    1. Broadwater Chapel
    2. In regard to the location of the Chapel, is it in the same location as it was 160 years ago? Would we be making a pilgrimage to the wrong spot? Doret

    1. Broadwater Chapel
    2. Greetings listers - it has been sometime since I have been on the list as I thought I was finished doing my husband's genealogy. Never. We would like to visit the old Broadwater Chapel on Savage River Road as the first Jenkins/Jinkins attended there in the 1840-1860's. I believe it's the Dunker or Dunkard Chapel now. Which approach is easier on the car - from the south or north? It's hard to tell on a map if the road is paved or dirt. Thanks much. Doret Jenkins

    1. Re: [MDGARRET] Broadwater Chapel
    2. Doret, I went there last April. I went from Barton and crossed over through a lot of strip mines and that was a longer way. The best and easiest way is to get the road, I think it is Savage River Road from Bloomington. This is possibly one of the most beautiful areas in the country. The present building was built in 1909 so would not be the church building where the Warnicks and Broadwaters originally worshiped. I was a little disappointed but the area is beautiful. The chapel is on the river flood plain flat. I didn't get to go to the Broadwater cemetery which is up the road a bit and at the end of someone's driveway. I think it takes a 4 wheel drive to get back there. How do you know that the earlier church is in the same place as the Broadwater CHapel? As you go north there is an outcropping of rock which comes to a point and that is Warnick's point. Good luck. Todd

    3. Thank you for your reply. I'll have to do some searching as I had not incorporated the Baker line into my Gainer file when the data went astray. (I seem to have a remarkable ability to destroy mail systems from time to time and yet have not found a good program for extracting individual messages to a safer location -- usually a result of the earthlink mail system wanting to compress the mail file when junk has been deleted.) I'll try to get back to you "reasonable" soon. 3. The new Rootsweb mailing list system (Mailman) has gone into effect beginning today and continuing for the next couple of weeks, staggered alphabetically according to the following schedule: Thursday, August 17 - Lists A-C Monday, August 21 - Lists D-F Tuesday, August 22 - Lists G-I Wednesday, August 23 - Lists J-L Thursday, August 24 - Lists M-O Monday, August 28 - Lists P-R Tuesday, August 29 - Lists S-U Wednesday, August 30 - Lists V-Z You may check this link for any changes to the timetable: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html While the "migration" of the lists to a new server should process uneventfully for listmembers, there are a few points that need to be covered: 1. AOL users (and possibly some other ISPs), please check your spam folders and, if you find list mail held as spam, you will need to be sure to click the *THIS IS NOT SPAM* link to send the list mail to your current mailbox. This will "train" the system to understand that mail from this new server is not spam. 2. If you are subscribed to both L & D mail modes of this list, the new system is not set up to send both to the same email address. If you want to be subscribed in both modes (many subscribe to both -- regular mail mode to read and delete and digest to file and save), it will be necessary to use another email address for your digest mail. It is my understanding that if you are subscribed to the list in both mail modes with the same address, you will be dropped from the digest list roster, so if this happens to you, please resubscribe with another address (Yahoo might be a good choice for an alternate email address). This will not effect those who subscribe in either of the mail modes exclusively. ******************************************** I'm Still reading up on this change... So please bear with me if problems show up.. There might be other changes so I'll try to keep everyone informed Sonny O'Haver

    3. Nicholas, I have extensive information about the Fazenbaker family, but I cannot make a firm connection with any of the people you name in your note. In the mid-1850s, a number of western Maryland families moved to what is now Calhoun County, West Virginia. The families included the surnames Barnes, Ayers, Kile and probably others. The Barnes families were descended from the Fazenbakers. It would be very helpful if you could provide a few more clues. 3. Several years ago while working on the descendants of Bryan & Mary (...) Gainer who resided for a while in what is now Garret county I came across a Baker family among their daughter Margaret (Gainer) Ayers' family who was also linked to the Fazenbacker family. I have since lost the reference and cannot relocate the source of the information. The family had moved from Garret county to either Gilmer county, (now WV) or an adjacent county. Many of the children of George Gainer, a son of Bryan & Mary, and some of the children of Bryan Gainer, another son and of a daughter Elizabeth (Gainer) Sturm had also relocated to the Gilmer county area in the 1840 and subsequently. Can anyone give me leads of the Baker family associated with this family? Vashti Potter as also connected with the migration and her name appeared among many of the children of this Gainer clan. Thank you for any clues to get me reconnected to information on thie Baker and Fazenbacker connection. Nicholas Sturm (descendant of the ELizabeth (Gainer) mentioned)

I have yet to order death certificates for my grandparents, Elizabeth "Lizzy" Slabaugh and Melchoir Hetrick. I received the Hederich/Hetrick lineage from Germany last Christmas and have been putting them in org chart format for the last 8 months--what a job!!! I have over 70 charts and in this format, they reveal a lot of connections . . . as well as more questions. ;o) I have the paperwork around here somewhere to send away for their death certificates. 2. Hi Connie, Good to see you reporting some history online. If you ever get in the 1923 stuff, would you look for Clarence R. Hetrick's mining accident--He died 7/1923. A couple of people thought they had something on this that mentioned the mine where this happened, but I've never received anything. Must be in the newpapers or his obit don't ya think. He was living in Accident at the time. Clarence and Effie Hockman owned the Reis Hotel at that time. Daughter Gladys Hetrick b. 1914, was about 9 years old (raised by John and Ida Hetrick, Clarence's parents. Gladys's mother, Florence Miller, died after childbirth), Blaine was about 5, and Lawrence E. was only 3. Lois Hetrick Stewart

Henry Spitznas, Jr., Ormand St., about 5 months ago, found a coin on the site of the Braddock Road near St. John's Rock (near Finzel), which he has good reason to believe it is over 2,000 years old. It is of brass metal, Egyptian Coinage, about as large as a half dollar and carries on one side medallions of the sphinx, pyramids and rising Sun, and on the other side a bust of one of the pharohs. Mr. Spitznas will doubtless submit the coin to the investigation of numismatics to accertain its value. {If any of you know about the outcome here, let us know.} 2. Mrs. Wm. Parker: This most estimable lady died at the family home in Eckhart early Saturday morning, Jan. 30th, after 2 weeks illness of paralysis resulting from a fall. Mrs. Parker was the widow of Wm. Parker, Sr., in his day a prominent merchant of Eckhart. He died about 5 years ago. Two daughters and 2 sons are berieved, Mss Fanny & Drucilla of Eckhart, and Msrs Stanley and Norton Parker of Pittsburgh, PA Mrs, Parker's maiden name was Porter, one of the pioneer families of this section, and she enjoyed the additional distinction of being 1 of 21 children, of whom but 2 are now living: Mrs. Justus Rephorn of Eckhart and Mr. Josiah Porter of Cumberland. That's all I had time to copy by hand. I was working at the Frostburg Museum. There was only the one page there. We did have visitors who came from Tasmania to visit their son and see that he got a dorm room at Frostburg State University. We had a good time all afternoon. Connie

    1. Re: [MDGARRET] Mary Ellen Ravenscroft m. George Fazenbaker May 1864
    2. I have a Mary E. Ravens croft, born 1837, to Abner Ravenscroft and Nancy Corbus Ravenscroft. This may be the one that you're looking for. If you have ancestry.com, go to the One Tree World and look for Abner Ravenscroft---this will give you lots of information. If you don't have Ancestry get back to me and I'll give you more information. Eleanor Greentree
