    3. I agree with Mary here. CD's should be around for a long time. I work in a photo lab. Just in the last week we have gotten new software on a couple of our machines. We can now burn CDs from digital media. According to the Kodak Co. and Pixel Magic (Which is a company that deals with making software for machinery to copy pictures from multi-media), the picture CDs are designed to last between fifty and one hundred years. So, I would think the technology would be around to read them for a long time. Plus, the new DVD players are coming with being able to read picture CDs made with the Kodak software. 2. Great advice Mary. I purchased a digital camera in April of this year. I managed to take about 200 photos. It broke two days before the end of our vacation in September. Thank goodness it lasted until we could download the photos into our computer. We purchased the Kodak 4.0 mega pixel camera w/zoom etc. online through Cosco. Came with paper, docking station, a memory stick, and carrying case. We returned all to Cosco and got all of our money back. They erased the photos off of the memory that we weren't able to do. Gave us all of our money back. We turned right around and purchased a similar Kodak camera (5 mega pixal, zoom, etc.) for $50 or more less!!! So we are off and running again! The camera takes great photos . . . the ones taken outside are beautiful. I'm not too happy about the pictures taken inside however. Lots of red in them. I haven't had time to experiment with the tools with the photos yet . . . also have to see if I can now salvage them into TIF format and save them to a CD before something else goes kaput. 3. On those indoor shots, are you using the flash? Sometimes there is plenty of light anyway, and while it will take the picture, remember it is incandescent and not a true light, like outdoors. You might look into a filter, too. These attachments are not expensive and a filter that screws on can protect your lens when the cap or cover is not on. Try going to a regular photo shop and talking to them about accessories. If the picture was good to start with, there is little need for photo editing other than cropping. -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Friday, November 14, 2003 15:45:01 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] CD STORAGE Great advice Mary. At least with the CDs I think we can rest assured that they will last a long time so you can at least reprint photos. I've had some color (copy) prints made from photos hanging on my wall for several years. They still look real nice, but they have faded somewhat. The copies were made on a commercial color copier. I believe the machine used color toner (not ink) and was fused to the paper. My black and white laser printers cost $1400 new. Most of the equipment is made cheap so most people can afford it these days. They're called "throw aways." It doesn't pay to try to fix it. My inkjets have come down in price from $1,000 to under $400 now. . . but the commercial inkjet/toner printers are still $2,500 and up. It's hard to justify those kinds of costs for personal use. If you have your photos saved to a CD, you can get prints made at the photo developing place fairly inexpensively. You can do your own reprints at Cosco. Since I'm retiring my business, I haven't really kept up with the industry pricing on the high end equipment. Food for thought though. Lois Hetrick Stewart

    1. Re: [MDGARRET] CD STORAGE
    2. I would think that CDs will probably be around for a long time--VHS is still around and we still have a reel to reel tape player, but the media is slowly being replaced with the DVDs. I started using magnetic tape word processors in 1972 and magnetic card selectric typewriters in 1973. Then the WANG wordprocessors took the place of typewriters. Then came the IBM Displaywriter and Electronic Typewriters with memories, soon followed by Personal Computers. The floppies will probably go away in the not too distant future. I also have had zip disks for about 10 years. Many publishers still use these zip disk drives to run their presses and color copiers. However, the small 100 zip drives are being replaced by the bigger ones. I did a family calendar with 100 photos in it in 1997. Everything was processed using Word Perfect software and graphics and scanned photos in Tif format. It took two zip disks to save the final calendar. One zip disk holds approx 100 HD floppy disks worth of data. One CD can be used to save everything on a hard drive. You can virtually put a whole library in a desk drawer. Now we have email and the JPEG format which takes considerably less bytes than the .tif format. Also with CDs, as opposed to zip disks, the retrieval is much faster. A zip disk costs about $10 each. If you have a CD read/write you can buy CDs by the gross for little of nothing. So, I believe CDs at least will still be around. 3. I would like to pass along something I read in Digital Photo mag. regarding JPEG versus TIF format. Although TIF format is larger, you should always save a copy of your graphic files in that format because it is a lot better as far as the colors, sharpness, etc. You get a lot of "noise" with JPEG files. So if it's a particular photo that near and dear always work from a TIF file. I agree. That's why I think it would be best to combine my floppies and hard copy information to CDs in alpha order by surname. Then it would be easy to read and search using the CD. Maybe even one CD per alpha. Then they could be easily accessed, searched and/or copied . . . they hold a gazillion files and 26 CD's would take up no significant room at all. Space is a premium everywhere you go. Now all I have to do is find the time to file manage all of this.
