On May 5, 1788, the sale of lots began in New Market, which was laid out by Nicholas Hall. On May 5, 1835, George Carlton Rhoderick, Sr., who began work at The Catoctin Whig (later known as The Valley Register) at the age of 9 and remained for 51 years, was born in Middletown. He died February 13, 1906. On May 5, 1864, Jason Damuth, of Mechanicstown, was killed at The Battle of The Wilderness. The Thurmont Chapter of The Grand Army of The Republic was named in his honor. On May 5, 1940, Miss Bertha Trail, one of the founders of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church on Franklin Street in Frederick, died. On May 5, 1973, the Kiwanis Club of Walkersville received its charter. F. Ridgely Cramer was installed as the first president. On May 5, 1993, The Rev. James N. Loughran, a 53-year-old Jesuit philosophy teacher at John Carroll University in Cleveland, was named interim president of Mt. Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg.
