    1. [MDFREDER] FW: Civil War Battle at South Mountain
    2. Its was Sunday, 14 Sep 1862. The peaceful scene at Fox Gap near Middletown today belies the battle then which shaped events for the Civil War's bloodiest single day at Antietam three days later. A lot has been written about this event, but a new twist with genealogical rewards may be found in looking at the Wise family home at Fox Gap and an archaeological survey conducted there in 2002 by Joe Baker of Pennsylvania's Indiana University. At http://commonground.cr.nps.gov/template_CG.cfm?articleIDN=614 you will find Joe Baker's thoughtful reflections as he prepared for digging at the Wise farmstead site early one morning in Aug 2002. His informative report on the project may be found at http://iuparchaeology.iup.edu/foxgap/ Go to "Project Results," then "II Place for the Past." The entire report is there with recommendations for preservation of the site. There are details of the Indian presence and "Euroamerican Settlement of the Mountain," and the "Settlement History of Fox Gap" by Elwood W. Christ is a very well researched account of the families that lived on the mountain which will be of special interest to genealogists. I visited these internet sites after a recent walk around the Fox Gap area. They were impressive and added to my appreciation of the significance of the scene and what took place there in 1862.

    3. I was very moved and fascinated by Joe Baker's introduction into his archealogical investitgation but was unable to go further as it seems the site is not available. It makes me happy to find others that feel as I do about the folks that led the way. I will be looking forward to more on his wonderful work. I would also be interested in hearing from any Frantz researchers from this area. I just recently joined the list after hearing that there were Frantzes that settled there. I have enjoyed also the moments of history that tells me more about this interesting place. Regards, Nancy Nancy J.
