On December 2, 1844, John Johnston Markell, a portrait and landscape artist and great grandson of the man who built the first house in Frederick - John Thomas Schley, died in Frederick. On December 2, 1959, Robert S. Rothenhoefer was appointed State's Attorney for Frederick County by Chief Judge Patrick M. Schnauffer to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Edwin F. Nikirk.
