    1. Re: [MDGARRET] LDS Church
    2. Joe & Erin Hartman
    3. I've been reading these posts about the LDS curch and trips to Salt Lake City, and I have two cousins that are Mormons and live in that area. A bit of a warning here: I hope you all realize that they do not verify any of the info in their database. I've checked some of the data that they have on my ancestors, and they are dead wrong on portions of it. Keep in mind that they accept info from just about anyone, knowledgeable family source or not, so if "Great-Uncle Bill" was a horse thief and the older family members tried to cover it up, Uncle Bill might not be in the database. Or if a female family member gave birth to a child out of wedlock, the older submitters many times changed birth or marriage dates to make it seem legitimate before submitting to the LDS database. My cousins quite often send messages to me asking if I have any info on certain members of the family. Their religious zeal to get every possible person into their database often times takes precedent over accuracy. Joe Hartman ========================= Erin White wrote: >There is an LDS (Mormon) Church on John Drive in Oakland, of which I am a member. However, there is no Family History Center there. The closest family history centers to Garrett County are in at the LDS chapel in Allegany County on Long Drive in LaVale. There is also one in Morgantown. I will gladly provide the names and phone numbers of the family history consultants. Please contact me off-list at [email protected] I lived in Utah for ten years and researched both at the Family History Library at Brigham Young University and the collection in Salt Lake. > __________________________________________________ >Do You Yahoo!? >Tired of spam? 2. Wendy Mammoliti
    3. Margie, There are no Deitz. There is a listing for Dietz as follows: On the vessel "Irene", who was in service for the church. She brought a large number of colonists from Europe for settling the estates of the Church of Pennsylvania. The "Irene" arrived at New York on May 12, 1749 with the "John Nitschmann Colony". The John Nitschmann Colony was said to be the largest brought over on a Moravian transport. Listed in the roster of colonists is Rosina Dietz, a single woman. On a later voyage of the "Irene", which docked in New York on Nov. 20, 1752, Maria C. Dietz was listed as a single woman. This is all that I have. Wendy

    2. A group of Mormon missionaries hit Garret Co not long after the church was formed. An excellent account in The Bittinger Book tells of families - 4 or 5 - who converted and headed west to spread the faith. One was a Speicher-Fiek couple. I was in contact for a time and received 104 pp. of hard copy and shared some of my info. A real treat! Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Hi Lois: The books I have here only cover German immigration up to 1800 or very shortly after, so this is probably of no use to you, but I recall you had a Michael Hetrick way back somewhere. Yes, I have the Higginson book on Michael. Dates back to 1651 (the book says the family name dates back to 1200 or so) -- it appears he moved his family from Saxony to Langenselbold just East of Frankfurt. While I have great-grandfathers back to that 1651 era, I don't have all of their wives and none of their siblings, so very difficult to determine how my g-grandfather Conrad is related to Michael. My grandfather Melchoir (Michael) was most likely named after one of the Michael Hetrick's but I don't have Conrad's father or uncles names, nor any of his great-grandfather's brothers. Am grateful for what I do have though. I ran across these three HEITERICH, Abraham, Johann, and Johann Michael, all of Irzweiler, Germany who emigrated to America in 1739. But then I see the same three listed again a few pages later as "HENDRICK". Doesn't look like yours, but I thought I'd pass it on just in case. Thanks Sam . . . I'm going to keep this and check further. I "googled" Irzweiler and it asked if I was looking for Wurzweiler. I didn't recognize the surrounding cities from the lineage I received from Germany--I need a more detailed map. Carl (the "original" Michael's second son arrived in Philadelphia on August 27, 1733. The Higginson book I have is "The Hetrick Family 1651-1955 ... Historical and Biographical Sketch of the Hedderich, Heddrich, Hedrick, Heidenrich, Heidrich, Hetrich, Hetrick Family" The spelling Heiterich was not included -- my line appeared to be Hederich -- but both sound alike -- no "Hendricks" though. I have also seen what appeared to be Hedrick or Hedrich on the censuses for my line, but if you look closely, "d" looks like a fancy "t". I take them all into consideration ;) Lois

My Hetrick cousin in Salt Lake City couldn't find anything on her Hetricks until another cousin put her in touch with me. I think the two of us will visit the LDS Library and maybe she can follow through for me in search of Nancy. Do you have any suggestions on whom I might contact to do the research in Germany (Hesse-D and Bavaria) for Nancy? Lois
