he was elected to congress by the Democrats from the Sixth district of Maryland. He was also a member of the Maryland legislature and postmaster of Oakland under the first term of President Cleveland. He was a large owner of lands in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. He leaves a widow and five children. He was known personally to a number of people in Frederick. Jan. 19, 1895 >From the MDFREDER rootsweb Mailing List 10/21/03. Hi Delores, I have 5 different William Henry Harrison Friends on file, plus one William Henry Friend and a William H. Friend, all out of Garrett Co. MD. Twas a very popular name apparently! Three were born between 1861 & 1871. William Henry Harrison Friend b: 1861..but he married Eliza Jane Umbel in 1883 and hung around to have 9 children with her. William Henry Harrison Friend Jr. b: 1864. I list him as married to Martha Sabina Turney, but have no marriage date. William Henry Harrison Friend Jr. b: 1871, who married Effie Friend in 1895. Hi Kathleen, You are mixed up in your info on William Henry Harrison Friend lineage - or I should say Joseph Edward Friend. (This was my father-in-law.) Joseph Edward Friend born June 18,1883 died June 18, 1952, buried in Friend Cemetery,Turkeyneck Rd. Garrett Co. MD. Married on July 3, 1907 at Shady Grove, Fayette Co. PA to Helen Taylor Yeardley b. 26 Dec. 1884 in Braceville IL Died 17 Feb.1958 in Hagerstown, MD at home of her daughter. Buried at Friend Cemetery Turkeyneck Road Garrett Co. MD. Helen (known sometimes as Nellie) was daughter of Ralph Yeardley and Catherine Taylor Yeardley. To this union were 8 children, of which my husband is the youngest. Joseph Edward was only married the one time. Ed was next to youngest his sister Mary Etta being born after his father had died. She was born in Sept. 1885 and he died 21 Feb. 1885. I would have preferred to send this to you privately, but since is was incorrect on the list, thought it better this way. Hi Betty, Thanks so much for the correction and additional data for my Friend files! It appears that I had attached Alice "Allie" VanSickle to 1883 Joseph Edward Friend when in fact she was married to 1869 Joseph S. Friend (s/o Reese Edward Friend & Sarah Ann Twigg)! Considering Joseph Edward's birth year.....it does make him a bit young to have married in 1893! Mercy...what was I thinking!?! Can't believe I didn't catch the date clues before. Glad to have the correction though. Thanks! lois it sounds like mother nature gave you a hard time! hope in spite of the weather your trip was enjoyable. sandy and i are busy teaching, taking spanish and german classes, and getting ready for the winter. we spent a few days in phoenix last week and fell in love with it. there is a 90% chance we will move there in the next year. we are talking to an agent tomorrow about selling our house. we will never get the money back that we have spent on the house, but we are not happy here and feel it is time to move on. are richard and his family back to normal? i guess with all of the problems they have had that he hasnt devoted much time to family history.of course i am not a good one to take about family history since i have been retired for over three years and still have tons of info to sort and get current. shannon took a leave from her job to try teaching. so far she really loves it. i hope she knows what she is doing because it will cost her a big big pay cut if she decides to stay with teaching. our son jimmy is still in atlanta and is studying to be a chef. he loves the food resturant stuff. hey am i rambling? probably so! take care and all of our love. jim and sandy --- TRPLUS@aol.com wrote: > Hi Denise, > > It is very sad about the Lois Hedrick that died in > the Cumberland area. Well, I heard one of the servers was down - but the mail seems so random. Some came through and some didn't. A note I posted last week to several lists has just trickled in between last night and this morning? I though no one knew the answer! :o) I hope this means it's working now...
I think I sent the last message that made it through on October 8th. I would suggest everyone look back over messages right before that and if you sent an answer, resend it. If you go the the message archive itself and click to display the messages chronologically you will be able to see the gap of almost a week with no messages. Preston County list had the same gap. It would be terrible if anyone's amazing breakthrough clue just beamed into space during this time!!!! Hi Denise, It is very sad about the Lois Hedrick that died in the Cumberland area. I didn't have a clue this was on the Garrett site. I had an accummulation of about 200 emails while I was vacationing and had limited access to my email. I had only been responding to emails pertaining to stops and planned meetings along the way. If I had seen the Lois Hedrick in the subject line, you can believe I would've checked it out :-) Do you still have the obit. I would be interested in knowing more. Our travels took us to PA; Frederick, MD; Falls Church, VA; Winchester, VA, Garrett County, MD (the 15th-19th), Alliance, Uniontown and Akron, OH (20th-29). We came through the Cumberland Pass on Sept. 15th and ran smack dab into a downpour that forced us off the highway into a rest center for over a half hour. After the rain slowed, the sun came out and we continued our scenic drive to Garrett County . . . saw several deer with their little ones along the roadway. What a beautiful site! We sat out Isabel Thursday evening (Sept. 18th) at the Holiday Inn in Grantsville after a nice dinner out with cousins (and running around in the pre-Isabel downpour). While the cousins were very alarmed about the approaching storm, potential power outs and property damage, it wasn't as bad as we had thought it would be. Isabel did however flood the area at Hwy 419 and Dung Hill Road (near Jennings) where I wanted to go in search of the old horse and buggy road to the bridge where my great uncle Frederick Hetrick was drowned 10/13/90 (at 22 years old). He had attempted to cross the bridge there that was covered in a flooding of the Casselman, obviously a yearly occurance. Bob Brenneman said some of the old road was probably still there where the flood plane was overgrown. Although the road was flooded and blocked off, it didn't ruin our dinner plans at the Penn Alps Restaurant Friday nite with the Hetrick and Beitzel cousins, some of which I had just met for the first time earlier that week. Beulah Miller braved the storm warnings and drove in early from the Cumberland area to join us. Was very disappointed that plans to meet Beverly Walter Railey and Sam Bowser didn't pan out due to car trouble and the weather situation. Got pictures of: (1) the Peterson Tollhouse (Addison) where my g-grandfather Samuel Slabaught was once a tollkeeper; (2) my 5th g-grandfather, Peter Livingood's Conestoga wagon at the Springs Museum; (3) the Hetrick Road sign on Negro Mountain (Rt 40W & right on Zehner Rd). We drove up there in the fog our last morning in the area; also to the pioneer graveyard in Salisbury, MD on Ord St. (just one block from my cousin Rhea's home).
