On February 22, 1800, a lavish memorial funeral for George Washington, who had died December 14, 1799, was held in Frederick. Former Maryland Governor Thomas Johnson made his last formal public appearance by delivering the eulogy for his old friend. On February 22, 1810, Elizabeth Ann Seton, who would become the first native-born American saint of the Roman Catholic Church, opened the first parochial school in the country at The White House in Emmitsburg. On February 22, 1853, Uriah A. Lough, whose name remains today on the tombstone and monument firm he founded in 1883, was born in Oxford Township, Adams County, PA. He died May 18, 1928. On February 22, 1878, Jacob Engelbrecht died. He recorded newsworthy events with an emphasis on Frederick in his diary from 1819 to the time of his death. On February 22, 1932, the final demonstration of United Fire Company's 'Lily Of The Swamp,' its 1878 engine. It was then given to The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, which later loaned it to the Maryland Fire Museum in Timonium.
