Hi, Would you have information re a marriage between H.C.(Walter) Hoff and Bertha Fike? Don't know the date, but suspect it was in the late 1800's. Thank you, Pat

Sounds like Barney probably fought in the Rev. War. These lots west of Fort Cumberland were called Military Lots as they were awarded to those who fought. LENNOX - as in Lennox in Scotland? There are Twin Churches in the Cove too. Used to be in the MDGarrett Photo Album but I can't seem to get to where they are now. I have in inquiry to Sonny, the list administrator asking how we can access them. Lois Hetrick Stewart In a message dated 11/18/2006 10:34:17 A.M. Does anyone know if Marriage records exist for Garrett Co. from 1850 - 1860? Tried to send Rev Bishop a message, but get reply not a valid e-mail.
Looked up Barney in History of Western Maryland, only listing was as settlers located in 1788 upon the lands lying in Maryland west of Fort Cumberland.
No, it does not. In Maryland the names of the parents are not listed. fdb
Garrett County began a county separated from Allegangy County, Maryland in 1872, all marriages prior to that date would be recorded in Cumberland, All. Co., MD Garrett County 'Glades Star' published Thirty Years of Garrett County Marriage Records (1872-1902). I have a copy and would be glad to check any marriages in that time frame. fdb
Thank you so much for your offer, but the marriage I need is in late 1859 or early 1860, and there doesn't seem to be any list that has them on it. Family hearsay says Barney DEWITT was a Circuit-riding Methodist minister (his brother, Peter DEWITT, Jr. was a minister also.) Therefore, I think church records are my best bet. Does anyone know a good resource for those? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 18, 2006 2:48 PM Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Marriage records for 1850-1860 > Garrett County began a county separated from Allegangy County, Maryland in > 1872, all marriages prior to that date would be recorded in Cumberland, > All. > Co., MD > Garrett County 'Glades Star' published Thirty Years of Garrett County > Marriage Records (1872-1902). Does this book list parents of the bride and groom? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 18, 2006 3:48 PM Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] Marriage records for 1850-1860 > Garrett County began a county separated from Allegangy County, Maryland in > 1872, all marriages prior to that date would be recorded in Cumberland, > All. > Co., MD > Garrett County 'Glades Star' published Thirty Years of Garrett County > Marriage Records (1872-1902). Does anyone know if Marriage records exist for Garrett Co. from 1850 - 1860? If so, do you have to go to the courthouse to retrieve them, or are they on CD-Rom somewhere? Also, is Sang Run and/or Selbysport in Garrett Co. or Allegany Co? I'm searching for my 3rd g-grandparents marriage record in this area: Barnabas "Barney" DEWITT, b. 1823, Allegany Co., and Margaret "Maggie" unknown, b. about 1835, Allegany Co., MD. I think it's them I found living in Selbysport on the 1860 census. Margaret was previously married to "unknown" around 1850-51, and had a daughter, Mary E., who was born in 1852. I've never been able to identify Mary E.'s father, or Margaret's parents. Since Barney was, according to family hearsay, a Methodist minister, I thought perhaps church records would be my best bet, as I haven't found them on any other MD marriage lists. THANKS TO ALL for listening - any suggestions are welcomed. Lynn
Seems as if everyone is mixed up as to where the roads are in Garrett County. Our route last Tuesday brought us onto Upper New Germany Road (this continues past New Germany State Park), took a left at Twin Churches Road, (many ancestors are buried in both cemeteries), and followed it to the intersection with Lower New Germany Road, both road names end here. Although we are on the same road as Twin Churches, the name changes to the Westernport Road which continues to there. Savage River Road takes a right in Merrill from the Westernport Road and continues to Bloomington and the distance is approximately 20 miles. Not bad on a foggy drizzly day and we didn't see any "Maryland wildlife". Doret
To my knowledge, there is only one Twine Churches in Garrett Co., MD, located in the New Germany area. One is a Reformed, now UCC Church and one is a United Methodist Church. I would be interested in knowing where there is another one. Thanks, fdb.
