On August 30, 1911, Clarence C. Carty, founder of the furniture store which bore his name, died. He was born January 8, 1847. On August 30, 1950, an F-84 fighter jet crashed into a field three miles east of Emmitsburg killing 2nd Lt. Michael E. Alkire, 22, of Washington, D.C.
