    3. Bill, There is a Conrad GANT in the 1880 MD census Allegany Co. (Frostburg) Conrad, 25, blacksmith, b. VA Rachel, 29, wife, b. MD Step daughter, 11 (I can't make out her name b. MD Charles, (same last name that I can't read) 10, step son b. MD Letia Gant (again, it is hard to read) 3/12, b. Mch. In MD Heritage Quest has three pages of GANT names. I am sorry that I don't have time to send more right now. Pat -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of William Mattox The information you provided has a certain "ring" to it. I noticed a Ralph and a Conrad in the Gantt family. And my grandfather's name was Ralph Conrad. I have a strong suspicion that those men could have been namesakes for him. I also noticed a Pearl Gantt. I know that one of Nannie's sisters was named Pearl. It is possible that one of the other sisters was nicknamed Nannie. There are too many "coincidences" here to ignore and I think this family link deserves further investigation. I'll see if I can find it on my search tool. I am told by family oral tradition that Pearl and her husband ran some kind of a store in Grantsville around the turn of the century so I am going to continue to explore that angle as well. But this is a huge find in my mind. Now my mind is whirring off in a new direction. Thanks for your help.

    3. Bill: Try searching "Maddox" if you're searching census records. The census takers commonly used what they "heard" from the person giving the information. census *Indexes* are often so far off the surname you are looking for that they are useless. 3. Bill, For you stack of miscellaneous information that may or may not connect to your lines: Marriages of Garrett County, MD Charles Thomas GANTZ, 21, of Marshall Co., WV, single, married Oct 21, 1890 to Martha Ellen FLEMMING, 25, of Taylor Co., WV single John GANTZ, 26, of Marshall Co., WV, single, married Dec. 23, 1893 to Elizabeth RIGGINS, 23, of Preston Co., WV, single Annie GANTZ, 20, of Marshall Co., WV, single married Mar. 20, 1893 to Thomas Eugene LATHAM, 21, of Marshall Co., WV, single John Wesley MADDOX, 33, of Harrison Co., WV, single married Dec. 5, 1890 to Aivilda MARTIN, 20, of Harrison Co., WV, single Matsona MADDIX, 19, Barbour Co., WV, single married June 11, 1900 to Orison, McDANIELS(s), 24, of Barbour Co., WV, single

    3. To the list: Thank you for your interest in helping. The birth dates I have for my gr grandfather is July 1868 and for my gr grandmother is Feb 1870. I think that a key to my search may be the Grantsville area because it seems like the GANTZ family had some roots there in that they were running some kind of retail business. I have found the possible link to my Grandfather as a child in the Cecil Maryland area which was mentioned in one of the posts. My gr grandfather did have a brother, Edward, and there is an Eddy mentioned in the sibling list but no one in my family ever heard of any other siblings mentioned there. So that remains a possibility and I have noted it as such. I think the chances are remote but the possibility remains. One big issue that makes me question the Cecil, MD connection is that the Father there lists his birthplace as Delaware. William MATTOX always lists his father's birthplace as MD. But you never know with families right? I suspect that my Gr Grandfather's trade - carpentry - kept him on the move and he has been a challenge to track. I have the family tracked as follows 1900 - Allegheny County, PA - Pittsburgh 1910 - Frostburg, MD 1920 - Allegheny County, PA - Pittsburgh area 1939 - Morgantown, WV All of these events occurred after marriage. I have not been able to find a record of the marriage or anything about them prior to 1900. My mother tells me that they died while living in Gary, IN and that one of them - she thinks it was Nannie - died on 10 Dec, 1954. I am trying to find a death notice for either of them so I can order a death certificate. I am told that both parents should appear on the certificate. I jumped on this list because I am also looking for my connection to the GANTZ line too. I suspected that the GANTZ family may have had a stronger connection to the area and would love to understand it better. Based on the family name, I also suspect that there is a German immigration at some point down the line. Bill Mattox Madison, WI [email protected]

    3. Bill, Did you try using the spelling of Gantt/Gantts?? I have that Conrad D. Gantt m; Rachael (McConnell) Parker in 1875. I am looking for the Parker family. I have Conrad D. Gantt b. 1853 Martinsburg, WV. m Rachael Parker b. 1850/51 d/o William H. Parker & Rebecca Humbertson. Their children; Charles Gantt Melissa Gantt Ida Gantt Conrad Bliss Gantt---d. 1908 at Fort D. A. Russels in Wyoming buried at Frostburg Memorial Park with Parents William Gantt Clara Gantt Ralph Gantt Ella Robelia Gantt Pearl Gantt Walter Gantt Lelia/Lula Gantt b. 1874 d. 1916 m; Jacob J. Bender---this Lula Gantt Bender is buried in Grantsville Cemetery, Garrett Co. MD. I don't know if any of those daughters was known as "Nanny". Conrad Gantt had a Blacksmith Shop in Frostburg at the corner of Water & Mechanic St. My gg-grandfather suffered a heart attack while visiting the Gantt shop. Conrads daughter would have been my gg-grandfather, George Parkers, niece. Hope this helps you some.... Good Luck Take Care Pat ~~~

    3. William, I did a quick search and found your g-grandparents during the 1930 Census. They were living at that time in the Morgan district of Monongalia Co., WV. The address of Willowdale Road is noted on the side for this page of the Census. The listing is as follows: Mattox, William R., Head, O, 2500, M, W, 62, Married, 24, MD, MD, MD, Cabinet Maker, own shop. --------, Nannie, Wife-H, F, W, 60, M, 22, MD, WV, MD If I am reading the census right - they would have been married in approximately 1892. I am also estimating William's date of birth at about 1868 and Nannie's at about 1870. In 1920 Census, I found the following listing in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania: Mattox, William R., Head, M, W, 52, M, MD, MD, MD, carpenter, builder --------, Nannie R., wife, F, W, 50, M, MD, MD, MD --------, Willard R., daughter, F, W, 18, MD, MD, MD --------, Conrad R., son, M, W, 16, MD, MD, MD, painter. I hope that this helps. Wendy Sines Mammoliti

    3. Bill, I have been reading your postings which have contained a great deal of detail but I wondered IF you could give us approximate dates for when you think Nannie (probably a nickname - maybe Nancy) and William Robert Mattox were born; if it wouldn't help us help you. Both dates and locations are important when trying to trace family lines. I found one of your family names in Selbysport today as I was looking at the MD census, trying to help you, but without approximate dates of birth it is hard to say whether or not we are finding any of your "lost" family. I didn't report my find because you had been talking about Frostburg and I found one of the family names in Selbysport. I am sure I can retrace my steps and find it again. I will help you if I can, but I need a little more information to work with. Based on what I have read and seen, I suspect that it is a very nice place to be stuck J I am looking for information on Nannie Ruth GANTZ. She was my paternal Great Grandmother and was married to William Robert MATTOX. I have been told by family members that she had a connection to Grantsville. Census data indicates that in 1910 the family was living in Frostburg, MD. But family members have told me that she was from Grantsville and that her family had some sort of a retail store there. My mother thinks it was a general store of some type. She had a sister whose name was Pearl who ran this store with her husband. I suspect but do not know for sure, that the store was in the Gantz family and was passed down to Pearl and her husband. Based on the dates that I have and the information that has been passed my way, my best guess is that the store was in business at least in the years between 1900 and 1920, with the likely possibility that the store was being operated prior to and subsequent to those dates. William Robert MATTOX was a carpenter/cabinetmaker and according to family lore, apparently did some work in the store as well as some remodeling work on one of the churches in Frostburg. I suspect that this all took place right around the 1910 census. Family recollections are sketchy so I do not know the name of Pearl's husband. Nannie Ruth GANTZ and my Grandfather, William Robert MATTOX, seem to have mysteriously appeared in public records in 1900. I can find no traces of them prior to the 1900 census. I also ran into more Crowe cousins that live on the Avilton/Lonaconing Road and who's property is near the lake. It was mentioned to me that the lake wasn't always there but I didn't get a time frame as to when it was formed. Does anyone know when and what was there before it was flooded? I kind of have a guess that it was stripped by a Timber Company before it was made into that lake. Does anyone know of an Indian camp that was back there? They were Shawnee and Algonquin and later moved on to Pennsylvania taking an old Indian trail that runs back there as told to me by a cousin whose 93 year old aunt grew up back in those woods. I don't know of the name of the trail. They were still back there in possibly the 1920's or 30's. They may have been run off by a Mining/Timber company which bought land in Midlothian from Morris Winebrenner before his death about 1850. On checking a map I see the lake lines up fairly well to the backside of Midlothian and that there is still some strip mining noted on the present day map. Thanks for any information or advice on how I many further research this.
