    3. On May 12, 1893, The Women's College of Frederick, now Hood College, was founded by the Potomac Synod of The Reformed Church. Joseph Henry Apple, Jr., of Pittsburgh, PA, was selected as the first president. On May 12, 1952, Frederick City Hospital, which opened in 1902, changed its name to Frederick Memorial Hospital.
