    2. K.Fitzgerald
    3. Hi there, Don't know about the "yurse" part, but I suspect that by "sliperalum" she meant "slippery elm". I fold this on-line for you: ".... Slippery Elm helps relieve digestive discomfort and provides mucilage to soothe the digestive tract. It grows widely throughout North America and is also known by the names Red Elm, Moose Elm and Indian Elm. . The plant contains mucilage, a long chain of sugars (polysaccharides) that make a slippery substance when combined with water. This mucilage is believed to soothe the digestive system. Slippery elm is also rich in nutrients and is easy to digest, making it an excellent food during times of digestive discomfort. . It can be made into a gruel. In times of famine, early American settlers used it as a survival food; George Washington and his troops survived for several days on slippery elm gruel during the bitter winter at Valley Forge...." . Also: "...Slippery Elm is taken orally for stomach inflammation, ulcers, and sore throat. Applied to the skin, it can be used as a treatment for wounds, burns, and skin conditions. It is the powdered inner bark of the tree that provides relief. It forms a slippery, viscous coating that soothes irritation in the throat and the lining of the stomach. Its water-retaining properties also make it an ideal ingredient for a soothing compress...." . "...Commercial lozenges containing Slippery Elm are best for throat conditions. For stomach problems, you can make a tea by pouring 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoonful of Slippery Elm powder. To apply to a wound or a burn, mix the powder with water to form a paste. ..." . "... Slippery elm (Ulmus fulva) has been used as an herbal remedy in North America for centuries. Native Americans used slippery elm in healing salves for wounds, boils, ulcers, burns, and skin inflammation. Antiseptic poultices made from the mucilage or gummy secretion from the bark were applied to infected wounds. In particular, the Cherokee used Slippery elm for coughs, skin conditions, and as an eye wash...." 3. MAILING LISTS MOVING TO NEW SYSTEM The RootsWeb.Com mailing lists are moving to a new list management System. No new lists will be created until this move is completed. Not all of the lists are being moved at one time. It will take about two Weeks to complete the process. Additional information about the update And a current schedule can be found at http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html How will it affect you? Your current subscription(S) will transfer Automatically to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe To your list(S). However, because the sending and receiving of list e- Mail will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to Your list(S). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the Layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list e-mails come from will be different -- [email protected] vs. The current [email protected] You may Have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" List to prevent messages from being caught in your "junk" folders. RootsWeb appreciates your patience during this transition and hopes that The mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy Research.

    3. I thought you knew about this. I work for the meyersdale library and they have a wonderful genealogy section. they have a lot of records from the funeral homes in the area. check out the meyersdalelibrary.com site under genealogy. there is a section the lists most of the items we have in the genealogy room. 3. Sonny, Thanks for posting this. Glad to see that Carol Hepburn is still part of the Somerset County Genealogy functions. She's a wonderful lady. 3. Meyersdale, PA Public Library Donates 28,000 Obituary Records for Online Genealogy Research by Joe Patterson The Meyersdale Public Library graciously donated over 28,000 obituary records to the Somerset County, Pennsylvania, USGenWeb project, see http://www.rootsweb.com/~pasomers/ The obituary records were donated as part of an ongoing records transcription project initiated by the Meyersdale Public Library. "The library has been encouraged to place records online as part of its overall Internet database policy but was unable to perform such a task on its own. Their resources were limited, and they just didn't have enough manpower to transcribe the records for online storage," said Carol Hepburn. The project was initiated by Cynthia Mason, Research Librarian and resident Genealogist with the Meyersdale Public Library and began last August with an email asking for assistance. Miss Hepburn, USGenWeb Archives and Somerset County website co-coordinator, was contacted by the library staff and asked if there was any way the website project could handle transcribing and placing the obituary records online. Her reply was, "We have had great success getting other records transcribed, most notably, the U.S. Census Schedules. Our team coordinator, April Phillips, has done an outstanding job coordinating volunteers and overseeing the Census Project for several years now. I knew with her help we could recruit transcribers and get these obituaries placed online." The USGenWeb Archives was selected as the online storage location as its policy of free access was in keeping with the library's goals and not dependent on any one person maintaining this large collection. Placement in the Archives makes the data available to the USGenWeb Archives' county, state-wide and national search engine, as well. The collection, originally in tif format on CD-ROM, was converted to smaller gif files, and uploaded to a temporary directory, where transcribers and proofreaders could view them as they typed in Notepad, using Windows split screen, a system much faster and economical than sending out paper copies to transcribers. Over the course of the past eight months, 50 volunteers were involved in scanning, typing and proofing the 28,000 obituaries. Continued support from the Meyersdale Library was essential in resolving questions on obituaries which were partially unreadable or caused other questions. The Project is nearly complete, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the volunteers. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/somerset/mdale.html This Special Obituary Collection (primarily 1970-2004) contains not only Somerset residents but many from nearby Pennsylvania and Maryland counties and former residents who migrated. The obituary project management team members are dually county coordinators for PAGenWeb and file managers for the PAGenWeb Archives. 1. Broadwater Chapel
    2. I found the Broadwater Chapel on Terraserver which has everything labeled nicely but we will still try to track by land records if this is on the original site. We are trying to find out who bought the property of Jenkins Hill after Samuel Jinkins and Elisha Jinkins died and will look for the Chapel property at the same time. Samuel Jinkins' 1830 deed says that one part of his property ran along the side of "one Michael Wilt" and was measured as being so many perches from the "said Wilts" residence. Found out a perch is one square rod. Now that is a conversation stopper Thanks to all the listers who answered. Doret

    3. Hi Sam, I believe I am correct in remembering that the Bowser and Turney families are connected. If I am right, then we're cousins. My mother was Elizabeth Jane Turney Brown, b. 27 Jan 1926 in Oakland. I'm trying to find more information on the Turney family and would love to hear from you if you can assist.
