I hope somebody stopped this before it went far. This comes up quite often, and is phoney. It always comes from somebody who believes it implicitly. I fell for it about a year ago, and deleted the file from my computer, which I should not have done. Fortunately, I do not use the file anyway, but those to whom I forwarded the message may have had a different situation. I quickly got responses informing me of the hoax from some people I had contacted.
Kathleen, Regarding Marie Vespie Friend - born in 1908 - are you sure of the birth date? The reason I am asking is - that would make Mary Martha about 50 years old at the time of Marie's birth. Sam, From the preface by Edward Stabler I found the following: "My task, though a "labor of love," is comparatively a very humble one, and has been mainly confined to the correction of grammatical errors; for I desired as much as possible to preserve the easy and rather peculiar style of the Author , as it came from his sturdy and unpractised pen,....." I am now up to chapter three, and intend to reserve judgement until I read the entire work. I have put my foot in my mouth enough for a while. Delores
Kathleen, You have Alvin Harrison Friend as being born Aug. 1889. I have him as Oct. 10, 1888 and died on May 13, 1952 and is buried at Friends Cemetery, Hoyes Run, Garrett Co., Maryland. The information for this was taken from an obituary that I think I got from Pat. Wendy --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). For what's it's worth. The mere comment on storing, archiving, and publishing our genealogy to a CD probably saved me hundreds of dollars. It was right in my face. I work with this media every day, but was so deep into the "old" ways of publishing, I may never have thought about publishing all of my information to CDs like Mr. Wilt if it hadn't been for this site. For this, I am very grateful. Resources, space and organization, and equipment we use to collect our genealogy is very important to me. I in no way meant to sound like I was bragging about what I have or how I manage things. Was instead trying to offer some idea of how I've done things in the hopes it will help others on the list. Again, I apologize if I've done something wrong but am thankful to all of you who have contributed to this information. This is all I have to say on this matter. Lois Hetrick Stewart

I have a good number of pages of baptism records from St. Peter's Catholic Church in Oakland all before the restricted date of 1930. I got them from the Md. Archives microfilm this June. I would like to transcribe them and post them, but old Baptism records of Catholic churches were latinized by the priests. So the first names were morphed into a Latin name. They were also hand written. So I have 2 concerns. 1., Reading the handwriting accurately., 2., Should I try to put the first name back into english or (I think this is what I should do) just try to spell the name out as written by the priest and let you out on the list decide whether it could be a name you are interested in. On a limited basis I can probably send a scan of individual records anyone asks me about. Also the words between the names are latin and I have picked up on some of them but not all. It will take me quite a while to post them all, but this is a good message board and there is lots of good sharing! here. Hey, out on the list, do you agree I should try my best to type the names just as Latinized by the priests? Art --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Free Pop-Up Blocker - Get it now
I'm afraid I got everyone started with my "Not about Walt W message" recalling how we all wondered what happened to Jack L's 900 page civil war novel manuscript and research files, then everyone got worried about how to donate their files and how to record their videos to disk, and how to get photos from in a video to still form. Not to sound like an ad, but I had heard of a product that converts vhs tapes straight to dvd and yesterday I heard a mention in a Sears ad, then found the following which is available from more sellers: "The external HP DVD movie writer dc3000 with built-in analog video capture lets you quickly and easily transfer home video directly from tape (via camcorder or VCR) to DVD. All for a low price of $349.00." The way I read it you just plug in your video and audio wires from a vcr or camcorder and put in a blank dvd disk, start the machine, and the rest is automatic. Hi Lois: I meant to send that directly to you, rather than the list. $200 sounds like a steal if you can find one for that. Regular 17" monitor at Walmart was $118 . When you say "Liquid Chrystal Display" and Plasma screen tv in the same breath, it sounds like similar technology, but whether the two are the same, similar, or dissimilar; I don't know. I haven't been getting very good mileage out of regular monitors. About 3 years. According to the techies, heat is usually the culprit. With 9 volt for LCD compared to 120V for a regular monitor, maybe less heat will mean longer life. Time will tell. As far as plasma tv at $5000- I don't think so. I envy your space, but I know; regardless of how much one has, the more one gets, and the space fills up, & one needs more room, so they can get more stuff; etc., ...<G> Sam TRPLUS@aol.com wrote: > Thanks Sam, > > Been looking at the flat screens . . . seems I've seen them at Cosco for > around $200. Hi Pat: Funny this came up when it did, because I had this screen up for the 1900 census. This must have been, Stephen Jr. 1900 Federal census, Maryland, Garrett County, Election District 6 (Sang Run area) Enumeration District 42, Sheet 8A, SK Image 42-08A taken June 13-14. Unless shown otherwise, all members of the household and all of their parents were born in MD and were able to read & write, age at last birthday. Dwelling 134 Family 134 "Friend, Stephen W.", Head, WM age 45 born Dec., 1854, married 19 years (1881), Farmer, Owns his Farm, Free of Mortgage. "Mary M.", Wife, WF age 32, born May 1868, Married 19 years (1881) Mother of 10 Children, 9 Living. Children: Wm. D., Feb 1884. "Rebecca L.", March, 1885. "Lacy V.", Aug., 1886. "Alva H.", Aug., 1887; "Blanch", July 1889; "Lenzie (?) E.", Aug.(?), 1893. "Mathias D.", July 1895. "Pearly M. C.", July, 1899. Wonder what "Mary M."'s maiden name was. One child is missing; probably the oldest, married. Sam Pat Thompson wrote: > There is a will in the Index of Garrett County Wills for Stephen W. I have a copy of Alvin's obit from our good Pat as well and it does say Oct.10.1888. I guess I just hadn't gotten around to checking his file against it and correcting the error yet. Thanks so much for pointing this out! I've taken care of that now. . I thought I had gotten that Aug.1889 date off the census but I see it says Aug.1887! http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/md/garrett/census/1900/42-08a.gif I may have scanned one too many census sheets that day and my tired old eyes were playing tricks on me, confusing his birth year with his sister Blanch's directly below. But this then raises the question of the birthdate I have for his sister Blanch in my files. While the 1900 census lists her as 1889, my files say 1891. Hmmm? I may have gotten the date from Paul King's site at GenCircles. http://www.gencircles.com/users/kingpaul/2/data/27556 He too lists Alvin as Aug.1889 and Blanch as Jul.1891. ~ Say, while I was rechecking that source, I spotted a link at Paul's site to a Richard Keefer's site also at GenCircles. http://www.gencircles.com/users/rkeefer/1/data/2070 He has posted a list of children for Stephen Jr. & Mary too. According to Richard's list there was a daughter, child #9, named "Daisey E. Friend, born 1901". He lists his source as the 1910 census for Sang Run. Does anyone know anything about her? She's a new one for me. He also lists child #10 as "Vespie M., born Jun. 1908", also according to the 1910 census. I don't have access to the 1910 census so I wasn't able to recheck this info. =========================== ----- Original Message ----- From: Wendy Mammoliti <wmammoliti@cogeco.ca> To: <MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 23, 2003 9:01 PM Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] friend/sines > Kathleen, > > Regarding Marie Vespie Friend - born in 1908 - are you sure of the birth > date? Will keep poking about for answers... Bye for now, Kathleen

Mr. Sam asked: "...Wonder what "Mary M."'s maiden name was...." That would be: "...Mary Martha DeWitt..." but I don't know who her folks were. He mentioned: "..One child is missing, probably the oldest, married.." This is weird Sam. The 1900 census says Mary was the mother of 10 with 9 living children that year and my files do list them with 9 children.... BUT......the only one of the nine children (listed in my files) that wasn't in the 1900 census was daughter Marie Vespie Friend. I don't list her as being born until Jun.30.1908 so if she's the missing 9th child then I MUST have her birth date wrong. I list the nine as: 1) William D. Friend b: Feb.1884 2) Rebecca L. Friend b: Mar.1885 3) Lucy V. Friend b: Aug.1886 4) Alvin Harrison Friend b: Aug.1889 5) Blanch Friend b: Jul.1891 6) Lindsey Ellis Friend b: Jun.1893 7) Mathias D. Friend b: Jul.1895 8) Barbara M. C. Friend b: Jul.1899 9) Marie Vespie Friend b: Jun.30.1908 ====== I list Marie as having died in 1987 and being buried in the Hoyes Run Cem.over in McHenry so maybe someone could check for her birthdate if they have a current list for the Cem. She was married to a McDonald and living in Pottsville, Pa. in 1959, according to her brother Alvin's obit. Stephen & Mary married Oct.24.1880 so if daughter Marie was born before William her birth year would have been between 1881 and 1883. Alvin's obit listed one of his surviving sisters as "Mrs. Mary Woods" of Morgantown. Could "Mary" be the "M" in Barbara M.C.'s name? ====== Mr. Sam said: "....Children: Wm. D., Feb 1884. "Rebecca L.", March, 1885. "Lacy V.", Aug., 1886. "Alva H.", Aug., 1887; "Blanch", July 1889; "Lenzie (?) E.", Aug.(?), 1893. "Mathias D.", July 1895. "Pearly M. C.", July, 1899...." ~ There are lot's of spelling errors on this census page (as usual). Note neighbor Soloman Sines' surname is spelled Sine and his son Asa's name is spelled Asia while son John Henry, living next door, gets his surname spelled correctly as Sines. Anyway, if you look closer at those handwritten entries for Stephen Jr.'s family you'll see: "Lacy V." is Lucy V. "Alva H." is a son, this is Alvin Harrison (according to his obit) and "Pearly" is Barby for Barbara M.C. ============= Bye for now, Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: Samuel J.
