On September 26, 1902, an agreement was signed between James Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, and Father John O'Rourke, president of the Novitiate Academy on East Second Street in Frederick, "to transfer the administration of the church and parish of St. John's Frederick" from the Society of Jesus to the Archdiocese. On September 26, 1917, prominent local attorney Leo Weinberg, at the close of services for Yom Kippur, called for contributions for the construction of a synagogue in Frederick. David Lowenstein was the first to contribute with a pledge of $3,000. On September 26, 1931, the dedication of the bust of Roger Brooke Taney in Courthouse Square was broadcast nationally over radio. Charles Evans Hughes, Chief Justice of The United States, was the main speaker.
