On February 4, 1942, Ira Harrison Burhman, who was born November 10, 1889, in Foxville, was lost at sea when German submarine U-103 torpedoed his ship, the India Arrow, 35 miles off the New Jersey coast. He was the first Frederick County person to lose his life in hostile action during World War II. On February 4, 1968, R. Ames Hendrickson, prominent civic leader and retired owner of Hendrickson's on North Market Street in Frederick, died at his home at 119 West Second Street. On February 4, 2005, Dr. Patricia Stanley, the first woman president of Frederick Community College, announced her retirement, effective when a replacement is selected. She became president in 1998 after serving as executive vice-president of Cypress College in California.
