    2. Erin White
    3. There is an LDS (Mormon) Church on John Drive in Oakland, of which I am a member. However, there is no Family History Center there. The closest family history centers to Garrett County are in at the LDS chapel in Allegany County on Long Drive in LaVale. There is also one in Morgantown. I will gladly provide the names and phone numbers of the family history consultants. Please contact me off-list at [email protected] I lived in Utah for ten years and researched both at the Family History Library at Brigham Young University and the collection in Salt Lake. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? There are thousands of books that are not available by ordering microfilm and that would be the advantage of going to Salt Lake. They are not available in the family history centers and have not been microfilmed.

    3. Hi Lois: I've never been to Salt Lake City, but I think you'll find better things to spend your time on than Ancestry.com's web site. I have used their facilites over the years, and if you have a Morman church near you, I would go there first and get a better idea of what you want to do when you get to Salt Lake City. In fact, I think you can do anything there you can do in Salt Lake, and save yourself the trip. 3. Hi Connie: I belonged to and supported rootsweb several years before Ancestry.com bought them out. In the early years they were strictly a volunteer organization who put in a lot of long cold hours and their own money to allow folks like us with an interest in genealogy to communicate with each other. I had a bad feeling in my gut when they were forced to "partner" with Ancestry.com because they could no longer afford to buy new servers, etc. to keep up with the demand. I still have that feeling. I use Ancestry.com almost entirely for U. S. census data. I have found WW I & II Draft Registration card images to be useful If trying to place a male at a certain place and time, because even if they weren't called into service they still had to register for the draft. Beyond those two categories, I've found little of use on Ancestry.com over the several years I've been a member. Family trees placed on their website are pretty useless. 3. Sam, In regard to your question about "why would I want to contact this person if I didn't want him to know who I was is beyond me.". I have an answer for you. You may want to have the person know who you are, BUT do not want to be on their personal email list so that you start getting jokes etc. from them. It may be you only want to have contact with them regarding the submitted information. Also, much to my dismay, I found that "Spammers" take email addys from places like forums etc. and then you are on the Spammers list, and boy will you be sorry. You can always contact the person, add your name and email addy to the message if you want them to have it, and not worry about others getting the email address and name. This, I have found, works very well. Though this may not alter your opinion of Ancestry. com, I hope it helps you in understanding the contact practice. 1. [MDGARRET] Previous query about a dogger on a carriage
    2. If you look up in the dictionary you will find a definition of a "dog" A dog is a device which is used to block or hold something. A dogger is the man that attaches and removes or loosens a dog. In this instance a dogger on a carriage is on a sawmill that uses a circular saw to cut slaps or boards from a log. The log is dogged to carriage which runs back and forth to cut the boards from a log. Once the log is cut and the carriage returns the log must be loosened so it can be turned 90% to make the next cut. The dog is then replaced to hold the log for the next cut, thus the man or men depending on the size of the log is called a dogger turning the log on the carriage. On small logs the log may not be turned but just made tight to the carriage for the next cut. That is what a dogger on a carriage did.

    1. [MDGARRET] Ancestry.com
    2. Sam Bowser
    3. I think there was some discussion a while back regarding Ancestry.com which I no longer have in my mailbox. Someone had posted a message I think regarding information they'd found in a family tree submitted to Ancestry by a "Roberds" or something similar. I think I stumbled on the same submission last evening. What I found was information I know to be erroneous. There was a box to contact the submitter. I clicked on the box and a prewritten email came up that said in replying to the submitter, I could be assured that my identity would not be revealed. Now why would I want to contact this person if I didn't want him to know who I was is beyond me. Anyway....I added my name and email address to the message and sent it. I quickly got a message back that I'd performed an illegal act (presumably by adding my email address) which would be registered on their server. "Roberds" or whatever the name is; is a phony identity assigned to the submitter by Ancestry.com for some reason beyond my understanding. Apparently they don't want people exchanging information freely. My impression is that when you submit data to them, it becomes _their data; not yours. Has anyone else come to that conclusion? What aggravates me about this is that I know what this "Roberds" source was for this particular part of his submission; and what that source was, was an inquiry to the Bowser rootsweb list 6 years ago asking for information regarding a Bowser family. The inquiry contained erroneous information, which is now part of "Roberds" submission. And of course the person's email address who made the original inquiry 6 years ago is no longer valid. For my own part, I'm willing to share what I've found with anyone who cares to exchange information, but I have no intention of donating it to Ancestry.com for commercial purposes. Sam
