Hi all, In an effort to bring some new cousins up-to-date on their Garrett County Hetricks, I summarized the 40 pg lineage from Germany on the Hetricks, their Diehl and Rohr family connections. I tried to send the file to several of you asking for permission to include your email addresses for those who donated material to this information as well as those who asked for future finds, but many addresses bounced. 3. The problem is the indexes. I don't think Ancestry.com did them. Many typed surnames in the indexes don't even resemble the surname in the actual record; in which case the index is useless, or you have to get lucky. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Margie" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 20, 2006 1:57 PM Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Keziah Friend > One thing I found with Ancestry they aren't good at making out the names. > You have to be awfully creative looking for some of those spellings. 3. I was born in 1948 and Mildred Sharpless was supposed to be the midwife to deliver me, however, when on the day my mother was in labor, there was a mine cave in and she had to assist with the miners on that day. She was a midwife, her father owned the funeral home which was in Blaine, but since Kitzmiller is right over from Vindex, she may be a likely person to have helped in the delivery of babies during that period of time. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janie Shepherd" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 13, 2006 11:03 AM Subject: [MDGARRET] Midwife > Does anybody have any information on who was the midwife in Garrett County > during the years of 1947-1951. 3. While I never heard my grandmother call herself a midwife, I am sure others must have used that title for her. She, Mary Kiser, was a licensed RN, trained in obstetrics, receiving her training in Latrobe, PA. About 1935, she and her family moved to Mt. Lake Park, MD. As there was not a hospital in the area, the nursing home (then simply referred to as the old folk's home) that Mary owned and operated served as a birthing place for mothers of the area. I have never found a count for how many babies were born there but I know babies were born at the Kiser Old Folk's Home, as was yours truly, her granddaughter. My grandchildren find it hilarious when I tell them I was born in an Old Folk's Home. As Mary notified the doctor when a mother was in labor, and if he arrived in time, the birth certification would show the doctors name, but I suppose it may show "Mary Kiser" if she delivered the baby. I am not sure how it was handled if the doctor arrived after the birth; if he signed the birth certificate or not (I just assumed he would have). Many obituaries for the area say the person died at "Mary Kiser's home". After finding and reading several of these obituaries and noting it only said "died at Mary Kiser's home" and not the Kiser Nursing Home, I chuckled at the thought of wondering if other researchers who have found these same obituaries (and not knowing Mary operated a nursing home) must not wonder if Mary wasn't a bad cook or something; to have so many people die at her home. I think too, most likely, some researcher must have scratched their head, wondering who Mary Kiser was and how she was to connected to their family, since their relative died at Mary Kiser's home. Garrett County Memorial Hospital, in Oakland, MD was open in 1951 (my sister was born there). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Branches & Lil' Twigs" <[email protected]> | 1930's, 1940's many times a family member or a neighbor delivered the baby. | My wife's grandmother delivered her with the help of a neighbor in Garrett | County. | | Ken

    3. Pat Thompson told me about one of my Willisons who was a midwife. This was Dorcas Willison who married Israel Friend. Below is what Pat found in the book: Indian Blood by Evelyn Guard Olsen. Please DON'T ask where you can get this book. YOU CAN'T. Connie That incident, from which the catch phrase, "We killed the bar" supposedly originated must have been sometime earlier, when the McCabes were much younger. William McCabe was a blacksmith and the tooth puller of the community. His wife Elizabeth (Aunt Liz) was the midwife who had brought Blanchie, her brothers, and many cousins into the world. This expert midwifery have been taught her art by her mother, old Aunt Dorcy (Dorcas) Friend. Elizabeth was the daughter of Israel Friend of Charles, and one of the Missouri Friends, the child who was carried on the journey west when only six months old. The McCabes lived just a field length north of the Crossings. When this bear walked into their home from these rocky surroundings, Mr. McCabe - so it is related - dashed into the house and ran upstairs, calling to his wife Elizabeth to get the axe. She grabbed the axe and followed her husband up the stairs and was, in turn, followed by the bear. She turned quickly at the head of the stairs and smote the animal a powerful blow on the head. Death for the bear was swift. Billy McCabe, stunned for the moment, turned and beamed exuberantly, "We killed the bar."

    3. Hi there, I would think there would have been more than one Midwife in Garrett county during the mid-1900s. My husband's great-grandmother was the Mid-wife who delivered him & his siblings in Upshur Co. WV and she was only one of several Midwives who served the women of one particular district in that county. I'm sure this would have been true in Garrett Co. MD as well. Even with a car a Midwife could only be expected to serve a certain number of women within a certain distance from her home. . As someone else has already suggested, the name of the Midwife who delivered your sisters would be on your sisters' birth registrations. If a Midwife did in fact handle the delivery, she was usually the one who also registered the birth for the family. . On my husband's birth registration, (filed by his great-grandmother) her name is noted in the "The attending Physician or Midwife" name space. It may be worded differently in Garrett Co. MD but there should be a similair place on their registration forms.. . Bye for now, Kathleen > [Original Message] > From: Janie Shepherd <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 10/13/2006 11:03:54 AM > Subject: [MDGARRET] Midwife > > Does anybody have any information on who was the midwife in Garrett County during the years of 1947-1951.
