    2. Lavinia, Thanks so much for the information. I'm going to try to focus and just pursue that record out of the church in Germany. If I can find that, it will give me Nancy Hetrick's parents and I can go from there. So much info there I'm sure. Not my original plan to go to the library and do research, but how can I not at least do this one thing. Lois Hetrick Stewart

    3. One thing I found that doesn't work well at the Family History Centers is researching property transfers. That's one thing that works best at the County Court house if you possibly can. That's because one deed book will refer you to another then another then another; and each deed book will be on a different microfilm. From today back to 1800??? you may have to go through a dozen or more than a dozen deed books (or microfilms). However the indexes are usually available on film, and if you can find the person or deed you are looking for in an index, you can order that one film for that one record. Generally, though, if possible, I think the courthouse is a better bet for land records. Another thing that happens is that a piece of property may have been bequeathed in a Will, in which case then you have to go look up the will, (usually just around the corner or across the hall); which will refer to a land record, then go back to land records office to continue. 3. Hi Lois: I think if you go to the LDS web site you'll find their catalog of microfilmed records on line, or it used to be. You may be able to find the film in their catalog, go to a local Family History Center (if you have one near you), place an order for the film for maybe $4, and view it there at the Family History Center. Easier yet, just go there and ask a volunteer to check the catalog for you. Most of their film readers have printers attached, so you can get a hardcopy. When it comes to films of the nature you're talking about, be prepared to (possibly) spend several hours looking for what you are interested in. Typically, one film can hold records from several different churches, all of it in the old German script, so sometimes it can take a while. 3. Hi all, While this discussion has been going on, I've been in Salt Lake -- for 10 days actually -- and now I'm home at last. A fellow researcher and I go once a year. The library is so rich with microfilm of primary documents that we'll never run out of projects. December is a great time to go -- Temple Square is decorated with a zillion lights, and the library is relatively empty. Apparently most groups go in May or October so those are times to avoid. Lois's strategy of looking for something very specific is excellent. What's really wonderful is when you find that very specific thing is that you can interpret it, then immediately move on to your next task with the likelihood that another court case, deed, tax or church record will be right there to look at. This trip I spent a few days looking through old church records in Warwickshire and Lincolnshire, England. I immersed myself in the films of original parish records and the original Bishop's transcripts. I found signatures of ancestors written in the early 1700's, and X's marked by those who couldn't write. I was also writing up a recent trip I took to those places with some distant English cousins, and I found maps to flesh out my write up, plus local histories written at that time full of information about home life. All this right there in the library. I was actually kind of shocked to find a book printed in 1729 with beautiful etchings in it just sitting there on the shelf. And they let you xerox from any book. There are many, many county and city histories. There are privately bound books of research done by individuals or small genealogy societies that you won't find elsewhere. It's a wonderful place to spend a week. Even though I've gone to the FHL now quite a few times, I still have some problems using their computerized card catalogue. When you're researching court documents, it's pretty easy to use. But there are so very many histories, and obscure documents that I have difficulty finding without already knowing the author or title, that I know I'm missing a lot of good material. For instance, I'm still trying to find the original patents for Garrett county -- I'm sure they have them, but I just can't find how they're indexed. And they have Casper Stoever's diary on film-- easy to find -- but only after many steps did I find the church records kept by Rev. John L. Grant of Philadelphia in the mid 1800's which had my gggrandparents marriage record. To use the library effectively you really have to dig in and do research -- not data mining. Still, the library is a gold mine. I spent one lovely morning just reading through Allegany county liber A chronologically. So many ancestors there then. The IGI and the ancestral files are filled with errors, but are often useful as clues. I look forward to being able to urge corrections to those. Oh yes, and xeroxes are only a nickel a page. I wish a trip to Salt Lake on all of you! Merry Christmas to all! 3. What you say applies to any family trees you find on the internet, whether it's LDS, rootsweb, or whatever. There are a lot of people out there who "datamine"; don't do any actual research, just gather whatever they can find from others on the internet and call the result their own creation. 3. Hi Betty: Thanks for reminding me about those families. I had read about them in the Bittinger book but couldn't recall what families were involved. I remember thinking it was interesting that the folks in Garrett County were so intolerant when it came to the Mormons. Some family members were "disowned" when they joined the LDS & went west. Makes you think about the days of the Reformation when the Catholic church split. 2. When I go to SLC I just have one page to find and that would be the German record of Zeilbach of their citizens who applied to immigrate after 1846--page 2 ended with my 2nd great-grandparents. I will take what I have with me. I'm hoping to find when the rest of my great-grandfather Conrad Hetrick and his wife Anna Maria "Nancy" Upphold applied to emigrate. It would have had to have happened after 1854 but before 1861 as their first born (Charles Conrad) was born in 1860 in MD. The record gives the parents' names of those emigrating. Would be a wonderful find . . . then maybe from there I can find the rest of Nancy's family from Bavaria. I presently only have the name of her sister Margarethe Eisner and her daughter Johanna (looks like a combination of Johann and Anna) Hmmmm. 3. I couldn't find fault with the Old Scottish Parish records. It's been a while since I used them to find Willisons. If I recall correctly, what you got to see was pictures of the parish records. Having spent a lot of time recently transcribing some old church records, I can see where a lot of mistakes could be made. Not all pastors could write well so I've been trying to figure out what is written by using a lot of research material. Usually that doesn't help either. Old books can become damaged in time if not cared for properly. Connie

There's an Ancestral file on-line at the LDS site on my paternal great-grandparents that was submitted by a non-Mormon. And this person does not descend from those great-grandparents either. She is their "half-great-grandniece" and so distantly related that she has misspelled my paternal great-grandfather's surname in the files she submitted to the LDS. I might have overlooked the misspelling, it's common among strangers, but there were so many other errors that I finally wrote this person. She admitted that the files were pieced together from stuff other family members had given her and that she had not confirmed any of my great-grandparents' family info since she didn't directly descend from them. I contacted the LDS several years ago to see about getting these files corrected but haven't had any luck so far. I was just told my info would be "preserved". It has never been made available on-line so who knows how they are "preserving" it.. It will be interesting to see how this new on-line service will work and what they will do with the info submitted.. Hmmm?. . Bye for now, Kathleen

    3. Yes, I can't wait. Once it is launched and they have the site up and the bugs worked out I plan to add my Stark file (over 5,000 individuals) and the collateral families so that everyone can easily find my information. I've been researching this line for over 40 years and figure I'd better get it out there and preserved. 1. [MDGARRET] Ancestry Databases
    2. This is a very interesting discussion and I think that the important point to keep in mind is that the submitted genealogies are not the responsibility of Ancestry.com and should be taken in the spirit they are given. Fellow researchers, as imperfect as they may be, have done what they believe is their due diligence and want to share their work, as flawed as it is and post it online. For myself, I look back at what I thought was "good" research and documentation when I first began and laugh at how inept it was. As always, it is incumbent upon each researcher to verify all "facts" that are uncovered to the best of their ability. These online genealogies are only a small part of what is available on the Ancestry.com website but unfortunately we fixate on them because they are not without fault. Digitized books, census info, church and military records, historic newspapers...the list goes on and on. But for some reason, we all continue to beat the dead horse of submitted ! genealogies and the "wrong" information contained within. I prefer to focus on the positive. And right now I hear a hot turkey sandwich calling my name. A great evening to all. Catch you on the flip side. : ) Eileen

    3. That problem is about to be solved. The Family History Library is about to release a new online service that will permit corrections of the data on www.familysearch.org That will be a great step forward in cooperative online genealogy since we can submit our records and allow various genealogists to add their input if they have different facts. Each person can include the source for their information (another new feature) so that we can compare and decide on which details to accept. This new online service will be released "soon" ... Tom Still working on: Stark, Broadwater, Custer, and a dozen more Garrett County families. 2. I too have found numerous wrong entries in their data and there is no way to correct it. I have tried to locate the submitters but am told the privacy requirements prohibit disclosure. Their facilities are good for accessing anything from Ancestry and census reports, etc.

    3. My personal experience has been similar in that research in many cases was done without verification in any form. I have been presented with "facts" from research located through the LDS resources (website, etc...) that were clearly wrong based on my own research and that of others such as yourselves who have documents to back up the work. I know that a person can access many volumes of researchable documents through the LDS libraries and that research is only as good as the researcher. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to everyone, I enjoy the "conversations" on this site and thank everyone who has aided me in my search for the Johnstons, Hilemans and Upholds and associated lines in the past few years.
