    3. On October 27, 1771, future Maryland Governor Thomas Simm Lee, of Petersville, married Mary Digges. On October 27, 1818, the steeple of the fourth Reformed Church in Middletown was raised. The church was completed in June 1819 and dedicated June 27 that year. On October 27, 1836, Mexican General Santa Anna, the victor at The Alamo, stopped at Robert's Tavern in Frederick. On October 27, 1887, John Ritchie, chief judge of The Sixth Judicial Circuit, died at his West Church Street home. On October 27, 1986, Edgar and Dorothy Barnes were killed when their light plane crashed near Mt. Pleasant while trying to land at Frederick Municipal Airport in a thick blanket of fog. Their flight originated at Niagara Falls, NY. On October 27, 1994, Julia Etchison Hanna, longtime English teacher at Frederick High School, a Frederick News-Post columnist, and an author, died at Sunrise Retirement Home at the age of 97.
