Are there any copies of the DAR Garrett County Graves vol. 1 books for sale anywhere? The Garrett County Historical Society is sold out. I have checked the book out of the library but would love to have a copy if anyone knows of one for sale. --------------------------------- How low will we go? Check out Yahoo! Folks, I am wondering if you have recollections of any stories of disappearances of a girl or small woman on or around negro mountain area. Time frame is uncertain, could have been 1840 up through 1910 or so, and if in these stories there might be a discription of clothing. I'm trying to unravel a minor mystery. You may contact me at [email protected] if you like. thanks, Bill Durst __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Jeanne, Sorry. Never heard of Hitchcocks tunnel. Todd
Todd, A question about Warnick's point / Warnick's Run, do you know if this Warnick land was in or near Hitchcock Tunnel ? My grandfather was married to Florence Rebecca Warnick daughter of "Burr" and Mary Jane Paugh Warnick. John was buried on Warnick land at Hitchcock Tunnel. Thank for any light you can shed on this. Jeanne
Ken, The Elbow is a part of the Savage RIver. It refers to the bend in the river but also the unusal mountain formation around it, Elbow mountain. It is now part of a park and set aside for wilderness. Trout fishing in the river is popular there and they stock the river to help the population. Families in this area were Warnick (Warnick's point and Warnick Run) Fazenbaker and Broadwater. The Broadwater Cemetery is located just south of the Elbow and Warnick's Point along with Broadwater Chapel which sets on the River flood plain flat. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth and no wonder our ancestors settled there...but the winters! Todd
Hello, Can someone please tell me what were the areas known as Elbow 11-Dist, Garrett Co, MD? Thank you, Ken
Erin, Unfortunately, both Maxine and Gene are deceased. This was my ex-husband's family and I don't really know anything more about them. Wish I did because I have a daughter by their son and I'm sure she would love any info. My research so far has been through the Johnston, Miller line and I believe that includes George Upole and some Taskers. Thanks for the info though. Thanks for your extensive help! I did see the one census where Queen and her brother were listed as Lish and then that name had been crossed out and replaced with Shrout. I never knew if that was the census-taker's error or if it revealed something more. It is good to hear the possibility of a Lish father validated by another researcher. If you know anyone who could shed further light on the lives of Queen and Prince (unfortunate names -- don't you think?), please let me know. Queen was my husband's great-great-grandmother. --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min.

I think I saw something in that information where he had a little girl that his wife needed help with In a message dated 7/29/2006 8:30:01 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: TRPLUS, The last few days I've been trying to think of a way to claim relationship to the BROOKE family mentioned, but from what I know there is little hope. If Samuel came from MA as seems the most likely and was a drifter in PA when he met Mary QUEER in Somerset he could hardly be related to the BROOKE family. Nevertheless, I thank you for your effort and willingness to spend the time writing the information that you found. I have little knowledge of what resources are available in MD, but I suppose that it is similar to PA where I've had little concrete information outside of census lists. Samuel seems to have come out of nowhere, married and had 5-6 children with Mary and disappeared (died), probably in the Maryland mountains. I've held out hope of finding someone in the QUEER or BROOKS FAMILY that kept a family record, but so far no luck for most of the 1800s. They must not have had much in the way of property for there are few wills after the first of the family, Lawrence QUEER in the 1790 and subsequent census. He died in 1847 in Somerset CO., PA. He mentioned only one of his many children by name (a granddaughter who must have been handicapped in some way) Dr. Brooke was a Methodist and a wealthy man. Prior to 1825 he moved from wild Cherry Tree Meadows to Virginia. In that year, Thomas F. Brooke "of Monongalia Co., VA." (Morgantown) deeded to his sons John B., Samuel H., the "Pleasant Valley" tract, at a fork of the Little Crossings (Casselman River), which he had purchased [from] Jesse Tomlinson in 1807. [Thomas] willed that his dau Priscilla B. Brooke be supported and taken care of by ... "my wife .... black woman Lucy to attend on her during her life." Priscilla would have been Samuel H's sister--so that's no help. and signed his will with his mark (X). I have found very little in church records such as marriage, death and birth after Lawrence's first wife died. She was a BOYER and a German Lutheran. Thanks again. I won't give up. I wish you good luck in your search. Can make you crazy sometimes huh. Lois Hetrick Stewart
